Pram left overnight in the garden!

Definetly not "end of the world" stuff, but I got quite angry about this.
We have a double buggy that doesn't fit through our front door so needs to be built up outside every time we want to go out, not an issue. Monday mornings are nursery run mornings, I need to get the 7:20am bus. DW always at work. We're both females.
She was sorting jobs out last night while I got the baby settled for sleep. She came upstairs and told me she had built the pram up and just left it in the garden! We have never done that before and I don't like the idea of it. She said it wasn't going to rain so didn't see the issue. Problem is we saw a rat in the garden last week and after speaking with the neighbours turns out that 3 doors down have a rat problem.
I didn't shout at her but I did irritably tell her to go and get the pram in the house because I didn't want rats touching it and she said I was being absolutely ridiculous.
So..
YABU - Leaving the pram outside (weather approving) clearly saves time.
YANBU - Rats carry diseases and its not safe to leave it out.
And would you leave a pram outside at all regardless of the rats?

God our pushchair lives outside unless we have the energy to put it in the car. No big deal. What would rats want with your pushchair unless you’re leaving food in it?

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 30/06/2025 08:27

Get a cover?

dancinfeet · 30/06/2025 08:28

my neighbours cat would 100% take a shit in it if it was left outside my house- so in that respect you are not being unreasonable to presume that any kind of animal could come into contact with the pram overnight.

gottakeeponmoving · 30/06/2025 08:29

You need to throw foxes, cats and slugs into the mix. Foxes and cats will piss all over it. And slugs .. 😱

I didn't think the rats would enjoy my sons slide but it did 😅

Why did you have to be irritable about it? It's not an outlandish thing to do in very dry weather. Couldn't you have just said you don't like the idea of it being out overnight without making her feel stupid about it?

Yeah we have a neighbour cat that comes and scratches at our doors (recently moved in and think the previous neighbour fed him).

You don’t want spiders rubbing their willies all over it.

I did, she said I was being ridiculous and rolled her eyes huffing at me which is when I then became irritable and told her to go and bring it inside or I would have to go and do it myself when the baby was asleep.

Couldn't you throw a cover or a blanket over it if you are worried?

I've left all sorts of shite outside this week - projects I'm working on in the garden. Wouldn't occur to me to worry about rats because it's not food!

Coffeeishot · 30/06/2025 08:33

It isn't great but its fine a wipe down of the seats and you are good to go surely ?

I don't know the size of your garden but can you get a plastic garden box to store the pram overnight it sounds a pain in the neck building it up every day.

Roselilly36 · 30/06/2025 08:33

Wouldn’t have dreamt of leaving the pram outside.

saraclara · 30/06/2025 08:34

I honestly don't see your issue. Massive overreaction on your part.

I normally wouldn't worry, but if there's an infestation only a few doors down they're curious animals and have clearly been in my garden despite the lack of food. My baby is only 3 months I didn't want to risk putting him in the pram if it had rat germs all over it. The chances are probably slim but why risk it ?

You're being unreasonable - but I'd be amazed if it were there in the morning after a week.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 30/06/2025 08:36

I always left ours outside.. absolute pain building it up everyday

Wipe it down till the cover you are going to order for it arrives

Poulterg · 30/06/2025 08:36

We wouldn't be able to leave a pram outside our house overnight because it would be nicked by the morning! (lots of warnings about them going missing outside community centres etc, local children's centres offer locks). I wouldn't be worried about rats, though we have a regular fox visitor but he only turns up on bin day. Tbh I always used a slimline P&T buggy we could store in the hall as the idea pf having to build up a buggy every morning would be a pain.

I didn't think the rats would enjoy my sons slide but it did 😅

We left ours out overnight by accident once. Didn’t occur to me that any animals or whatever would be interested, but I did wake up in the middle of the night worried that somebody would nick it.

More importantly, please tell me more about the rat enjoying your son’s slide. Did it slide down? Did it look like it enjoyed it? I must know.

Where do you live?!

UnderwoodsFinest · 30/06/2025 08:37

Building a pram everyday sounds like a right faff.
We had a double that I had to fold once it was in the hall and that was bad enough.
My neighbours left theirs out with the rain over on most days, it didn’t seem to be a problem for them although their parenting style wasn’t one you’d want to emulate so maybe not the best example.

pbdr · 30/06/2025 08:37

I mean, I personally wouldn’t leave a pram outside myself, but I also don’t think that it warrants you being unpleasant to each other over it. I would find it exhausting being in a relationship where we couldn’t have even a trivial disagreement without being irritable and snappy at each other. Relationships are much happier if you treat each other with patience, gentleness and kindness, even if you don’t agree with each other.

That's a bit of a reach when you don't know anything about the OP's garden, its security or the area she lives in.

It was trying to run up it 😅 I think it liked the little puddle of water collected at the bottom. I'm normally terrified of rats but I couldn't help but laugh at it! X
