People who wrap up warm even in a heatwave

Summerevenimgchill · 29/06/2025 19:26

Whenever there’s a heatwave I always notice a few people dressed really warm. We were at an outdoor event on Saturday, it was very hot where we are and everyone was in shorts/t-shirts/dresses. There was a guy in jeans and a big hoodie. I don’t know how he coped.

I’ve even seen people in woolly hats and puffer coats.

Do some people just not get hot?

So what? None of your business

My thermostat has gone awry and I dont feel the heat, I feel cold most of the time, was at a gym spa thing (I was having a facial treatment so fully dressed), the bloody place was freezing and I was really uncomfortable. I get a lot of pain when Im cold.

In Winter I can barely move for all the layers Im in and Im still cold.

Sidebeforeself · 29/06/2025 20:07

I dont wear warm clothing but I do sleep under our winter duvet..with the windows closed!

HonoriaBulstrode · 29/06/2025 20:08

I was thinking this earlier when I walked by our local takeaway. There were about ten Deliveroo drivers all fully dressed up with biking gear and those heavy Deliveroo jackets - it couldn't be comfortable.

For bikers, it's for safety.

Couple of years or so back this would have been my DD due to anxiety. Delighted when today she went out in t shirt, shorts and sandals.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 29/06/2025 20:09

I think for some it's habit or insecurity.
I like to be covered up, so I always wear loose trousers, a long dress and boots, even in summer. The irony is that I hate heat and I really struggle in the warmer months. If I wore something suitably summery and lightweight, I'd feel too exposed.
I have social anxiety.

I sleep in a thick winter duvet. Hate being cold! It's my worst nightmare.

Divastrout · 29/06/2025 20:14

I always cover up with a throw on the sofa and sometimes even have a hot water bottle like now.
I am not ill,I don't even think I am cold sometimes. I just find it comforting especially after a long stressful day at work.

MaryGreenhill · 29/06/2025 20:14

The very frail and elderly

nomas · 29/06/2025 20:15

I get amazed at this as well, I saw a man in a wool coat in the midday heat today. I I know tourists from hotter countries often wear layers in our heat as they’re used to it being hotter.

My mum sleeps in a 15tog duvet in this heat! She has Reynauds but it still shocks as me I just sleep in a sheet.

Opedea · 29/06/2025 20:15

I wear long sleeves and long trousers during a heatwave. I like to cover up against sunburn to avoid the hassle of applying sun cream, and it covers lots of scars. I do get hot and wouldn't be wearing a coat, but I prefer feeling a bit hot compared to sun damaged skin.

lazyarse123 · 29/06/2025 20:17

My dd always wears a thin cardigan because she has fat arms and hates them. She will wear a summer dress with sleeves. I have wanted to tell her it doesn't matter and her arms will still be the same size but covered, but I can't find a nice way to say it so have settled on buying her two dresses with sleeves. She is an adult and has lost nearly five stone but still has a way to go.
I am also big but am happy to be sleeveless so long as my legs are covered which is easy to do in summer.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 29/06/2025 20:20

DS is always wearing long sleeves long pants in this weather, and always has a boiling hot shower to the point where we can’t use the bathroom straight after because of the heat. “Should I bring a jumper?” Dude, it’s 30° out! We’ve told him time and time again “wear shorts. Turn the temperature down a little” but it goes in one ear and out of the other. He is being assessed for autism and this was one of the questions we were asked at an appointment so I’d assume it could be an autistic trait?

TicTac80 · 29/06/2025 20:22

I have Raynaud's (which is painful!) so I have to be careful not to get cold...and also from the ME originally, so I feel really cold if the temperature is under 20degrees. I did wear shorts and a t-shirt today, but took a hoodie with me in case it got overcast or breezy.

user1476613140 · 29/06/2025 20:23

I have a thyroid disorder so I attribute all my freak behaviour on that. Love being wrapped up and cosy.

LunaLina · 29/06/2025 20:28

Each individual feels temperature differently to the next person. Not that surprising is it.

TheTecknician · 29/06/2025 20:37

I concur that the need to be wrapped and layered can be an autism thing. It's something I've heard about before.

My now-deceased neighbour in the flat downstairs used to complain about feeling "chilled" on very warm days. Meanwhile his front room windows would be shut and sometimes the gas fire would be on! I tried to suggest opening the windows to let the warm outside air flood in. Forget it!

Frenzi · 29/06/2025 20:42

My colleague who I share an office with is like this. At the highest temperatures she has on her cardigan, work blouse and a vest. I am in my short sleeved work blouse.

The battle to have the air conditioning on is real.

Its now got to the point where it is so bad I am looking for a different job as I feel ill every day in this heat.

ThePoshUns · 29/06/2025 20:43

I’m sun burnt in shirts just saw a woman in opaque tights and knee length boots with a long sleeve , knee length dress on.

Jellycatspyjamas · 29/06/2025 20:44

My DD will wear layers in hot weather, for her it’s a sensory thing related to autism.

FancyCatSlave · 29/06/2025 20:44

My husband (almost ex but that’s not relevant), sleeps under a 15t duvet plus blanket all year round regardless of the temperature. He takes his duvet on holiday if at all possible (we usually drive to Europe).

I can’t fathom it at all. But he says he’s cold otherwise!

Blondiney · 29/06/2025 20:47

If I have an eczema flare I cover.

LlynTegid · 29/06/2025 20:51

I wonder if for some people it is medical reasons or to cover up say a scar. It could also be if they are out for a very long day, catering for the lowest temperature.
