Pram left overnight in the garden!

Definetly not "end of the world" stuff, but I got quite angry about this.
We have a double buggy that doesn't fit through our front door so needs to be built up outside every time we want to go out, not an issue. Monday mornings are nursery run mornings, I need to get the 7:20am bus. DW always at work. We're both females.
She was sorting jobs out last night while I got the baby settled for sleep. She came upstairs and told me she had built the pram up and just left it in the garden! We have never done that before and I don't like the idea of it. She said it wasn't going to rain so didn't see the issue. Problem is we saw a rat in the garden last week and after speaking with the neighbours turns out that 3 doors down have a rat problem.
I didn't shout at her but I did irritably tell her to go and get the pram in the house because I didn't want rats touching it and she said I was being absolutely ridiculous.
So..
YABU - Leaving the pram outside (weather approving) clearly saves time.
YANBU - Rats carry diseases and its not safe to leave it out.
And would you leave a pram outside at all regardless of the rats?

It's a double pram system. Both chairs have to be removed separately before you can fold the frame.

They have and we're also going to call too.
I'm not too worried about our stuff or our health. But I didn't want to put my 3 month old baby is something the rats had potentially crawled all over.

Oh that sounds like a PITA! I have 10 years between my kids so I avoided needing a double pram (though that age gap bring other challenges!).

The council will be on it quickly. I've had to call them out twice (live near a river, I like to feed the garden birds, I had a garden compost bin = rat heaven) and they take it seriously.

I also wouldn't want my very new baby anywhere near rats...I don't think you're being unreasonable.

Don't need to 🤷🏻‍♀️ we enjoy using public transport as a family or driving if need be. Not an issue. MNetters are obsessed with people driving 😅

Just get a cover / tarp for it? Save faffing in a morning and save space in yr house? Or one of those plastic sheds? They’re a bit expensive though I think.

RenovationNightmare · 30/06/2025 09:51

I'm confused. What exactly do you mean by 'built up', sorry if it's a silly question as I only have one child, so only have experience of one pram - bugaboo fox - are you just talking about the metal frame/wheels without the basket and bassenett or are you talking about all elements.
I must admit I've never left my frame outside, I'd probably end up wiping it down If I were you, but then I'm a first time mum so have a PFB and may be over the top!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 30/06/2025 09:52

mines outside all the time - it gets left out all day at nursery too in the buggy park, in the garden etc - ive left laundry out over night - paddlng pool and slide, toy house - i dont care about animals going on stuff tbh - everything is washable hahaha

Why are you so bothered about whether I drive or not or whether this displeases my partner 🤔 I'm not the most objective no, but pretty sure I know her better than you do? If she wanted me to learn to drive we would discuss it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sorry if someone has suggested this but it might be worth getting a tandem buggy where the seats are above each other rather than side by side. I found it much better for doors, gates, footpaths and the kids weren’t able to wind each other up (well it certainly made it a bit more difficult for them). We had an oyster max I think. It was also good with a buggy board for when my toddler wanted to stand up.

You have to remove both seats separately from the frame and then the frame collapses sideways kind of, and then folds up.

This is about rats 😅 nothing more or less haha. Just wondered peoples opinions on the rat/pram situation.

I don't need to drive but thank you, I have legs to walk and public transport is economically better surely 😊

Your baby is coming up to the age where infection is now less of a risk, but you are absolutely right to avoid exposing them to rat urine and other animal emissions. The pram should stay inside. Leaving it out overnight is not like leaving it outside a daytime activity. Nocturnal animals without interruption will contaminate it.

Doesn't sound like a stately home with 24 hour security patrols and a perimeter resembling Buckingham Palace, what with there being a door too narrow to get a double buggy through, neighbours a couple of doors down that opened their door to discuss seeing rats and the OP catctching a bus into work rather than waiting for her Driver to bring the Jag around.

My house isn't a stately home with security either and I get a bus to work and my front door is too narrow for a double buggy. But there is a lockable gate going to the back garden and nothing left out has ever been stolen from it.

funinthesun19 · 30/06/2025 09:59

People don’t like leaving their washing out overnight because it will get “darked on”. A pram can definitely get darked on too. Yanbu!

orangedream · 30/06/2025 10:01

It's odd that you would think to say you didn't shout at your wife.

What business is it if anyone else if OP can drive? Driving isn't compulsory although a lot of people on Mumsnet seem to be obsessed by it.
If more people decided not to drive the world wouldn't be so polluted!
And how do you know whether her wife wants her to drive ?
I don't drive, I never have, I don't expect anyone to give me lifts , although sometimes they offer and I accept.
My family and friends have never said that they think I should drive
It is a personal decision made for very good reasons.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/06/2025 10:04

Forget the pram, I’d be more irritated if I was your wife by your refusal to lean to drive. For no good reason, other than you don’t want to

RitaFires · 30/06/2025 10:07

My baby is a few weeks younger than yours and I definitely wouldn't leave my pram out in the garden overnight. In my garden one of the neighbour's cats would probably climb in, there would be slugs and snails and it would possibly be shat on by birds, all things I'd rather avoid.

Rosesanddaffs · 30/06/2025 10:08

I would never leave it outside even if there were no rats! You are not being unreasonable, it takes two minutes to bring it in xx

The cost of running 2 cars, the economy, pollution, only having 1 driveway, a very motion sickness toddler who manages better on bus and train. And even, "I don't want to", is a perfectly valid reason. I thought the whole point in life was freedom of choice 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don't your children ever go on swings, slides or other outdoor play equipmwnt , or even sit on the grass?

TheCurious0range · 30/06/2025 10:10

Could you get a small bike or bin store? That way you could leave it in there and you wouldn't have to keep building it every day
I think people saying cats would shit in it don't know cats very well, nap in it yes!

Where on earth are you all living that animals would be chewing and shitting on a pram overnight??

And cats pissing and shitting on prams? Seem extremely unlikely to me. Maybe in a sandpit left uncovered.

didgeridid · 30/06/2025 10:13

We have cats that come in our garden and spray stuff so we wouldn't leave ours outside.
Also people saying rats won't be interested they nibble the material for nests. So as well as weeing on it they will damage it too.

annzen · 30/06/2025 10:13

Cheap bike shed from Amazon, around 150qd. Tandem prams are great too.
