Fu**ing Vapes

I’m so sick of fucking vape companies making this shit so attractive to teenagers, how is it allowed? I know teenagers need to take responsibility for themselves but it’s just there in their face in every shop and everyone is doing it.

My 16 year old promised me he would never do and I stupidly believed him but Wednesday night I found a vape in his room. I lost my shit at him for lying and being an idiot. The vape is now in the bin and he is grounded for a week but has been warned it will be longer next time I catch him.

I asked if it was cigarettes then would he do it because “everyone else is” and he said no because cigarettes are disgusting which just proves my point that vapes are too attractive to kids.

How the hell do we stop kids doing it?

Not even sure what my aibu is!

PS
So they can get their sweet hit from actual sweets, or sugar free gum. Whatever floats their boat, but not nicotine laden vapes.

That won't solve the nicotine/smoking craving, though - or they'd have been able to stop smoking years ago.

But people don't generally chuck used laptops, phones, cars, furniture, televisions and food/toiletries/cleaning goods/feminine hygiene products down on the pavement in the same volume they do vape litter.

I'm part of a litter picking group and it's a huge part of what we pick up.

Food, they do - there's far more food packaging dropped than anything else, except for possibly plastic bags/wrapping from any random article. The others, it depends upon whether you litterpick by bus stops or go into woodland/heathland/ponds, where it'll be cars, furniture, builders' rubble, oil drums, bikes, beer cans, furniture and a considerable number of injecting kits round the back of the nearest five holly trees or clump of rhododendrons, from my experience.

So what! They are adults. Some things are hard but worth the effort.

Your argument is a red herring. The OP is concerned about safeguarding children, which I agree is far more important.

Deflecting the OP’s concern by creating a false choice between the needs of addicts and the needs of children is never going to work because children must come first, so your emotional appeal to the success rates of adults hoping to quit falls flat.

DS 15 is hooked on 'Snus' which has replaced vaping in his friend group.

3 boys at my kids' school had to be blye-lighted to hospital after taking snus before a lesson. Two passed out, one violently vomiting.

FlowerPower2525 · 04/07/2025 19:00

I similar with my ds. Unfortunately the more you try to stop it the more he's most likely to just get more clever at hiding it.
It's so easy for them to buy them ( shouldn't be) but it is. Most corner shops will sell to under age, likewise things like red bull .
I ended up saying, i know you vape but I don't want it in my house or to see it. He's now 20 and still does it. You can't stop them Unfortunately.

What’s stupid about it? The NHS recommends them because they are safer than smoking. Obviously not applicable to a teen who has never smoked before but there’s nothing stupid about saying they are better than fags.

Sorry, I should have been clearer - I meant in the context of teenagers, not existing adult smokers.

It's not in the slightest bit emotional. And frankly, if vapes weren't available, the teenagers would be doing exactly what previous generations of teenagers did and start smoking cigarettes despite the parenting abilities of their families. It's how the adults now using vapes (with a huge amount of success and the approval of actual medical professionals due to the absence of carcinogenic chemicals and particulate matter in smoke) started, after all.

Vaping saves the NHS a lot of money (whilst bringing in a fair whack to the Treasury) compared to smoking. It helps people to give up smoking. Other people's children are not adults' problem.

I couldn't believe how many kids at my DD's school were vaping. I used to think it was just a smoking cessation tool, but it's obviously marketed to appeal to teens who have never smoked cigarettes, getting them hooked on nicotine. Yes, better than cigarettes, but not good, and agree that waste from disposable vapes is also a significant problem.

I'd have strong words with DD if I found out she was doing it (pretty sure she isn't). Oh, and in reply to an earlier question directed at the OP - implying she had nothing better to do than worry about vaping - I have a busy full time job 😂

Don't worry he'll be on the kwtamine soon that's the teenager thing ATM. I'd rather mine vaped

What the actual hell???!!!!

Do they realise what that stuff does to your body.

Weeing every 5 mins. And constant pain.

Wetting themselves and needing to wear nappies.

KateMiskin · 04/07/2025 19:10

I think you did the right thing, OP, even if I am in the minority. And yes, I hate the way they are marketed to kids.

Finteq · 04/07/2025 19:14

We have one teenage who can't walk and is under neurorehab because of nitrous. Under 20 and needs a wheelchair.

Despite many symptoms it was only when she couldn't walk anymore that she fessed up about the balloons.

Her friends know about what happened but some still use it.

We have 1 under 25 under Urology cos of ketamine abuse. He needs nappies. Short of a bladder transplant I don't think there's much that will help him. He's still using small amounts because he can't stop.

We had one teen admitted to hospital because of vape abuse.

Unfortunately kids are gonna do what they gonna do.

Any time there's a story like this in the news I show my kid. So if she still wants to do the drugs when she's moved out I can't stop her.

drspouse · 04/07/2025 19:15

Teenagers didn't get addicted to e cigarettes or nicotine gum. YANBU.

CakeFace1234 · 04/07/2025 19:35

I'd worry too about vaping too and wonder what kind of long term effects it will have on health.

I'm not aware of any of DS' friends vaping, however, snus seems to be popular as it can go undetected. Again, the packaging is quite funky, so aimed at kids. They look like tiny packets of those silicone gel things that you get with shoes. I think it is inserted between the lips and gums. Reminds me of the chewing tobacco in old Westerns that was spat out in spitoons. Those that use snus have to keep spitting out the saliva. I have warned DS about this. I said that holding nicotine containing things in the mouth for any length of time must raise the risk of mouth cancers. Plus it must be addictive as it contains nicotine. I really hope I have warned him sufficiently to never risk harming his health.

Oh dear. More logical fallacies. Fatalism is not an argument against doing what is best for children.

Food packaging yes - food generally not so much. The number one thing we pick up is food and drink packaging . The second biggest amount of litter we pick is vape litter - vapes, parts of them and the packaging they come in.

I'm talking about street littering. The fact that some rotten gits will fly tip doesn't detract from the fact that in our streets at the moment vape litter is a big problem.

Food and drink packaging, we should not see being dumped. People finish a can of Coke whilst driving. Why do they have to chuck it out their vehicle window? Leave it in the car until you get to your destination.

When litter picking on A and B roads, we see alcohol drink cans and bottles. A drink drive issue is going on.

Plus the large nitrous oxide canisters, were used to inflate balloons. Then inhale contents of balloons.

Vapes take up very little weight and space compared to these
