Fu**ing Vapes

I’m so sick of fucking vape companies making this shit so attractive to teenagers, how is it allowed? I know teenagers need to take responsibility for themselves but it’s just there in their face in every shop and everyone is doing it.

My 16 year old promised me he would never do and I stupidly believed him but Wednesday night I found a vape in his room. I lost my shit at him for lying and being an idiot. The vape is now in the bin and he is grounded for a week but has been warned it will be longer next time I catch him.

I asked if it was cigarettes then would he do it because “everyone else is” and he said no because cigarettes are disgusting which just proves my point that vapes are too attractive to kids.

How the hell do we stop kids doing it?

Not even sure what my aibu is!

Did you try smoking as a kid?
Or drink before you were 18?

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 04/07/2025 13:17

It's irrelevant because I'd be the same as you, I just think it's semi normal for kids to experiment and break boundaries a bit.

I think I'd do the same as you so it's not criticism!!

MNpenisadvisor · 04/07/2025 13:17

Don't worry he'll be on the kwtamine soon that's the teenager thing ATM. I'd rather mine vaped

Gallivanterer · 04/07/2025 13:18

Christ you need to relax

Locutus2000 · 04/07/2025 13:20

DS 15 is hooked on 'Snus' which has replaced vaping in his friend group.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 04/07/2025 13:20

Cigarettes weren’t marketed to kids in the 90s and I remember heaps of my year skulking off behind the gym dept and coming back smelling of fags. I think it’s the forbidden element more than anything.
He’s also hardly likely to say “Aw yeah Mum, I’d love to try a real cigarette. Can’t wait till someone offers me one”, is he?

Relax over my 16 year old doing something that is known to be highly addictive and will most definitely damage his lungs?

Yep

MyUmberSeal · 04/07/2025 13:22

I was doing far worse then that at 16. He’s 16!! I think you are over reacting massively, however, I do accept that vaping has become popular.

But, grounding a 16 year old, can’t get my head round that . Enjoy the little time you have left to punish your almost adult offspring, before they fly free. Perhaps he will have an actual rolly with real tobacco one day. Crazy stuff.

Yes he is grounded because he is only 16 and still a child!

I thought this the other day- the way that they are advertised is terrible- trying to appeal to a younger buyer.
Really irresponsible. At least cigarettes had strict rules about their packaging and advertising.

Topseyt123 · 04/07/2025 13:25

My DD3 got herself addicted to vaping whilst in sixth form. I only found out when she left one in the bathroom (she's quite scatter brained that way).

I didn't lose my shit, but told her she was silly, which she agreed with. When she went to uni soon afterwards she ditched them herself because she just didn't have the money to spend on them. As far as I know she's been clean of them since and I've seen no sign of them, but I wasn't born yesterday.

I think they should only ever have been available as a smoking cessation aid, to at least get people away from cigarettes. That is how my 90 year old mother has been using them and it has been successful.

Gallivanterer · 04/07/2025 13:26

Do you work?

Definitely should only have ever been an aid to stopping smoking, now we have thousands of teenagers doing it with no idea of how addictive they are.

It’s not a one or the other thing.

What is “snus?” I’m old so this has passed me by!

I was in the post office yesterday and they have a huge display of them all pink and blue colours with loads of different flavours, definitely being marketed towards younger people and it’s wrong.

It’s a type of tobacco, apparently they put it under their lip! Why though I have no idea!

Couldn’t agree with your more op. They’re blatantly targeting children/younger people.

Surprised at how many people are admonishing you for parenting. I would do the same in your situation and reiterate to son the effects.

K0OLA1D · 04/07/2025 13:33

I smoked and drank in the 00s. Fag's and booze weren't aimed at kids.

Kids experiment. Annoying as it is

Agix · 04/07/2025 13:34

They may have been asking because you sound super bored to be making such a huge stink about vapes.

Kids don't take up smoking / vaping / drugs because it's attractive. They take it up because it's taboo, forbidden, for adults, and so "cool". Smoking used to be the thing to do, and it's always been disgusting. Now it's considered disgusting by everyone to the point it's uncool, and vapes have replaced it as the cool thing grown ups can do.

You're making it worse making such an issue out of it. It's even cooler now.

I have to agree. He'll hide it better next time.

Thelas · 04/07/2025 13:35

YANBU. I agree that they should never have been widely marketed in the first place, nor been allowed to introduce sweet flavours that are obviously going to appeal to teenagers. Definitely should have just been a tool used in the same way that eg nicotine patches are.

My DC are still primary-aged, but it is one (of many!!) thing I am worried about when they hit the teens.

My eldest is ND, and although she is impulsive, worries quite a lot about doing the right thing... However my youngest is very easily-led!

I can't remember the latest with the smoking bill... I know it got paused when Labour came in, but I'm hopeful that there will be more restrictions on them.

Foreverm0re · 04/07/2025 13:37

There are some shite parents on here who clearly think this is ok. And no, not everyone smoked or drank under age either.
