To ask what jobs people secretly (or not so secretly) look down on and why?

We’re always told “all work is valuable” and I do agree in principle, but if we’re honest, most of us have a job or two we side-eye, even if we don’t say it out loud. Is it how people behave in the role? The pay vs attitude? The ethics of the job itself?

AIBU to think it’s okay to admit we have judgements - as long as we’re willing to examine them?

That is sad, and I am sorry some people look down on you.
As I see it, pubs (even Spoons) can be a community hub for people.
I have spent hours in a Spoons just drinking tea and doodling. Got me out and it helped my mental health. Staff have always been nice.

People working in wether spoons do far more than pull pints. I've seen kindness, compassion, mental health awareness and assistance, first aid being administered. Because of the cheaper prices, long opening hours and welcoming atmosphere, alcohol dependent and vulnerable people are key features of most people's local wether spoons. Staff have to know how to deal effectively with these vulnerable (and let's face it, sometimes dangerous ) individuals and seem to do it very well indeed

Where I once worked,a patient was in on detox with alcohol induced dementia. He'd been a local at wetherpoons for decades. The staff bought him a card and used to visit. One bar lady bought him in toiletries and snacks and the bar manager was his point of contact. They were far less judgemental than some of the trained professionals.

Respect: you handle some of the most vulnerable and challenging in society (and very well) from what I've seen. That takes skill and compassion.

Funnily enough I was thinking about this today. Many of the most important jobs in society caring, cleaning, emptying bins and cleaning the streets, working in a sewerage works or a rubbish tip are looked down on by some people. It would be great if everyone had to do one of these types of jobs for a period of six months. A sort of conscription type system.Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes and all that. I cleaned and did care and bar work before going into teaching. My DH worked labouring in heavy industry for a year before going to University and then into banking. With regards to influencers they do irritate me probably because I don’t really understand them 😂. However on the news today there are 45,000 people employed directly and indirectly in that sort of thing? Better than no job.

I think your statement abput ‘everyone should have to do it for six months’ explains it all. Everyone could or thinks they could do the job, so they feel the people are replaceable. Not important.

Perplexing?! Says who? And...
so what if they are? I dislike when people come with vague descriptions to look intelligent.

Sez moi. I thought that was obvious.

I dislike people who make rhetorical statements to sound intelligent.

Luckily I've already moved on to engaging in proper discussion with other posters 😃

No. But I think we have to be careful about using race as a negative descriptor. There's no need for "white" to enter the equation. As I say, most of the richest men aren't actually white. If race (whether it be : black, Asian, white) is used as a slur, none are acceptable. It should be a level playing field. But I'll park it there.

White men have never in the entirety of history been oppressed by a POC. White men have been oppressed by other white men.

Nothing was rethorical, trust me. What you think is perplexing has no effect on someone else or their views. Drop it like is hot...

Not look down on as such but I'm mystified why bankers and the like earn so much money when their impact is minimal when other professions which are much worse paid, such as childcare, teachers, cleaners, have a tangible benefit but are paid less.

Edited

Since I moved into a male-dominated profession (85% men in this multinational), I realised that jobs coded female, anything involving nurturing, caring, cleaning etc. are paid like shit and the conditions are awful. It’s actually really simple. I came from one of those caring professions. I’m not saying that banking is still all men but traditionally so and the culture and conditions will have persisted to some extent.

Yes this is me - footballers for example versus the people who care for us, keep us alive and safe.

Totally this too, I think nurses and caters and all the people who contribute to a hospital enabling people to be helped should be on amazing salaries

CampanulaMila · 03/07/2025 00:13

I would very harshly judge anyone I met who worked for the arms trade.

My ex boyfriend was a junior Dr who worked in his brother's taxi firm in the evening to help it get off the ground. He said the difference in the way people treated him depending on which role he was doing, was a total education.

This is an interesting one. The arms trade is the defence industry by another name. You don't agree with defence?

Lots. You may not agree with DEI initiatives but they are real and add value to organisational culture and groups of people.

They don't create revenue. They are hired either because people think they do something worthwhile, or more often, because companies get other kinds of financial benefits through meeting targets set by outside groups, or sometimes in order to present a certain image to the public.

I can imagine this. I think there was a TV show once where there was a role swap and the conclusions support what you are saying in your example (I can't for the life of me remember the name of it though) sad really isn't it ? How some people are seen as "lesser" due to perceived lack of "importance"

Drop it like is hot? What does that mean?

It is not necessary to create revenue to be of value. Whilst one can question the motives of companies who have DEI initiatives, it does not mean it does not help to create a more inclusive environment for people who have less of a voice.

I am not as cynical as you.

Jeez, talking aboug leaps. Why did you put intellient in inverted commas? That was not my intention, people are allowed opinions and if they don't allign with yours, agree to disagree, respect the difference and drop it. No subtle meaning, no rethorical statements, no emotional "intelligence" answer. Exactly what it says. Carry on with your sighing though! Bloody hell, internet makes people show them true selves.

KrystalKrystal · 03/07/2025 00:20

Bus drivers. I used to be a physiotherapist but after a car accident I could no longer return to a physically demanding job. I love driving and became a bus driver five years ago. The shock I've received from many people, as if I've "lowered" myself. Especially my ex-MIL who burst into laughter and kept saying "a bus driver, really, I can't imagine you as one" yet both of her sons have been bus drivers for many years! Anyway I really love my job, earn a good salary and met my current partner there.

Bus drivers are essential to society, as we keep the public transport system running. Wish I could drive HGV but I can't load and unload the heavy items 😂
