AIBU we leave on holiday tomorrow morning and …

We leave on holiday tomorrow morning, and I’m the only one packed. DH and two older teens have done nothing. They barely seem to have registered that we are going tomorrow.

AIBU to just leave them to it, and if that means they have nothing but what they are standing up in then maybe they will learn for next time?

(so as not to drip feed, it’s a U.K. self catering holiday but we have to leave at 8am tomorrow, and the location is remote. There will be a small supermarket but no clothes shops.)

The problem with it being a UK holiday is that I guess you'll be driving. It would be better if you had a plane or ferry to catch, because it means you HAVE to leave by a certain time and if they are not properly ready, tough.

Whereas, I see in your future a long and painful morning tomorrow where you are ready to get on the road and nobody else is. They'll all be rolling their eyes at you and telling you calm down and chill and stop stressing about the time, while they blow dust off their suitcases and start looking for specific T shirts and saying 'Muuuum? Where are my black shorts? Did you remember to wash them?'

Sundaybananas · 01/07/2025 21:31

So, it just became apparent that apparently DH told them we weren’t going to be leaving until lunch time. No idea why. We talked through the itinerary and I even texted it to him.

Both kids are now sorting their stuff out, including finding bags, rucksacks, phone chargers, headphones etc. I took pity on 18 year old and changed the washing machine cycle for him.

DH is still playing a computer game. I reminded him again, but that’s the last time.

First time I let teens pack one dd turned up wearing flip flops with no other shoes packed... Walking trip in Scotland..
Dh didn't pack a towel. I made him go source one while we relaxed...

@Sundaybananas its always the same!! women spend a good few weeks getting holiday ready! beauty salon visited, legs done, clothes washed, clothes ironed, new stuff bought, all laid out in a spare bedroom ready to go in case. Men on the other hand! well my man. out to town and buys one named polo shirt and that is it. everything else is folded up including linen trousers and holiday shirts and shorts! if he thinks for one minute that I am spending my holiday time ironing then he can think on! this is why, when you go on holiday, women are all done and smart, up to the 9's and the men look like they are dressed in rags!!!

Nope. Like I said, we have to check in for a ferry, so a hard deadline 😀

Agreed. The only person getting stressed now is you. The holiday will be spoiled for everyone if they don't have their stuff. You will never get away at 8am.
I wouldn't do it for them but I would yell at everyone to get packed tonight.

Exactly! The 8am deadline will not happen.

Sundaybananas · 01/07/2025 21:27

Typo. 18.

Thank God! 😅

TrousersOfTime · 01/07/2025 21:35

OP. Your teenagers are not the problem. DH clearly is. And it will absolutely serve him right if he has to wash his undies in the sink all week!
TBF, I can pack in 20 minutes for most trips, so I wouldn't necessarily have seen it as an issue that they hadn't all packed the night before a 8-9 am departure. But your latest update...I'd be cross with him! Is he usually this useless?

Cross posted! Ferry crossing booked so it had to happen!

Blobbitymacblob · 01/07/2025 21:36

Leave them to it op. The million is that they will forget something important, and learn from the experience. You can’t put an old head on young shoulders and letting dc mess up is a gift to them.

Ime it takes about an hour to get a family out of the house on the morning of a holiday.

TheChosenTwo · 01/07/2025 21:38

Me and dh are both extremely last minute packers (or what many people would consider so anyway). For a departure of 8am we would pack at 7am, really doesn’t take long but I’m always on top of the washing and other than clothing/shoes, washbag, some chargers and dds medication nothing else is essential. It doesn’t take very long at all. We are both usually packed in about 15 minutes.
the dc would do it the day before so they didn’t have to get up too early but honestly if they aren’t packed then tough shit, you go without them or they go and accept they are unprepared and it’s on them.

TheChosenTwo · 01/07/2025 21:39

Obviously passports are essential too for leaving the country!

Nope. I pack the night before I don’t any prep in the weeks before (I might shave my legs the morning of!) I’ve been known to pack in the morning.

I don’t iron ever, on holiday or otherwise.

Notquitegrownup2 · 01/07/2025 21:42

Totally misses the point but what type of washing machine allows you to change the cycle?? I thought that was a big no no.

indoorplantqueen · 01/07/2025 21:42

I mean how long does it take to pack? I’ve done mine in 20 minutes, about 40 if I need to iron a few bits, but for a uk sc holiday I’d just iron there.

LlynTegid · 01/07/2025 21:43

If you have to leave them behind, no late departure. No 'I'll give it a couple of minutes'. Even if you end up spending the week by yourself.

Hope it does not come to that.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/07/2025 21:43

BIossomtoes · 01/07/2025 21:12

Same. I can pack in ten minutes. Duplicate toiletries already in wash bag. A week’s worth of underwear and tops, two pairs of shoes and trousers. Makeup bag, kindle and iPad thrown in at last minute.

You don't care WHICH tops then?

G5000 · 01/07/2025 21:45

if it's a cottage in the middle of nowhere, probably doesn't matter which tops

grumpygrape · 01/07/2025 21:46

You can only do so much.Pack your stuff and the generic stuff in the car and leave when you said you all had to, to catch the ferry. If they get left behind or they haven’t got things they need then they’ll blame you but you can tell them you don’t give a damn because, surprise, surprise, they are adults !

Actually, if they all miss the departure deadline you might have a lovely restful holiday.... 😊😂

Moveoverdarlin · 01/07/2025 21:48

For a UK holiday I could pack in about ten minutes. And I’m someone that really bothers about what they wear, I love clothes and fashion and always takes all my toiletries and hair shit. Ten mins is all I would need providing everything had been washed and ironed.

Not sure if it’s allowed but I do it on mine. I just spin it to off wait a couple minutes then turn it back on and select the new cycle.

bellamorgan · 01/07/2025 21:54

Why did he tell them the afternoon???

We are leaving at 4am later this year. If it’s not in the Stack by 3:30 well it will end up on your lap in the back. Including DH stuff and his the one driving so we won’t be late even if he hasn’t packed. He will just throw clothes in like a mad man then moan he doesn’t have a belt or other shoes.

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 01/07/2025 21:56

SaturdayDream · 01/07/2025 19:52

Just get it sorted now or tomorrow will start with drama.

Really? 🙄

KnittingOnEmpty · 01/07/2025 21:58

My DH would forget something and rather than do without would decide it was so essential he'd ruin a day by driving miles to buy a new whatever at inflated price while rest of family has to wait around.

To be honest this sounded more like why it has happened, there's no way teenagers would be leaving at 8am and would consider getting up early to pack in the morning surely? would they even be up in time? Glad they've got their act together.

I always pack the car the night before to avoid this sort of bullshit, it's adds an incredible amount of stress to what should be a fun time!

Your DH sounds utterly selfish.
