Nadiya Hussain responds to critics

I can understand her being upset that her shows have been axed, apparently ratings were falling, However, I find it hugely disappointing that she has brought race/religion into it. No one is entitled to a BBC show and I think she has had a bloody good run. AIBU?

Just continuing to demonstrate the point.

It would be helpful if you actually made a point. Any point. Instead of sniping from the sidelines.

Lazytiger · 30/06/2025 11:51

Tandora · 30/06/2025 09:43

You are totally missing the point.

She did NOT moan, whinge or complain about losing her show. She thanked people for being "on the journey" with her, said she was reflecting at what's next and suggested some new projects in the pipeline.

This video is a very thoughtful response to the tons of people sending her messages saying she has to be GRATEFUL in response to having her show axed.

She's not "playing the diversity card". What card? "Chip on her shoulder"? This is racism. She's reflecting on her experiences as a brown, immigrant woman which she is perfectly entitled to do; in fact as a public figure it's important she does.

Her video was extremely educational. I suggest you watch it and reflect.

"She's not "playing the diversity card". What card? "Chip on her shoulder"? This is racism."
No it is not racism. Racism is the card she is playing, that is the chip she has.

Racism is the card she is paying, that is the chip she has.

.......!!! Wtaf.

She's racist - that's the "chip she has"??? Because... she's a brown, immigrant woman very daring to talk about her experience as a brown, immigrant woman??

And that's not allowed, because it offends you..... because......?

She’s not an immigrant. She’s British.
She was born in Luton.

It’s always been the deal with TV work that they pick you up, over-expose you to get the most out of you then drop you for the Next Big Thing. While you’re riding high they pay you telephone numbers and then it stops and it’s up to you to plan for that moment - usually by gracefully accepting the situation and taking less prestigious or high-profile work.

This has always been how it is. How has Nadiya managed to miss the memo?

Zov · 30/06/2025 12:08

saveforthat · 30/06/2025 09:47

Yes, the Hairy Bikers started about 20 years ago. The BBC were still picking presenters for ability then, rather than if they ticked a box.

Yep this. ^ 100%.

I think NH had opportunities as anyone else did. It wasn’t a closed door but an open one.

At the end of a long run everyone gets a thank you and bye. It’s harsh but not personal. How someone takes it will differ. I bet nearly everyone feels crest fallen but it’s look to other opportunities time.

Yes this exactly. When one door closes, another one opens. No need for her to be sour about her stint at the BBC finishing. She needs to get over it, stop blaming everyone but herself, accept the fact that her show was boring and had low viewing figures, and move on!

If she keeps on moaning, she will really struggle to find any more work, as people won't want to touch her, because they'll be afraid of being called racist if they employ her and then want to get rid of her because her show (or her slot in someone else's show) is not popular.

Yes exactly. It’s tough but clearly people are keen due to the high pay and they get to do what they enjoy.

Yep this. ^ 100%.

But they also picked them as they were 2 middle aged men so the commissioners were likely thinking how can we improve our ratings with the male demographic? Cooking shows were probably a bit aimed towards the older female (delia) or the younger crowd (Jamie O). When those 2 came on the radar of the channel they thought great - 2 easy going blokes doing the food that would appeal to easy going blokes and they also are on bikes so we can get them touring.

Yes thank you I should have written second generation immigrant or from an immigrant background. She was talking about her experience as a person from an immigrant background - how she's always supposed to be grateful, just for the simple fact of even being here.

You probably shouldn’t have mentioned it at all because she’s British. She understands British culture and her ethnicity has no bearing on that. 😊

If you look at her videos you’ll see what prompted the posts she seems to be focusing on.

It was that she hadn’t been supported. A ten year career is opportunity though.

ZoeCM · 30/06/2025 12:31

Does Nadiya even need a platform like the BBC anymore? I'm not saying she has no right to be disappointed that her show wasn't renewed - it's human nature. But doesn't this mean she's now free to monetise her recipes on YouTube, Instagram, etc.? Wouldn't easily searchable three-minute videos be more profitable for a lifestyle brand than a half-hour BBC show? You get all those influencers who have never appeared on traditional TV once but have made millions of pounds via TikTok and so on.

Errrrr. For the very last time - yes she understands British culture as she is British. You are the only person bringing 'culture' into this conversation - entirely of your own accord, with no prompting from anyone else.

Nadiya was talking about her experiences as a person from an immigrant background - how she's expected to always express gratitude for everything she has in life, even the simple fact of just being here, because of her immigrant background. That is what her video was about - have you even watched it?? Please watch it. Please educate yourself. It's really important to be sensitive about these issues because they massively affect people.

Could you link the video you mean? As I looked and couldn't find any. All the latest seemed to be about Palestine?

I won't link incase it brings up my IG in some way but go to 5th June video. She has a mauve top on and it's towards the end where she says I wasn't supported and it was hard.

I was interested in where the grateful comments appeared and looking at the comments under that post it could be it.

The more recent video that has made the press could be in response to those comments.

Culturally, we don’t like complainers. “Are you alright?” Is a greeting rather than a question that requires a long winded response about their current situation. Especially rich people complaining. We don’t like it when people show off either.

We expect people to remain aware and grateful of their opportunities and remain humble.

That’s just how we culturally are.

It’s exactly why so many contestants booted off reality shows or competitions make a point of saying how grateful they are for the opportunity.

Because we expect it… of EVERYONE.

On Instagram you can limit comments etc. I follow loads of accounts and often the comments are turned off or limited.

PruthePrune · 30/06/2025 15:21

@Lalaloope

I stand by my original comment. Anyone, whatever their background, who has had 10 years of shows on the BBC should be grateful. The chances of achieving the success Nadiya has are infinitesimal. TV is a fickle business and Nadiya should realise this, ultimately, it's all about ratings. Also, don't make assumptions about me.
