Nadiya Hussain responds to critics

I can understand her being upset that her shows have been axed, apparently ratings were falling, However, I find it hugely disappointing that she has brought race/religion into it. No one is entitled to a BBC show and I think she has had a bloody good run. AIBU?

Nadiya Hussain says she ‘won’t be grateful’ following BBC cooking show axe

What about if a British-born white male Bake Off winner had a 10 year career at the BBC, moaned about it ending and didn't like comments that he should be grateful for a decade of work opportunities? How could he blame it on race? Because “be grateful” comments would be equally valid directed at both.

He could certainly blame it on being a straight, white, middle aged man being made to move over and make space for people who are none of the above, and he'd not get an ounce of sympathy for it. He'd be told that the days of white male privilege and being first in line for every good job are over and he should come to terms with it and be less entitled and whiny.

Extravirginolive · 29/06/2025 20:40

What a lovely future "Brits" have together.

Fucking hell. Literally that's what it is already. Hell.

Get out while you can and leave them all to it.

saveforthat · 29/06/2025 20:44

Yes and I doubt if a white male would have got the job with the BBC in the first place. Nadiya was a worthy bake off winner but I didn't rate any of her cookery programmes. I think the BBC were falling over themselves to use presenters who were not white. Nowadays it's it's transpeople, they will probably replace her with a trans chef.

You are right of course, she can be as angry and outspoken as she likes on whatever topic she likes. But she should understand that there may be a heavy price to pay for that. To indulge that side of herself so publicly will almost certainly set her career back a few pegs and knock her popularity.

She's been emboldened by a fabulous career in TV that was constructed very suddenly, but like a house of cards it can be destroyed just as suddenly. She's going to need to stay likeable, relatable and anodyne unless she's prepared to risk it all. People want to be entertained by people who work in light entertainment not hectored by them or preached to by them. We want escapism and a distraction from a troubled world and our everyday worries. We get enough hectoring and preaching and lecturing from journalists and politicians.

Gary Lineker is finding out the same thing, except that Gary Lineker, much like JK Rowling can afford to put two fingers up at anyone who thinks they should just shut up and stick to their day job. It doesn't matter financially to either GL or JKR if they never work again. NH on the other hand, would be a fool to think she can afford the same luxury.

This is silly. She has stayed ‘likeable and relatable’. Her show was cut nonetheless. She’s responding to other people’s responses after the event. Her show wasn’t cut because she strayed from anodyne and exhibited anger and ‘ingratitude’. God help you, if you find a person of colour pointing out the loaded meanings of ‘gratitude’ ‘hectoring’, then we’re back with the minstrel shows.

Aren’t there some other factors here? Actually she wasn’t outspoken on Gaza for a long long long time when many other Muslims in public life were at some professional cost. I have seen many people calling her out on it.

She then did a cookbook on Ramadan and began to speak up about Gaza (maybe she had had enough of toeing the line) and it’s interesting that she lost followers and opportunities after that.

As an Asian person btw I found her recipes quite meh. Her baking was great, her cooking less so.

She has also said that 'I will be mindful of the brands I work with especially those who support genocide'. Her recent Instagrams have links to pro Palestine sites. It's her choice if she wants to voice her opinions but to some people, it's a turn off. I don't want to be lectured by light entertainment celebrities

Perhaps, now she's 40, she wants to move in a different direction. The recent statements where she addressed the loss of followers after her Ramadan cookbook and 'Grateful Gate' posts do come across as miffed and bitter.

She may not like it but Bake Off gave her a springboard into the BBC spotlight. Yes her personality/likeability won her a lucrative and successful 10 year career with TV shows (I have watched), multiple book deals (I own one of them) Remember, she baked for the Queen, she got an MBE and did Dessert Island Discs, she's even got a spice and sauce range.

TV chefs go in and out of fashion - she'll be welcome on Saturday Morning Kitchen, This Morning and The Food Network. It's not racism, it's light entertainment

@Tandora and @Wilfulignoranceabounds

Is it your assertion that British people should never tell a non-white British person to be grateful for their opportunities which have enabled them to become millionaires? Would that be your preferred solution?

But we are still allowed to say it to white- British millionaires?

The fact that you are asking this question clearly signifies that you are no closer to understanding what Nadiya was talking about. It also signifies to me that you’re either not interested in understanding or genuinely incapable of doing so. Either way, I’m not wasting my time. It seems to me that you’re more interested in being right than you are in learning a different perspective, so I’ll leave you to it.

Why criticise someone for asking a question, not answer it and instead give a word salad as an answer?

I couldn’t believe how unhealthy her recipes were. I’m actually really surprised at how much air time she got.

She does seem like a lovely person. I think fame has been a bit much for her as she seems shy and anxious. I think her BBC career has probably been a double edged sword.

Seriously though, there's no such thing as a "Brit" other than a word on a passport.

People whose family history goes back thousands of years on this land have exactly the same status as a "Brit" as millions of people from a huge number of countries around the world who acquired the "Brit" passport in the last few decades.

So what exactly does she want to be accepted as?

The millions of people that came here to acquire "Brit" passport status have created a "Brit" thing that exists entirely separate from this land.

It's only a concept now.

"Brit" has no actual meaning at all. So she wants acceptance as a "Brit"?

By whom exactly? You have a lot of nationalities to ask that question of.

Because of the numbers arriving here is she actually asking for acceptance from any particular cohort?
She should equally be asking for acceptance from the millions of nationalities with "Brit" passports.

"Brit" isn't a white people thing. The people that arrived have made "Brit" mean absolutely anyone from anywhere.

Awww are you stamping your feet because "Brit" isn't special any more? It's a shame because your ancestors were so very keen to spread the "Brit" love....

This is exactly it. This is why people are sending her messages saying she should be grateful. Because they don’t think she deserved any of the opportunities she had in the first place. Because she’s brown.

This is what she was saying in the video- her whole life people have been telling her she needs to feel grateful for everything that she has- just for being here- because she’s brown, she’s an immigrant, she never had a right to be here in the first place- just like she never really earned that TV job ! Right ?

But actually she’s allowed to have the full range of human emotions - like any one else- including sadness , disappointment, anger, bitterness. She doesn’t always have to be grateful. Just because she’s brown.

inamarina · 30/06/2025 07:46

Tandora · 29/06/2025 20:17

someone from an “immigrant family” might not be fully aware of the cultural context that the thing said has?

Sorry, can you please explain to me why you think a British person, who was born and raised in Britain, might not be aware of the “cultural context” in Britain?

I‘m not pp, but coming from an immigrant family myself and having been raised in our host country, I realise that my experience and understanding of said country and its culture might not be the same as the experiences of those people whose families lived there for generations.
Moving to a different country and even getting the citizenship doesn’t automatically mean that people fully immerse themselves into the new culture.
Some do, some prefer to stay within their own ethnic group.
No idea whether or not that’s the case with Nadiya, just saying that being born and raised somewhere doesn’t always mean one can’t be unaware of certain cultural aspects.

Lets compare her to... Scarlett Moffet shall we. Plucked off Googlebox. Offered a place on I'm a Celeb. Wins. Get a gig on Ant and Dec Saturday show and the I'm a celeb after show. She was an average presenter and it fizzled out. She bounced around doing her own TV shows and now we only see her when she pops up on game shows or is sat on a toilet advertisings tampons. Yet you never hear her saying 'oh it's not fair, I was given a huge opportunity and lots of support but I'm not getting the jobs anymore and people are saying I should be grateful and I know they are only saying that because I'm female/northern/fat'. She is grateful however. Grateful because she was given such an huge opportunity that other people on gogglebox never got. She can still make a living out of it and has amassed more wealth than she probably ever imagined. (nice house etc) and had some amazing experiences money can't buy (I remember her being invited to Jonathan Ross' Halloween party) that she probably ever imagined. She is getting on with it. Taking it on the chin. Accepting what she can get and not giving up and moaning.
It was the same with Nadia, but rather than being grateful that the BBC saw something in her and gave a huge chance, that others on the Bake Off didn't get, she is moaning because - after 10 years of making lots of money and having a huge profile - she is still churning out the same weird recipes and no-one is interested in watching her, so the BBC have moved on without her.
She should be grateful because she was a nobody who got a huge opportunity. Not because of the colour of her skin, her gender, her religion or what is on her birth certificate. That she is making it about anything that shows she has a massive chip on her shoulder.
For all those saying 'well if you don't understand what she is staying, that's your problem'. No it isn't. It is her problem. She needs to stop playing the diversity card and admit to herself she's had a massive leg up and a good run. If she wants more she needs to put the work in herself rather than expecting a large corporation to do it all for her.

100 million per cent this. ^ Exactly what I was saying earlier, but I used Steph McGovern as an example. She didn't moan and whinge either when her show was pulled, and like Scarlett, she just got on with things, and didn't blame everyone but herself when she got less TV work.

Jobs in the media are incredibly unstable and unreliable, and most people are out of work at any given time in that profession. I don't know why Nadiya thinks she should be any different, and why she thinks she is special and above everyone else who gets their shows or their 'slots' pulled.

She is coming across as inredibly ungrateful and entitled.
