Pram left overnight in the garden!

Definetly not "end of the world" stuff, but I got quite angry about this.
We have a double buggy that doesn't fit through our front door so needs to be built up outside every time we want to go out, not an issue. Monday mornings are nursery run mornings, I need to get the 7:20am bus. DW always at work. We're both females.
She was sorting jobs out last night while I got the baby settled for sleep. She came upstairs and told me she had built the pram up and just left it in the garden! We have never done that before and I don't like the idea of it. She said it wasn't going to rain so didn't see the issue. Problem is we saw a rat in the garden last week and after speaking with the neighbours turns out that 3 doors down have a rat problem.
I didn't shout at her but I did irritably tell her to go and get the pram in the house because I didn't want rats touching it and she said I was being absolutely ridiculous.
So..
YABU - Leaving the pram outside (weather approving) clearly saves time.
YANBU - Rats carry diseases and its not safe to leave it out.
And would you leave a pram outside at all regardless of the rats?

It was weird but I always found my newborn / baby was happier outside if a bit unsettled. She / he would be crying or unsettled… I’d fling open the garden door, walk out and…. Hallelujah!

Same with the oldest, this new baby just doesn't seem to like anything 😅 nah he's been colicky, but we're nearing the end of that thankfully 🤞 x

Yep. This is how we live too. But considering I only saw and learnt about the rat issue last week we have been a bit more cautious about food in the gardens and making sure any of the 13 week old stuff doesn't stay out there in case of diseases 🤷🏻‍♀️

Shame that that’s likely going to be the case for the rest of the summer then 😢

I could not deal with the faff of assembling a buggy every morning! Leaving it outside with a protective cover chucked over it is far better.

Doesn't bother me 🤷🏻‍♀️ x

I have just realised the pram wasn’t even left out! Your partner told you that evening that she’d set it up for you and it was out in the garden.

You told her to bring it in (irritably)

She did.

So that’s it?

I know 😢 we have lovely patio doors too and they're usually open all day but we've been more hesitant, especially since the toddler leaves bits of random food dotted about. I've contacted the council and hopefully they can come and give us some reassurance soon x

Yep! I just wondered what other people would do if there were rats in the area 🤷🏻‍♀️

and told her to go and bring it inside or I would have to go and do it myself when the baby was asleep.

did she obey? Or did you?

You don't ever wash your hands?

I do but wouldnt be the first thing to cross my mind after touching a bit of grass 😂 the thought of being cautious about grass and not letting my babies play outside on grass untill a certain age is mind-boggling to me and I would never survive that kinda thought process 😅

I would bring it in

but 100% it would NOT impact me and children being in the garden a LOT all over summer, and eating out there and playing

Obey? Okay..
She went out and got it in, baby wasn't settling. She never had an issue with the practicality of bringing it in, she just didn't agree with me about the rats.

We do still go out. I'm just conscious about my toddlers crumbs everywhere so now we tidy up the garden on an evening. And bring in all the toys and stuff my toddler took out from the house. I'm not worried about us or the older ones. It's just the baby I'm being extra careful with

It never escalates with us, we just agree to disagree and move on. We don't do big arguments. We enjoy discussing everything that's happened and trying to see the others point of view, we ended up sitting in bed googling and talking about rats for an hour 🤣

Yes, greater precautions until about three months, by when a stronger immune system has developed. As time goes on, they actually benefit from wider exposure to microbes. It helps immunity develop further. But if all that wouldn't cross your mind, why worry?

im not worrying 😅 my babies were bought up literally strapped to my back, in the “barn pram” which was the outside pram left out in the sheep shed , in a tractor cab etc. They are never unwell and were never unwell as babies, if they do catch the ocasional colds etc that go around they are usually better in a day or so no need to worry :)

I left a car seat outside for a night and it got chewed to kingdom come by rats… the straps were shredded and big holes in the seat… we live in a fairly rural spot…

What do you mean by build it up? Just unfold it? I definitely wouldn't leave it in the garden all night because I couldn't be bothered folding it.

If it's more than that, get a new buggy. Plenty of great doubles that will fit through doors or fold very easily

It doesn't bother me though. I like the pram set up, it needs to be a sturdy frame, my 2yo is 36lb and my 13 week baby is 21lb.
I have to remove each seat separately and then fold the frame side ways and then down. But again, it doesn't bother me at all. My DC are over the weight limit for ones that fit through the doors x

This was another worry of mine! I can't afford to replace the pram right now x

Off topic- have you considered a cat? When I lived in the city every one of my neighbours had rat/ mouse issues apart from us- I’m sure it was the cat that kept them away.

Yikes. Which city was this that everyone w/o a cat had issues with vermin?

Cats chase the garden birds though.

What ones have you looked at? I've had two five year olds happily in doubles that fit through doors, there's no way that your two year old and baby are bigger!

BrendaTheBlendeer · 01/07/2025 13:35

You do you if you're happy with the faff though.
