I’m probably being a prude but…

…what is the deal with teenage girls running around basically naked these days?

Last week, I was driving down the road near a secondary school at letting out time and I must have seen about 5 girls’ actual bum cheeks as they were leaving school. Like, we all rolled our skirts up fairly short at school, but this was actually full knickers and bums on display… one girl was wearing a thong so it was just her whole bum on show.

Then, I was on the beach today (we live near the sea) with my two primary school aged sons and there were a group of maybe 13-14 year old girls, they were very young, more than half of whom were in thong bikinis. They spent most of the time on the beach doing a photoshoot, predominantly photos of them from behind looking out to sea, presumably for social media?!

I know teenagers have always been teenagers, but I’m pretty sure underage girls weren’t wearing thong bikinis on the beach when I was that age 😳

I could see other families on the beach felt uncomfortable with it too.

Do their parents know? Is this just how teenagers dress these days?

If you think what you’re wearing stops you from being raped you’re the obtuse one. Men rape babies, children and old people. I don’t they are walking around in sexualised clothing. Never seen a 89 year old in in a short skirt with her arse out. Have you?

No I don’t think that at all. Having been a victim of SA whilst I was fully clothed walking down the street I know it happens anywhere. I don’t want men leering at my daughter and cat calling. Will it stop if she’s covered - no. Will it be minimised? Probably.

I suggest you google it and Mumsnet trolls as it wouldn’t let me post the explanation of it

I'm not a fan of seeing people's arses, nor sitting on seats or sunbeds after they have plonked them down on them

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 30/06/2025 07:52

@Username73638 the problem is they are not rolling them up! just take a look in shops like new look! the school skirts are actually just pelmets!! (to those who done know, a pelmet goes above a curtain to hide the hooks!) Sure I have had belts wider than that!

Yep...I agree nobody needs to see lumpy bums on show. My teenage son once expressed his embarrassment, when going up the stairs at school, he said you don't know where to look as all the girls have their bums out in your face....the school he went to they all wore thick black tights all year around so it was even that bad. Anyway he's all grown up now, and seemed to survive the ordeal unscathed Grin

Is it OK if they don’t have lumpy bums? Not everybody has.

Ah now there’s a thought I didn’t need on a Monday morning. Completely agree with you.

Also a great example to teach young boys not to give unwanted attention.

I'm more worried about grown up men tbh.

Which is my point that you teach them young.

This thread has something for everyone, the incel and their snow plough mommy. The grumpy middle aged woman who is eternally frustrated with her husband and kids and only one step away to lose it. The authoritarian christian trad wife preaching modesty as salvation while bitterly resenting anyone having fun. The repressed poster who was raised in a joyless household and who can’t quite admit she’s envious of the freedom she never had. And let's not forget the overly interested male sleaze balls who don't know where to look, poor munchkins. I don’t care much for this fashion myself, but the weekly MN threads that salivate over the chance to moralise about girls’ school skirts and bodies are very fucking weird.

ChocolateGanache · 30/06/2025 08:24

Well the adults have allowed our society to become pornified and objectified women for so long now, that this just seems normal to teens I’m afraid OP.
You are definitely not being unreasonable.
It’s heartbreaking and a clear sign that feminism is still needed more than ever.

What camp are you in?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/06/2025 22:37

You saw them actually leaving school premises in skirts that displayed their underwear, no tights? Extremely surprised that was accepted by school staff.

It's the same at our children's secondary school! At a friend's school they have made the decision to stop the easier to roll skirts and replaced with trousers from September.
It's the arse/knickers literally on display in school uniform which is just not OK.

VIOLETPUGH · 30/06/2025 08:36

I totally agree, my daughter is now in her 30;s and there is no way she would have been allowed to as much flesh as these kids do. What sort of parent allows this is beyond me.

Theseventhmagpie · 30/06/2025 08:36

Platypusdiver · 29/06/2025 22:33

I really don't like. I don't want to see anyone's arse. Seeing nearly a whole teenager's or just half a tradie's is too much.

Totally agree. It seems like civilisation is regressing.

WTF's a "snow plough mommy"?!

Your daughter more than likely rolled her own skirt up then unrolled before she got home. So a parent like you I guess.

Setyoufree · 30/06/2025 08:40

I'm just chuckling at the thought that you also rolled up your skirt at their age "but not that much" 😁😁 oh please.

LlynTegid · 30/06/2025 08:41

When you read the threads about swimwear with what the OPs usually call 'decent coverage' (normal in other words) and how little is available, the problem comes in part with the awful retail environment we have. Largely owned and run by older men I expect.

I'd advocate double VAT if I thought it would start to reduce sales of such clothing.

Swonderful · 30/06/2025 08:43

Sorry to say, but it's lazy schools. They now allow sports kits instead of uniform on PE days and all summer. My daughter has a pretty short skort but she tells me it's the longest in her class.

Why can't they wear uniform and change for PE?

Fetaface · 30/06/2025 08:43

blandana · 29/06/2025 22:51

We all have different boundaries. My personal one is that my daughter can wear a short skirt but no bum cheeks on display, for example. She’s a child and fact is there are some disgusting men who get off on seeing things like that. Not with my child. When she’s older, it’s her choice, but also her risk so I hope she keeps good boundaries. Nothing to do with prudishness! It’s just safety.

Safety? Does long fabric keep you safe?

Imagine thinking a sex offender/rapist is going to think ah shit man can't rape her coz she has a longer skirt on. Damn scuppered by some cotton!

🤣 A lot of pearl clutching going on and I think they have forgot what they were like at that age. My skirt was ridiculous. My parents had no idea that I would roll and unroll my skirt everyday for five years.

It's the fact that anyone in public has a smart phone snapping away then posting stuff on SM for all the world to see...fine if you give permission, but that will not always be possible.

Life is very different to years ago when everyone could dress how they wanted without everything being posted online.
