Lily Allen ‘can’t remember’ how many abortions she’s had

Article in the Fail today about this.
I am pro choice but it did make me a bit uncomfortable. After a while a string of abortions - too many to remember - would surely leave its mark physically and emotionally not mention the cost on the NHS.
Everyone should have a choice but is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

OP posts:

Fewer than Boris Johnson?

Lily Allen herself doesn't seem to mind turning it into something to laugh and joke about on her podcast with Miquita Oliver. The pair of them actually laughed about it which I think is in extremely poor taste, but I'd expect nothing less from LA, who is a tedious attention whore and does whatever she can to shock.

I am fiercely pro-choice but I find this distasteful in the extreme. Abortion is not to be used repeatedly in place of contraception. At least not when you are a privileged brat like Lily Allen. Some disadvantaged and abused women may have no choice. She isn't one of them.

To say she can't remember how many is disgusting. She's either had far too many or she's just lying for the shock value. Neither is anything to be proud of.

A whore? Careful there, your misogyny is showing.

So pro-choice but with added judgement when it doesn't suit you? And wth are you reading the Mail? Ewwww to all of this

mbosnz · 03/07/2025 12:24

@TwigletsandRadishes, so, you're not a big Lilly Allen fan there, huh?

Bbq1 · 03/07/2025 12:25

Disgusting when people like Allen are using it as s form of contraceptive.
How does an adult woman "accidentally" get pregnant 5 times?

Why are people being so judgmental to the OP for posting this? Lily Allen openly discussed her abortions on a podcast. It's not as though someone leaked her medical records. People are just trying to censor the discussion because it contradicts the "no woman aborts a baby lightly" narrative.

I know, it’s bizarre. The podcast numbers were getting low in recent weeks, if Lily says something controversial, - like a few months ago when she announced she had rehoused their puppy after he chewed up their passports. She knows that The Daily Mail and other outlets and forums will pick up on it, cover it in the sidebar of shame and hey presto, the podcast numbers can double, almost triple,
Therefore she has said something controversial, to boost the podcast, which is doing well and giving her quite a bit of relevance again,- so everyone is a winner.

Only on Mumsnet they seem to think people have been reading her diary or some bullshit. Or they are pretending to, in order to admonish the OP, and/or use the cringe-worthy term ‘Daily Fail’, in order to try and make themselves look superior.

NerrSnerr · 03/07/2025 12:33

Amazing how many people are pro choice- unless someone makes a choice that they wouldn’t make themselves. Posters on all abortion threads always say ‘I’m pro choice, but….’.

MyUmberSeal · 03/07/2025 12:34

emilysquest · 03/07/2025 11:48

I have already given my tuppence worth on the subject of the thread but just have to come back to say that AIBU is really wild! You have a poster, @MyUmberSeal commenting specifically on the topic of the thread, then just a few posts later, after someone comments on what she said, claiming that she had "no idea" about the topic and never mentioned it! Pretty crazy stuff!

You’ve got the wrong end of the stick there, I was commenting on people getting at the OP for starting the thread, why she cares etc etc.

You've also misquoted. I didn’t mention not knowing about the topic at all. In fact I believe I said that a thread on this topic has been started on the feminism board and that there hadn’t been a fuss in that thread about the OP inviting a conversation on the subject.

I was referring to not knowing about the ‘LA issue’. Paid no attention to any of the posts that were specifically about LA.

So er … not crazy stuff at all really.

Clychaugog · 03/07/2025 12:38

'I can't remember' is the correct response from someone who doesn't want to answer a question they should never have been asked in the first place.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/07/2025 12:18

We do have birth control these days you know. You'd think that as someone who has lost a much wanted baby to stillbirth, she'd treat multiple, sloppy, unwanted conceptions and subsequent multiple terminations as something akin to popping a paracetamol for an annoying headache.

Early abortion isn't more dangerous or difficult than 'popping' paracetamol is.

How does an adult woman "accidentally" get pregnant 5 times?

How do men get women accidentally pregnant so many times?

I havent (and wont) read the article. Where they all accidental pregnancies? There are other reasons to have/need abortions.

nadine90 · 03/07/2025 12:45

I was disgusted when I saw the articles popping up on social media, but not at all surprised - that the gutter press jumped at the opportunity to enrage the public over a woman making choices for her own body and life.
Good on Lily and Miquita for sharing their very personal experiences so that other women might feel a little less shame around the subject. They would have known the likes of the daily fail would run wild with it.

CatsMagic · 03/07/2025 12:45

Hashbrownwithcheese · 03/07/2025 09:03

I think it is reasonable to continue a discussion that someone has opened up. I think we do need to have the discussion. It is great that this option is available to women, but I don't think we need to shut down conversations around it. Abortions can have a detrimental effect on your health, fertility and mental health so I think it is healthy to have open discussions about contraception. We do not want to glamorise abortion as contraception to young women.

Agree with this, we are seeing women being conditioned to become unemotional vessels, detached from their bodies, their sex/sexuality and their feelings - who does that suit I wonder ?

Sunshineandoranges · 03/07/2025 12:50

nomas · 03/07/2025 08:24

Can you give it a rest? It’s a chat forum. And Lily and Miquita were having an open ‘natter’ about it on their podcast.

Abortion doesn’t need to be a taboo subject.

I agree. If people don’t want to discuss it, then don’t..but don’t try to control the narrative. Years ago a friend of mine was told on going for I think the third abortion that she should stop using it as birth control.

I would class myself as pro-choice, but that's because I assume people are using it in a responsible way, and it is a last resort. Not because they've got pregnant 4 times accidentally, and still don't think they should bother with contraception so go on for a fifth.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/07/2025 12:58

Clychaugog · 03/07/2025 12:38

No, that would be 'mind your own business.'

She chose to talk about it with her friend to make money from their podcast. She wasn't exactly being given the Spanish Inquisition. And if Miquita did ask the question and it was unwelcome and inappropriate, LA had the option to edit it out.

JMSA · 03/07/2025 12:59

I agree with you, OP. Of course it’s bloody careless.
She doesn’t come across well generally though, so may court the controversy a bit.

Of course she remembers, she doesn't want to state it as people will come for her whatever the number!

I'm pro- the choice to eat meat. It doesn't mean I don't think animals farmed for food should be compassionately raised and compassionately slaughtered. I'm pro-the choice for women to dress as they choose. It doesn't mean I think it's appropriate to wear nothing but a thong, some nipple tassles and some cowboy boots to your job as an oncologist every day.

Having the freedom and the privilege to make choices shouldn't mean we condone completely shitty choices.

Itchytoe · 03/07/2025 08:15

And so you thought

Let’s have a good natter about it on AIBU

Are you the mumsnet police? You don’t own AIBU. Dont like the thread, don’t read it.

Horserider5678 · 03/07/2025 13:04

nomas · 03/07/2025 08:18

is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

You make it sound like she’s had dozens, she said it was ‘around 4 or 5 times’.

Wouldn’t having those babies have cost the NHS more?

However is she not using abortion as a form
of contraception? In the 21st century it’s really not necessary to need to have multiple abortions. And why does she choose to talk about it?

Sharptonguedwoman · 03/07/2025 13:04
