I’m probably being a prude but…

…what is the deal with teenage girls running around basically naked these days?

Last week, I was driving down the road near a secondary school at letting out time and I must have seen about 5 girls’ actual bum cheeks as they were leaving school. Like, we all rolled our skirts up fairly short at school, but this was actually full knickers and bums on display… one girl was wearing a thong so it was just her whole bum on show.

Then, I was on the beach today (we live near the sea) with my two primary school aged sons and there were a group of maybe 13-14 year old girls, they were very young, more than half of whom were in thong bikinis. They spent most of the time on the beach doing a photoshoot, predominantly photos of them from behind looking out to sea, presumably for social media?!

I know teenagers have always been teenagers, but I’m pretty sure underage girls weren’t wearing thong bikinis on the beach when I was that age 😳

I could see other families on the beach felt uncomfortable with it too.

Do their parents know? Is this just how teenagers dress these days?

Sorry to say, but it's lazy schools. They now allow sports kits instead of uniform on PE days and all summer. My daughter has a pretty short skort but she tells me it's the longest in her class.

Why can't they wear uniform and change for PE?

Time it takes to change, and avoiding any accusations from a child that another has been staring at them. Also avoids issues if a child claims to be trans or non-binary about where to change.

They are also sexual characteristics - develop at puberty, not directly involved in reproduction.
If you are talking about just the nipple (which would be pretty hard to regard independently to the breast on a female) then they also undergo changes at puberty.

Yes breasts develop as a tool to feed babies. They are not there as a toy for males. That is not the aim of breasts and nipples.

A male sexual characteristic is an adams apple and yet they are on show all the time. Why not tell them to cover up their secondary sexual characteristics? They are putting themselves at risk walking around with their adam's apple on show for all to see!

Like other posters, I'm in two minds about this. So, here's a question: imagine there's a man or women with a camera on the beach, taking photos of these girls (or boys). This could be a stranger or a parent, you don't know.

Is this:

(A) Not OK, obviously not innocent behaviour, report them to the authorities?
(B) A member of the public, taking photos in a public place, so it's totally legal?

Does this change anyone's mind?

B). Anyone can take photos in a public place unless it is invading their privacy etc. But you can't invade someone privacy if it is on display for anyone to see.

So you’re saying it makes no difference if girls are naked or clothed to the way they are viewed?

Of course clothes themselves don’t provide safety, I didn’t say that, but how you dress is one war of signalling your boundaries.

You see naked girls walking down the street? I never have.

If a rapist sees a girl naked he either removed her clothing or she was naked with him (a partner). Neither of which is encouraging rape.

A short skirt doesn't signal lack of boundaries or lesbians would be groping at these girls. Lesbians do not do that typically but males do. Nope males choose to behave as society allows them to. You are blaming the girls for being sexually assaulted instead of blaming the perpetrator. No wonder we have a major issue with sexual assaults these days if the victim is to blame.

Tell me what signal does a topless male signal? Come grope my nipples ladies? What signal does seeing a male with his arse crack hanging out fixing a roof say? Come stick a finger up my sphincter darling?

You are signalling it is ok to hurt these girls because you think they are less than other girls.

languedoc1 · 30/06/2025 11:16

Acceptance of this behaviour in very young teens is just inviting all kind of predators. Ignorant parents who checked out of upbringing - that's what it is.

arcticpandas · 30/06/2025 11:16

I hate thongs no matter who's wearing them; teen granny Brad Pitt whatever. Showing me (almost) your asshole makes me think you're an asshole.

lifeonmars100 · 30/06/2025 11:18

when I was young I used to wear such short skirts you could see my knickers when I ran, bent over or reached up for something. Then maxi dresses came in so of course I wore those, it is called fashion and it ruled me when I was in my teens and twenties. I had a neat little body so dressing it was easy, I knew I was attractive and enjoyed being young . It is a short time in life and soon passes.

Sorry, but you are talking about some ideal world where everybody has ultra-liberal ideas. The reality is a large % of the UK society doesn't have these ideas. So in real terms naked very young teens on the streets do encourage predators unfortunately. It's up to their parents to educate them of the others' sensibilities and the dangers of the real world.

Bilbo63 · 30/06/2025 11:22

I live in a seaside town and it’s bums everywhere at the moment! Not just reserved for the beach - but in the supermarket and on the high street. I worry they may hurt their bums if they tumble. The supermarkets are now requesting bottoms covered - shoes on and no topless men allowed in either. There is also a trend of the male youth walking around topless but with a back pack on - they are going to have weird tan lines

Tell me where young teens walk naked down the street. Absolute bull shit.

Even if someone was naked, that doesn't signal anything at all.

Sorry educate kids on how not to get raped? There is no way to prevent rape or sexual assault and to tell girls they are to blame and brought it on themselves if they get assaulted or raped is disgusting.

Maybe you need educating on how to support victims not perpetrators as you are currently on the side of the sex offender.

There is only one reason for rape and sexual assault and that is that the perpetrator chose to do it.

So who was to blame for me getting raped when I was naked? Me? Or the rapist?

TragicMadge · 30/06/2025 11:24

I see it as an extension of gen x's lack of parenting/living vicariously through their teens/befriending not being an adult.

Oh my god, they have bum cheeks!?!?!

Who'd have thought??

your sons have them too, they won't care unless YOU make a big deal of it.

if I still had a pert young bottom id probably let it see the sunshine in this weather too! Sadly it's an aging arse that no one needs (in public anyway) to see these days!?

you're only young once & id rather the girls had the confidence to do it than sat sweltering hiding themselves away! I know there's plenty of 'in between' but frankly I can't get bothered by a bit of flesh!

Ridiculous - they are CHILDREN, you don't see boys walking around with shorts up their arse, because boys aren't the 'Sex Class'. The fact that you celebrate minors taking this message on board is utterly grim. Confidence doesn't come from male validation.

I8toys · 30/06/2025 11:25

I had to adjust my eyes when a girl wearing a romper suit walked past. It was bum hungry and like wearing pyjamas outside. Don't they look in the mirror before leaving the house. Yes wear what you want blah blah blah but your flaps are exposed.

My daughters response to me suggesting she was showing “too much” was-

Body shaming
it’s a You problem, not a Me problem

until she actually Noticed a man blatantly staring at her boobs while we were on a train … she was horrified

Only then was she open enough to listen to me opine about what you wear at age 14 … and what many men see & think. Like that guy will go home and wank about the teen girl on the train with her boobs out. If you were more modestly dressed, he probably wouldn’t have noticed you.

What the fuck? Men leer at women are teenage girls regardless of how they dress. Teaching your daughter that the burden of staying protected from perverts rests in her wardrobe choices is very smelly.

Yes, they are for feeding babies but many women like them to be touched when having sex. If you Google it then there is an explanation of why this is.

I've never in my life seen a boy with shorts so short his arse is hanging out, let's not pretend its anywhere close to the same scale and use it as an excuse to continue to sexualise children.

I do see boys walking around with no tops on though. So why is that different?

I beg some of you learn to decipher between questioning whether fashion choices tailored to the male gaze are as empowering for women and teenage girls as we like to believe, and spouting rape apologist crap that what we wear is why we are targeted by predators .

You've never seen a boy with his waistband so low that his knickers are hanging out?

You've never seen a builder with his arse crack hanging out?

What did you think the phrase 'builders bum' related to?

I'm not the one sexualising children here. To me a thigh is part of a leg and the top is the same as the bottom.

If you reported them to the authorities nothing would happen as there is no expectation of privacy in public. If you expose your bum in public and someone takes a picture and plasters it all over the internet there is very little you can do to stop that.

Human females have permanent breasts. The most popular explanation for this is that they signal reproductive capability all year round rather than just during a breeding season. So yes they do have a sexual purpose. You can deny it u ti, you’re blue in the face.
