People who wrap up warm even in a heatwave

Whenever there’s a heatwave I always notice a few people dressed really warm. We were at an outdoor event on Saturday, it was very hot where we are and everyone was in shorts/t-shirts/dresses. There was a guy in jeans and a big hoodie. I don’t know how he coped.

I’ve even seen people in woolly hats and puffer coats.

Do some people just not get hot?

I'm the opposite end of the spectrum. Menopausal and always too hot! Even in winter, can't stand big heavy coats unless it's literally baltic outside, even then when I've been walking for a while, I need to unzip..

Destiny123 · 29/06/2025 22:21

My body has issues. I can be wandering round in the middle of winter in a t-shirt with the house and 15 degrees and be hot, or abroad in Spain in a heat wave and have goosebumps cold. Drives me mad there's no logic. I've been in a strappy dress all day then fluffy hoodie ontop in the evening

alexalisten · 29/06/2025 22:23

No they get hot their covering their bodies dont comment on it. I use to always cover my arms to cover self harm scars and hated it when every other person felt the need to comment on it and say arent you hot in that or take it off your making me hot

Unorganisedchaos2 · 29/06/2025 22:24

My MiL and SiL are like this (50's and 70's) its always so hot in their houses. When I visit MiL in the winter I'm greeted by slippers on the radiator and a hot cup of tea as a way to recover from the cold outside 😊

Interestingly DH isn't the same; I always grew up in a relatively cold house (we didnt have central hearing until my early teens) and so never felt the cold. After moving in together DH never complained of being cold even though we never really put the heating above 18-19 in the winter.

DD (6) seems to have inherited feeling the cold though, and when I got her an electric blanket for her bed last year she said it was "the best thing ever". 😅 This last week we had a portable aircon unit running upstairs and in the night she'd got an extra blanket out because she was cold - the temperate never dropped below 20! She also insists on wearing her cardigan /PE jumper to school even when its sweltering so I have to explain every time I drop her off

They may have immigrated from hotter countries and don’t find it all that hot

Same as Northerners who move to London and are always in shorts …

I’m a northerner in the north. I wear shorts from March to September 😁.

stoow · 29/06/2025 22:32

Shoplifters still wear the same clothes- hoodies tracksuit bottoms, a size bigger. As if shoplifted in shorts and T-shirts, they have less areas to stuff clothing with stolen goods.

Since being on antidepressants, I get more flustered with heat, especially humid weather. Never a problem abroad.

Dappy777 · 29/06/2025 22:33

It’s funny the way some people don’t seem to feel the heat. I love sun and blue sky, but man do I hate the heat. I hate it. Anything over 70 degrees is too hot for me. I’m in Essex, and we’re in for two days of heat and humidity. I’m dreading it. I get so irritable I could murder someone.

stoow · 29/06/2025 22:35

When we had a similar hot spell last year or year before, a lady collapsed in the shopping precinct wearing a thick woolly coat, woolly hat which covers the ears and thick tights.

If wore lighter clothing, I don’t think she would have collapsed

Summerevenimgchill · 29/06/2025 19:36

I’m so sorry to hear that.

i do hope that your dh gets well.

My thread isn’t intended to be mean so i hope I haven’t offended you.

I pray they can do something for this lovely person , hope they are cured

OpenThatWindow · 29/06/2025 22:36

My DH has vitiligo so he has to stay covered up 😔

TheTecknician · 29/06/2025 22:38

I think with some younger people, but particularly teens, there is a need to not conform with what many would consider to be season-appropriate clothing. Which is why the silly buggers wouldn't be seen dead wearing any kind of coat or jacket in the winter but break out the Arctic gear in summer. And complain about how cold they are (yes, I've heard one of them)!

Maybe the man doesn’t have many clothes.

In the last 2 days when we've had temperatures topping 30 degrees,I've seen a man in the high street wearing a padded jacket,a woolly hat and a scarf. I kid you not. I did wonder if he was doing it for a bet. And today I saw a woman in the local shop wearing a zipped up fleece covered by a rain jacket, with the hood up. There's me nearly melting wearing a thin cotton dress.

JohnTheRevelator · 29/06/2025 22:49

Incidentally, does anyone else on certain types of medication feel the heat more? I've always thought that my inability to cope with temperatures over 25 degrees meant there was something wrong with me,then a couple of days ago an article popped up on my news feed about certain medications making it harder to cool down in hot weather. Among them was a particular type of blood pressure tablet which I take.

CC222 · 29/06/2025 22:50

I sleep with a Sherpa thermal blanket even in this heat. It’s a comfort thing. I also wear clothes in the day that are far too hot, again a comfort/confidence thing. Each to their own. We all handle our situations how we see appropriate.

Edited

Yeah a lot of medications make it more difficult to tolerate heat

I think similar when I see people wearing flip flops in normal weather. I spend a fairly large percentage of my life feeling uncomfortable because I'm always so cold, especially my feet, and can't imagine wearing flip flops most of the time.

These heatwaves can be uncomfortable at times but mostly I rejoice not being freezing for a short period. Though personally I like to celebrate that by not having to wear wooly socks and a big jacket, for a change.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 29/06/2025 22:51

I lived in Spain years ago. I thought it was warm and wore short sleeves and no coat. The locals were in coats, hat and scarves.

Yet postmen wear shorts whatever the weather...

Jujujudo · 29/06/2025 22:54

If it’s not over 35 degrees I’m wearing my jumper, thank you very much.

Sonolanona · 29/06/2025 22:55

DS2 (adult) would, unsupervised be going out in 32 degrees heat in joggers, t shirt hoody and a coat... he is autistic and simply doesn't register temperature or discomfort. Once we get him in summer clothes he has the same difficulty going back into warm ones in autumn!
Having said that, I am still taking a hot water bottle to bed because it's what I do😄

EscapeToSuffolk · 29/06/2025 22:57

Autistic DS won't take his hoodie off. I'm similar with my dressing gown...I wear it all the time at home and when it's hot I wear it till it's unbearable and then take it off...then five minutes later put it back on...and so on all day!

DoAWheelie · 30/06/2025 01:08

When my late OH was on chemo he was always freezing. One summer I was in shorts and a t shirt and melting and he was still wearing his long Oodie with an extra hoodie on over the top of it; and still complained about the cold. It never really wore off even after the chemo ended. He only did 4 months but stayed freezing until he died 5 years later (from something unrelated).

JBJ · 30/06/2025 01:29

I never wear shorts outside because I’m fat and nobody needs to be subjected to my legs, but I’m the opposite and I’m always hot. I’m self conscious in winter when I’m out walking the dog in short sleeves or a light jacket and everyone else is in big winter coats and woolly hats!

I’m miserable at anything over about 20 degrees.

Filamumof9 · 30/06/2025 02:24

Some people are more used to the heat. I live in the Caribbean and wear long pants or long dresses. Most residents here do. Short pants are more for tourists. Furthermore, I sleep under a thick warm blanket, no airco. I find it chilly if the temperature goes below 28 Celsius. But when I lived in Europe, I was always cold. My son is similar, loves the heat as well.

stoow · 30/06/2025 06:37

Often see people wearing thick winter coats complaining that they are hot.

A little suggestion, take your coat off
