Still vote Labour?

After one year of Labour rule, if you could go back in time and vote again, would you still vote the same.

i voted Tory, and still would, although I also thought change was good, and I was genuinely excited to get a breath of fresh air in number 10, I had quite high hopes.

im now depressed that we are very probably going to get Reform in 4 years.

would you vote differently?

Yes, I would vote Labour again in the absence of any reasonable alternative. I don't particularly like Starmer but I could never bring myself to vote Tory, especially after last 14 years of lies, corruption and wanton destruction of our public services. Reform make me sick to my stomach.
I suppose I could consider the Lib Dems but having previously been taken in by Nick Clegg only for them to get into bed with the Tories I would be reluctant to put my faith in them again.

Didimum · 02/07/2025 18:08

Voted Labour. Would do so again.

No government can fix the current issues to satisfy everyone or even anyone right now. They are intensely too complex and too long term. Chopping and changing governments will only exacerbate.

A downward spiral will be tough for everyone eventually.

I did vote Labour and I will again.

ghostyslovesheets · 02/07/2025 18:20

Reform councils are in a mess already with councillors admitting they don’t know what they are doing! They promised to cut spending but failed to grasp most of the spending was on statutory services! Don’t get me started on their Dodge attempt 😂

id vote labour again - it’s been one year - they have to get things back on track before things get better

im glad MPs rebelled- I didn’t agree with the cuts but they have made some good decisions, they are investing in infrastructure, have reduced NHS lists, settled a trade deal with Europe, the economy is slowly improving after dive bombing post Brexit and the mismanagement of it.

im giving them time to deal with the basics rather than having a knee jerk reaction to the first 12 months.

personally I’d be happy to pay more tax as well

I'm depressed that we could have this utterly shocking Labour govt FOR four years! 😩

Cluborange666 · 02/07/2025 18:23

Yes as Reform and the Tories represent everything I find abhorrent. Starmer has got a lot of things right despite the constant threads on here.

Agrumpyknitter · 02/07/2025 18:28

I like Labour and would have voted them in, except we had to vote strategically where we live and voted for Lib Dem’s to keep the Tories out! Can’t stand Reform. We used to have less disparity in income and wealth between the rich and poor this gap has only widened under successive Tory Governments.

Labour have given us the NHS the Tories voted against its creation 22 times. Let’s be real the Tories don’t care about the average working person. Employment laws which are designed to protect us, worsened under the Tories they are not the party for workers rights either.https://www.ier.org.uk/news/7-employment-rights-you-have-lost-under-tory-pm/

I was close to voting for them this time, but won't consider voting for them again for a decade or two at least.

The assisted dying bill and the decriminalisation of abortion remove protections for the most vulnerable in society.

The schools bill fundamentally changes the balance of power between parents and the state.

They've been awful for the economy too, but that's not quite so appalling. I was pleasantly surprised by the PM's wise handing of foreign policy though.

Downwiththmoonshine · 02/07/2025 18:45

It looks to me like Labour are deliberately sabotaging themselves. KS certainly doesn't look like he wants to be PM and he couldn't make a decision properly to save his life.

If I were a Labour voter I'd be really worried for the parties' future. Labour got in this time round because they were a protest vote.
Reform will be the next protest vote if Labour don't do something drastic (sacking KS and his hangers on would be a good start).

I doubt it. Last year there was a lot of tactical voting to get the Tories out. I imagine the same would apply to keep Reform out - if they still exist in 2029.

After the Labour backbench rebellion on incapacity benefits things are about to get a whole lot worse over the next four years starting with the Autumn Budget.

pinotnow · 02/07/2025 18:53

I voted for them and would again. None of the good things they do are ever mentioned and the shit show they inherited is brushed over. I'm not happy with everything but it's definitely an improvement on what we had and mostly moving in the right direction.

Not happy with the rebels though. Bloody irresponsible and arrogant.

I agree with you on Reform but unfortunately this Labour backbench rebellion will only weaken Labour further and make the likelihood of a Reform victory at the 2029 election much stronger.

Blair had worse and then won another two elections.

11 December 1997 Mr Blair's first major rebellion - 47 backbenchers oppose his plans to cut benefits to single parents.

Some 100 abstain, one minister and two Private Parliamentary Secretaries resign their posts, and a ministerial aide is sacked.

But because of Labour's large majority in the House of Commons, the government still managed to win all votes comfortably.

"As for Reform - an abomination of a leader who openly supports Trump and wanted to work for him - until Musk got in on the act. Sadly they are a party attracting racist voters."

Dismissing Reform voters as racists rather than voters who are disillusioned with the current Labour/ Conservative duopoly will only help to ensure a Reform win at the next election.

Happyher · 02/07/2025 19:00

I voted for them and would again. They done a lot but all we hear are the things the right wing media barons want us to. I don’t consider what happened this week a U turn but democracy in action. Just because the last Tory govt had a revolving door of PM’s it doesn’t mean you can get rid of Starmer after a year. Traditionally PM’s serve at least two terms if the electorate vote for them. We need a stable government in this country after the Tory fiasco since 2016. Reform would bring about the same chaos as Trump is.

As far as I can work out the British public want everything now but don’t want to pay for anything

1dayatatime · 02/07/2025 19:03

@BIossomtoes

"Blair had worse and then won another two elections. "

The difference is Blair didn't back down in the face of the rebellion and pushed on regardless. Plus the levels of Government debt to GDP back then were less than half of the current figures.

After this backdown Labour economically have nowhere to go other than a steady economic decline between now and 2029. After which there is a strong chance of a Reform victory.

You said a rebellion would only weaken the general further and decrease its chances of reelection. I pointed out that history doesn’t support that argument. There’s no need to go all Vicky Pollard in response.

What have they done?

This affects thousands of people where I live - its not just the jobs at JLR but the money those jobs spend in the local community keeping the economy going.

Agree. This is exactly what happened during the 2019 referendum... and then people were surprised when Brexit won!

Britneyfan · 03/07/2025 07:48

I voted Labour and would do again, not that it makes any difference in my very safe Conservative area. I am still gobsmacked anyone voted Tory last time!

kistanbul · 05/07/2025 10:32

Would vote Labour again.

Still years of this government to go.

Tories are in a mess. Reform are unserious. Lib Dems feel like a serious party but not a potential government.

it’s not going well but the alternatives are still worse.

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 02/07/2025 17:40

What have they done?

Do you acknowledge the shit show left behind by the Tory party? the fact that they knew we'd ran out of prison places, the state the whole justice system was in, the lack of assurances/money back on the Rwanda deal, how badly underfunded everything was etc etc. I don't see what the Tory oarty was doing for the UK and its population.
The new talks and deals with France are positive. The French can now intercept boats going out in shallow water.
I agree that the decision making and lack of thought is shocking. But there are actions being done. We needed a change, I don't think that Labour could do what people expected, they've inherited a country in a despicable state.
