Lighthearted- I’ve worked my arse off on dinner, what will my family say?

Decided I’m sick of Friday night takeout so went to the shops and bought ingredients for dinner. I’ve worked my arse off all afternoon cooking and preparing, I’ve got the nice dishes out, even made dessert. It bloody cost more than takeout and has taken hours. I’m really pleased with how well it’s come out. But I know I’m going to hear all the whinging- don’t want this/don’t like it/want chips etc.

What’s on the menu?

Sugardown · 04/07/2025 15:16

Your family sound… rude

how old are they?

mondaytosunday · 04/07/2025 15:18

Well tell them that’s all you’ve got. Luckily my kids they like everything!

Agix · 04/07/2025 15:19

Why choose to slave over a dinner you know they won't like? Seems like a waste of time (and apparently money) and making a martyr of yourself honestly.

Let them have takeout. Keep the fancy dinner for yourself. Will it keep well as leftovers?

At least you enjoyed preparing it! Share pics later?

It definitely often costs more to make a nice dinner than to get a takeaway (depending on what the takeaway is), but personally I enjoy cooking a nice meal for my family. Thankfully they are always grateful even if it might not have been what they themselves would have chosen to eat. If I knew I was going to get whinging I wouldn't bother.

TheLittleMermoo · 04/07/2025 15:22

What are you having! We must know!

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 04/07/2025 15:22

Voted YANBU. But it’s your enjoyment that matters the most. Be positive and it might rub off. ❤️

Here for the big meal reveal..

My moneys on lasagne..

InterestedDad37 · 04/07/2025 15:25

Someone will have developed a new allergy, and someone else will say they've "never liked" whichever ingredient. And everyone will be dieting 🤔😀

TokyoSushi · 04/07/2025 15:25

Yes! What is it?!

My moneys on lasagne..

Jacket potato with grated cheese & baked beans
and
Tub of ice cream

chaiselozenges · 04/07/2025 15:27

It’s beans on toast obvs. Lightly sprinkled with cheese.

Fifthtimelucky · 04/07/2025 15:29

I discovered years ago that, with one exception, my husband’s appreciation of my cooking was in inverse proportion to the effort I put into it. The exception is a roast, but even then he would only want the meat, the roast potatoes and the Yorkshire pudding.

Fortunately, my children do not feel the same way!

BangersAndGnash · 04/07/2025 15:31

“Is there any ketchup?”

TheLittleMermoo · 04/07/2025 15:31

I think shes made lasagne and a cheesecake

Sugardown · 04/07/2025 15:32

Maybe a better day aside from Friday take away night would have been better for going to an effort

although if you genuinely think your family will whinge at you and be rude….. then going to an effort on any day was probably going to end up with you in a mood banging away in the kitchen and emptying full plates in to the bin!!

B1anche · 04/07/2025 15:35

I can't believe I'm following this thread purely to find out what the meal is. What has my life become?

Mildmanneredmum · 04/07/2025 15:56

Me too

Iwillclasptheeagain · 04/07/2025 15:57

They are being unreasonable. Toasted sandwiches are the BEST.

BusWankers · 04/07/2025 16:00

"why aren't we having takeaway?"

Brightmoonlight · 04/07/2025 16:01

Good for you OP. I think you may need to explain why you have done this, otherwise they might not get it.
Luckily my family like and appreciate home cooking. I had to explain to someone all about the "cooking a meal is about love".

SummerFrog25 · 04/07/2025 16:04

It's still hot here! Nothing is getting cooked.i had iced coffee to avoid steaming the milk.

dinner will be rocket, cucumber, tomatoes, yellow pepper, radish, gherkin, spring onion, cheese, if that. It's just too hot to want to eat right now.

Yep, NO. Cooking might be about love for YOU, that doesn't make it a fact.
