AIBU to think I have no liability here? (diagram attached)

I think I'm fairly sure on this but can't stop panicking so I thought I'd ask on here.
Friday night I had a car accident. It was a real shock and it's only now that I've stopped to think about it that I'm feeling really really cross.
In the diagram I'm the blue line, the other driver is the green line. The thick lines show where we went, the thin lines indicate where you would have expected us to be going. Given that the lady tried to tell me she'd been going straight on when obviously she didn't makes me wonder if she had a mad moment!
Anyway, this particular roundabout leads onto a bridge over a dual carriageway. On the other side of this bridge you can go left onto a local road, or right to join the dual carriageway.
When we joined the roundabout, the other car was to my left. Neither of us indicated before joining the roundabout, however I did indicate left after I passed the 1st left exit as I was planning to go over the bridge and turn right to join the duel carriageway. As I was about to leave the roundabout the lady turned in front of me to head back round the roundabout and I hit her in the side of the car. Slow speed, maybe 15 mph.
It turns out that we have the same insurance company just to complicate matters.
I'm pretty sure that she is liable for this accident, what do you all think?

YABU: you are liable
YANBU: you are not liable

Honestly, I think you were both wrong. Unless it's a three lane roundabout? YOu should have been in the left hand lane to turn left by then, and she should have been in the right hand lane. She is MORE wrong, but if i was your insurance company I would consider this joint liability.

This!

I notice that you didn't answer the question.

YOU are talking about islands with single lane carriageways as exits and the 'rule of thumb', which is left for left and straight on, right for anything after.. it's common knowledge.. It is also completely irrelevant to OPs situation as she was exiting on to a dual carriageway in the CORRECT LANE. Your rule of thumb does not apply to dual carriageways where multiple lanes/cars exit side by side.

The diagram is pretty concise, if you don't understand it or think it is somehow wrong then you probably shouldn't be driving to be honest.

If it was a single lane, you wouldn’t have a left or right lane on the approach to the roundabout- so what’s your point?

No one said single lane roundabout I said single lane exits.. if the island comprised single lane exits, rule of thumb applies. No one is disputing that.

You seem to think it is a bit of a 'gotcha' and that rule of thumb applies to OP, but it's just making you look silly because OPs island has a dual lane exit, left and right lane can and DO go straight on to the 12 o clock position. So the "left is the only lane to go straight" on DOES NOT APPLY in this situation.

Have you not driven much on dual carriageways? You have really never come across two lanes entering an island, two lanes going round an island and two lanes exiting an island straight ahead?

I’m not treating it as a gotcha moment at all. But I’ve never had an accident on a roundabout and OP has…

So if were out in your car today, and someone made a mistake and drove into you, you would be a worse driver than yesterday?

It has been clarified the other driver basically did a lane change without indicating or looking.

Fratolish · 08/07/2025 08:13

I don't think I have ever seen anyone quite so dedicated to being wrong as TwinklySquid. I don't know why anyone is still arguing with them, you could get the person who actually wrote that bit of the Highway Code on the thread and they'd argue with them.

Deep breath.

But OP WAS NOT IN THE WRONG LANE
SHE WAS IN THE CORRECT LANE TO EXIT ROUNDABOUT ONE AT 12 O'CLOCK AND THE SECOND ROUNDABOUT AT 3 O'CLOCK.

Yes, I know it's rude to shout on forums but sometimes one needs to make a point.

so you think the woman who hit OP was in the correct lane?

She was in the left lane turning right on the island.

It’s always salutary to read a roundabout thread. It wakes you up to the utter incompetence and unreliability of other road users.

And that applies regardless of who is right! Both sides of this discussion need to know what the other road users are thinking!

Drive like everyone else is incompetent and about to make a mistake.

You’re absolutely right. I’d like to think that the OP won’t make the same mistake again. She could have saved herself a lot of worry and hassle.

myplace · 08/07/2025 13:48

Nah, I’m with OP @derxa

Some accidents are unavoidable, no matter how defensively you drive!

Gremlinsateit · 08/07/2025 13:50

I do think that the reference in the Highway Code to the “appropriate” lane is not helpful or clear.

I’m in Australia and the road rules for my state say, unless the road signage shows otherwise, left lane goes left, right lane goes right or makes full turn, straight ahead can choose either lane.

And you absolutely don’t change lanes in the middle of a roundabout, as some PPs seem to be suggesting!

You still haven't answered who you think should be in the right hand lane on the first roundabout.

I have- someone going past the 12 o clock point.

TwinklySquid · 08/07/2025 14:53

I have- someone going past the 12 o clock point.

In you world then, OP has to enter the first roundabout either in the left hand lane or move from her right hand lane entry lane to the left hand lane and then when she has passed the 9 o'clock exit and entry has to move back over to the right hand lane to exit the roundabout on the right hand lane to be in the correct (right hand) lane to exit the second roundabout at 3 o'clock?

Funny how you've not answered the question about the diagram if you are so sure you're are correct..

So you think the red car cannot carry straight on a dual carriageway (as in the diagram below) and it is the wrong lane in the daigram below?

Yes or no?

I don't think TwinklySquid has ever actually used a multilane roundabout.

Or keeps lane dodging and endangering everyone else on the roundabout. 🙄

sandyhappypeople · 08/07/2025 20:26

I didn't think you'd answer the question about the diagram @TwinklySquid , to do so, you would have to admit that you are in fact completely wrong and you have no idea how to navigate multiple lane roundabouts.

It was pretty obvious that you haven't got a clue (plenty of opinions though!), so you're just here to argue with people then it seems.

Oh dear heavens, you just don’t get it do you ? I honestly wonder how many accidents you have caused. The OP didn’t cause an accident; the other driver did.
