To not want to be asked for charity donations every time I pay for something in a shop?

pennyHD · 01/07/2025 14:51

It’s happening everywhere; even at a self serve check out we’re asked if we want to ‘round up’ for charity.

Every single charity shop I go in now does it at the till. I’m always polite and say no, not today when they ask for more money, but a man who works in one of the shops I go in takes a no very personally and starts slamming the till around and shoves my receipt in my hand whilst glaring at me. He once shouted at me for not wanting to ‘help people’ when I said no.

I give a lot to charity but I want to donate when and how I choose to, and not be put on the spot.

And as for shops like Tesco asking for charity donations, they can fuck right off and donate out of their hefty profits.

They used to have collection buckets/tins/boxes on the side for you to toss your change into. I always drop pennies in them when it was like 99p because they are faffy

But with most people paying card, it's just the virtual way of giving you that option

Just click no and crack on if you don't want to do it. If the assistant (and I can assure you most of us hate asking too) does hassle you just blank them.

Blingismything · 01/07/2025 16:59

i generally say ‘not today thank-you’ although I have occasionally pressed the green button.

Driving me mad too, shops, restaurants and this week even my local charity shop.

But just as maddening is the barrage of questions you have to go through to use a self service checkout in some places. Scan your loyalty card, do you want a bag? how do you want to pay? can you insert your card? do you want to make a charity donation? do you want a receipt?

No I just want to scan my goods, flash my card and walk out for goodness sake.

Yes Waitrose is especially annoying… they have “gift vouchers” as the default setting so one needs to search for pay by card.

another charity hating thread….

no, it's not charity hating, it's hating certain charity antics which is completely reasonable.

When my DB was a student, he was completely broke and was going without food some days. Me and DM were giving him money when we could. DM sat down to look at his bank account/spending and found on there charity direct debits that he had signed up to out of guilt from chuggers - despite not having any food for himself.

outerspacepotato · 01/07/2025 17:04

"how supermarkets now have charities standing at the checkout exits accosting people."

How do you know they're for real? Accosting? I'd be thinking scam and honestly, that just wouldn't go down too well where I am. There would be fights.

We get the round up the total to donate but that's a corporate tax write off and I consider it a scam.

PutThe · 01/07/2025 17:06

Yanbu, it's really irritating. I will make my charitable donations in a manner that doesn't allow Tesco et al to take any credit for them.

Hellohelga · 01/07/2025 17:07

These charitable donations are tax deductible. They aren’t doing it because they love whales.

BinWars · 01/07/2025 17:09

NC28 · 01/07/2025 14:54

Agree. McDonald’s do it too.

The worst ones are when you go to pay for something in a shop, the cashier hands you the card reader and you need to press the green button (yes) or red button (no) as it’s asking for a donation on the screen.

Either look like a cheapskate, or be forced to give when you don’t want to. I don’t like it.

Edited

Trust me, we don't care if you press yes or no! Just press the button and crack on. And there's no point complaining to us, we hate it as much as you do and it's set by head office. Having the same "oh everyone does this now" conversation eleven billion times a day gets tiring!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 01/07/2025 17:09

LIDL do it now as well (for the NSPCC I think) but usually the checkout staff apologise in advance because they must know how much it pisses people off.

I work in retail and we have to ask, I don’t particularly like doing it but it’s part of the job. It works as well, For comic relief the company raised over 2 million in pound donations.

Was it the company that raised the money or the customers ?

I have found a effective way of stopping cashiers getting in a strop ( which I have had quit a few times ) is asking if tesco / boots / asda et al match my donation , Nope, even though they are huge companies with massive profits? Then this low wage individual isn't donating either then .

No, harassment hating. Posters have repeatedly mentioned giving to charities they have chosen themselves, not that have been chosen for them to offset the tax of national retail chains.

No, their CUSTOMERS DONATED it! The company really shouldn't be getting or having the cheek to take the credit!

WhatsThatComing · 01/07/2025 17:34

I agree. My local Morrisons, which is in a poor area, always has someone as you come out asking for money.

Today’s was the Dog’s Trust.

Oh, don’t you like animals?’ she said as I walked past.

You can just say no, I don’t donate at tills either because I donate via standing order to another charity. If you have a problem with being asked or the attitude of staff if you say no then email their head office.

This is the point at which you say yes, but only roasted.

RhubarbAndFlustered · 01/07/2025 17:41

I’m a hell no for charity donations and tipping (unless in a sit down restaurant or my hairdresser). I would welcome someone banging around and acting rudely if I said no thanks. They’d have to explain it to their manager after I make a complaint. I was asked just this week to give a tip of 15%, 30% or 50% when buying an already expensive personalised fridge magnet from a website! No. Shove yer donations and tips up your entitled arses, thanks.

I agree, its annoying. Usually at charity shop tills they say it knowing that other customers will hear you saying no, so its like they're shaming you into paying extra.

And the charity collectors in Boots / Sainsbury's etc are so annoying.

Recently was in town, had a chugger in Boots and then someone asking if I wanted to round up my purchase in a charity shop. I said no. I thought it's priced fairly, as opposed to a bargain, I've spent £16.50 on a dress and I don't want it rounded up. The person seemed a bit taken aback.. but really I'm already supporting the charity.

I feel like you do , op. I want to choose when I give to charity . And definitely don't want to sign up for a monthly dd.

there will be a target number of customers who round up managers get it in the ear for they don’t reach

QueenOfHiraeth · 01/07/2025 17:46

I'm assertive enough to just press No and move on but noticed one shop I was in recently had switched the options over and it was Red for Yes and Green for No which I did complain about.

They seem to have turned it off in my local Lidl... Probably because of people moaning about it 😀 It lasted about 2 weeks 😂

I agree. At the beginning of each year I decide what I will donate to and that is the end of the matter. A couple of places always on the list, others may vary according to circumstances. If shops or other businesses wish to donate then they can do so from their (tax deductable) profits.

Absolutely agree with this approach. We are not wealthy, but we 'get by'. Our charities are certainly our own business.

Chuggers get shouted at loudly in the street by me, (I've had a bystanders' round of applause before now!)

Gingertam · 01/07/2025 17:56

The Co-op near me have chuggers inside the door regularly. I just walk past now and go to Tesco Express who never have them. I think it's disgusting they're allowed to hassle people doing their shopping. Most self-service tills ask too. It's relentless.

I never donate. It doesn’t bother me what anyone thinks.

Yanbu. I just press no.
