To ask what jobs people secretly (or not so secretly) look down on and why?

We’re always told “all work is valuable” and I do agree in principle, but if we’re honest, most of us have a job or two we side-eye, even if we don’t say it out loud. Is it how people behave in the role? The pay vs attitude? The ethics of the job itself?

AIBU to think it’s okay to admit we have judgements - as long as we’re willing to examine them?

Exactly.

So the jobs I looked down on when I did OLD and men told me what they did were life coaches. Some life coaches are genuine and good but many are just grifters and I got the impression the men I spoke to fell into the latter. And indeed struck me as potential cocklodgers so that’s made me wary of life coaches 😂 same with anything that’s too MLM.

I have respect for the work tradies do but probably wouldn’t want to settle down with one as the ones I know seem to do very little at home due to wear and tear on their body. Understandable but not necessarily fair on their partners. It depends though!

I’m absolutely not impressed with Only fans / escorting etc either

Traffic wardens, it’s not an honest living, it’s just enabling another incredibly high tax often over a few minutes parking, if no one took the job the world would be a better place. And the poor employees get so much disgusting abuse for it

They are needed because some people park like cunts.
Where I live, a young female traffic warden had plaster poured on her head because a builder was parking like a knob, and she was doing her job. He went to court for the charge of assault by beating.

I say this as a lawyer (not in criminal sector) but criminal defence lawyers. How can one defend a murderer/paedofile etc

It is quite worrying that your understanding of your legal training is so poor that you don't understand how this works or what the principles are.

Did you skip the entirety of your law degree?

No. But I think we have to be careful about using race as a negative descriptor. There's no need for "white" to enter the equation. As I say, most of the richest men aren't actually white. If race (whether it be : black, Asian, white) is used as a slur, none are acceptable. It should be a level playing field. But I'll park it there.

RightOnTheEdge · 02/07/2025 23:46

I work in a Wetherspoons and a lot of posters on MN look down on my job.

I've seen some vile posts on here about Spoons staff before, some that made me feel like shit.

I cannot see how a private company would create a job just to keep somebody employed if there wasn't an actual use even if it was reputational, regulatory or paperwork created by the government. This company would go bust quite soon.

I cannot speak for the public / civil service.

How many people have been hired to manage DEI stuff for private companies?

Look. You don't like me. Ok. That's fine. But don't start the petty "gang up". It's just silly.

After my recent experience with several, estate agents.

That is sad, and I am sorry some people look down on you.
As I see it, pubs (even Spoons) can be a community hub for people.
I have spent hours in a Spoons just drinking tea and doodling. Got me out and it helped my mental health. Staff have always been nice.

Yes this is me - footballers for example versus the people who care for us, keep us alive and safe.

Well if you think about is effort in versus reward. Footballers require an enormous amount of skill and talent and train intensively all their career. Also they peak in their 20s then they go down, their career is very short. Nurse, with few years in school anybody can do, football very few make it to.play for good money, and out of those who make it even less stay on. Any injury can be catastrophic and the risk of injury is so high. I, for one, admire immensely all athlets that compete on national level.

Lots. You may not agree with DEI initiatives but they are real and add value to organisational culture and groups of people.

Football is also entertainment. Like actors really. They earn lots because they are super talented at what they do. People pay to see them,

Of course, that too! I was thinking more along the lines of comparing with a caring job for example.

You don't have to like my views. But I'm still allowed them. You can judge me all you like. You're also allowed to do that. But once someone has given their opinion, you have disagreed and I accept you disagree (hence my lack of response to your last post ) that's generally where you 'leave it'.

Footballers attract money. Carers do not.
