AIBU we leave on holiday tomorrow morning and …

We leave on holiday tomorrow morning, and I’m the only one packed. DH and two older teens have done nothing. They barely seem to have registered that we are going tomorrow.

AIBU to just leave them to it, and if that means they have nothing but what they are standing up in then maybe they will learn for next time?

(so as not to drip feed, it’s a U.K. self catering holiday but we have to leave at 8am tomorrow, and the location is remote. There will be a small supermarket but no clothes shops.)

Tell your DH I'm embarrassed for him. He's a grown man, presumably with a job. Why didn't he think to check the arrangements?

orangedream · 01/07/2025 23:30

I usually pack before I go to bed. Probably takes me 20 minutes.

sweetpickle2 · 01/07/2025 23:33

Your DH is a child.

WobblyLondoner · 01/07/2025 23:35

@Sundaybananas I feel your pain - we are leaving on a similar sounding trip tomorrow and DS is not packed and not home …

My deadline deadline is 9 am and I’m not budging. DP is on board too though - he is fully packed but is also a bit of a faffer, which doesn’t help.. Good luck.

@Blossomtoes I bet you look really well put together on holidays

I look OK. I only wear black, white or blue so everything goes with everything else. Stick on red lipstick and shades and it’s all good to go.

This is why you should have your colours done. Even if you don't belive the "makes your eyes pop" stuff. Everything in my wardrobe goes with everything else. No, it doesn't matter which tops.

Nope. I pack the night before I don’t any prep in the weeks before (I might shave my legs the morning of!) I’ve been known to pack in the morning.

I don’t iron ever, on holiday or otherwise.

Ditto. I’ve only ever packed the morning that I leave.

No salon visits, no new clothes, don’t own an iron. Life is too damn short.

Your DH is a child.

This. Your boys are basically ready and were previously operating from dh info. Therefore he is the problem.

Also, this is where owning a large number of the same coloured top (ie black) really pays off.

I hope you get away on time OP

I used to be a Packing Procrastinator™®© and DP hated it. Then I developed a system. I have a little note document in Google Keep on my phone (but Word etc will do too) with everything that I need, or sometimes need, to pack for any trip. It looks like this:

T-shirts ✅ (and so on for every clothing category)
Sun hat ✅
Walking shoes ✅
Medicine ✅
Shampoo ✅
Mosquito spray ✅
Selection of credit cards ✅
Phone charger ✅
etc etc etc

The master list starts off with ❌ in every position. For each trip I make a copy of that, and then change ❌ to ✅ when I either put the item in the luggage, or decide I'm not taking it. When the list is all green I'm ready to go, and I know that I haven't forgotten anything obvious.

Over time this list this has grown, but it's pretty stable now. I can also add temporary reminders, so even though we're packing for summer now, I have "DD's dog's Xmas present ❌" which means I won't forget it when the time comes.

What I've found is that this enables me to pack quite late and still be confident that I won't miss anything. Maybe for the future OP can see if the rest of the family can be persuaded to do this, so that the last-minute "Have you forgotten anything" can be a bit more structured?

Have evolved a similar system except that I have several different templates, depending on if it's a one or two night trip, a work one or a longer proper holiday. Tick things off. Sorted.

I use the same temate for all trips, but for some trips most of it is just crossed off.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/07/2025 00:19

Tell them if they have forgotten anything then they will have to but replacements WITH THEIR OWN MONEY. *which might not be easy if you're heading off to somewhere like a remote Scottish island.
It worked for my DS when he forgot to pack any underwear.

NotDarkGothicMama · 02/07/2025 00:21

Safe travels OP!

I don't pack for my 15 and 12yo DC anymore. I check they have everything they need a week before we go, order anything missing and let them get on with it. They bring far too many clothes but there haven't been any disasters (yet).

Sundaybananas · 02/07/2025 00:46

I think we’re going to make it!

DH is now packed. DS1 is still waiting for the tumble drier to finish, but has everything ready apart from that. I spent the evening with a glass of wine, happy to answer questions if asked but not nagging and not doing it for them.

And I stand by my approach of not doing it for them! 😀They’ll all be more efficient next time.

Though to be fair, as someone pointed out, it wasn’t the boys fault. They were working from misinformation from DH. And at the appropriate time tomorrow I’ll show DH the texts I sent him, and his replies to them 😆

17 and 28???

They don't need reminders,I thought you were gonna say 12/13

Ah just seen the recent update, good result op

No salon visits, no new clothes, don’t own an iron. Life is too damn short.

Really? I think about my preparation and wonder how we are so different

Spring clean house ready to return
Clean fridge and cupboards
Pet delivery
book shopping
salon visit for hair
Salon visit for wax, pedicure and manicure
Wash and iron everything
Security lights etc
house checks
water plants
buy new clothes if needed
match with jewellery
cosmetics bought
trips, activities and restaurants booked
last calls to family
book food shopping for return
Double check schedule and hotels
passsport check and paperwork
car refuelled, washed and cleaned and ready
Meals planned for travelling days
snacks and water for journey
washing completed

How can this be done in a few hours?!

Gemütlich81 · 02/07/2025 05:23

You have handled it really well OP. I will take a leaf out of your book next time I am travelling with DH!

THisbackwithavengeance · 02/07/2025 05:26

All this go on holiday without them or with the clothes they’re standing in sounds good on the internet but the reality is that you want a nice family holiday with no screaming or arguments or drama.

Go into their room with a suitcase and stand over them whilst they pack. Yeah it’s shit and you shouldn’t have to but if you don’t, it’s going to ruin the start of your holiday.

mathanxiety · 02/07/2025 05:51

Don't remind them.
Pack your bag into the car at 7:55 and leave at 8.

They're waiting for mum to sort everything out. Teach them a lesson.

There's no need for screaming, arguments, or drama if she brings headphones and/ or walks out of every room where screaming and arguments start up. Or just simply ignores the whining and complaining and feigns interest in some speck on the wall.

She doesn't have to put up with that shit. She needs to teach them that lesson too.

It HAS to be a joke. Wouldn’t make any sense to get mani pedi done at the same salon as a bikini wax. And she forgot about preparing the “welcome home” banner for their triumphant return.
