To say this weather is causing me to become depressed

I know it sounds like I’m some sort of misery reveller, after all long hot days are supposed to be what we all love, but I’m really, genuinely struggling.

I haven’t slept well for weeks due to the heat and neither have the children. Late nights and early wake ups. Stuffy bedrooms even with fans circulating,

During the day it’s so hot. When in work I feel like I’m slowly melting in stuffy classrooms with kids whining endlessly about water bottles and crackling ice. On my days off (I’m part time) it’s often overwhelming, especially in the middle of the day. Constantly worrying about the children burning - one insisted on standing outside yesterday just for the hell of it with no hat or sun cream and had to be dragged in forcefully. Everyone’s just irritable with one another, the car is like an oven when you get in it, flies, fucking FLIES.

And there’s this low level pressure to be out enjoying it. One of our soft play centres has actually put out an appeal just begging people to attend because the hot weather means it’s been empty for weeks.

I want autumn now. I want coolness and leaves turning and rain.

We have always had spells of hot weather, especially in the South. Look up the summer of 1976 for one, and the summers of the early 1990’s, too.

Climate change is real, and pretending nothing has changed is climate denial.

There have always been summers hotter than the average. The point is the average is rising.

What was it?! I didn't see the comment.

It just said ‘cunt.’ I don’t care about it but I was baffled as to why someone was crying with laughter over it - it’s not exactly the height of wit.

@verycloakanddaggers

but we always have had warm weather though. I remember lots of warm days in summer when I was a kid in the 90s.

Yes, but we are very clearly having more, and longer, heatwaves. Multiple periods of several days where the temperature stays above 30 is not normal for the UK (or it didn’t used to be). I don’t know why people are so invested in pretending climate change isn’t happening.

In response to the OP - I’m right there with you. I’m in London and it’s unbearable at the moment.

I think it’s just cos it was so random

Cherrytree86 · 29/06/2025 09:40

It’s infinitely better than it being cold and raining and dark and 5pm - now THAT is depressing!!

verycloakanddaggers · 29/06/2025 09:44

I understand the tiredness, but I think you're choosing the wrong activities.

we came in from a day at a national trust place; everyone is boiling hot, thirsty and the sun is burning down.

Don't go for big days out when it's hot. Why are you doing that to yourself?!

Put the kids in a tepid bath with loads of bubbles while you sit on a stool.

Have a carpet picnic with a fan on.

Set up some shade in the garden and get some water play out there.

Set up some basic drawing in the coolest room in your house.

Watch a film with ice lollies.

You can go to the park at 9am or 5pm if they need a run.

So I’m not lacking a sense of humour but why? It’s just abusive; it’s not witty or anything. Anyway …

We are predicted 33 degrees tomorrow, it’s a lot. I’d probably be fine with the lovely weather if I could have long day time naps and then relax in the garden in the beautiful summer evenings but my life just doesn’t look like that if you see what I mean. So I am struggling.

Sorry I know it isn’t funny and it was incredibly rude but just wasn’t expecting to read it as a reply to a perfectly reasonable post so it caught me off guard and made me laugh!

Did you do GCSE or O Level science? If you did you'll have enough scientific understanding to understand what is meant when people refer to 'climate change'.

Average temperatures have risen. It's pretty easy to understand.

If you're a climate change denier, no one will change your mind. If you're not, just read a basic article on the BBC bitesize pages which will explain.

FancyCatSlave · 29/06/2025 09:49

I am so very grateful to live in a thatch at the moment, beautifully cool in here and we are loving the weather as when it gets too much we can retreat inside.

I am dreading going back to a crappy modern house. Sigh.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 29/06/2025 09:50

We feel the same way.
Tired, depressed and bored.

My husband has hayfever, I have asthma, we both struggle through May, June & July. We're in the north west, but it's still too warm. Although yes, very thankful not to be in the south east.
We have a big hairy dog that we can't walk properly currently, because she struggles with heat. We can't eat or sleep. We want the windows open, but flies, bees and wasps come in during the day, then there's barbecue and garden fire pit smoke in the evenings. Noise is amplified; footballs, radios, speeding vehicles, which exacerbates my anxiety.

We long for autumn walks and the quietness of winter. It's the same for us every year, we just aren't summer people.

UnintentionalArcher · 29/06/2025 09:50

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 29/06/2025 06:56

Might I suggest moving to Scotland? We've had maybe one or two days at a time in the low 20s and then it's back to 18 degrees and raining. I couldn't cope with anything else!

I second that. We’ve had a max of 24 degrees but nothing really ‘melty’ and lots of breezy days. The downside is that the winter storms are often more frequent/worse, but I love the summers!

@verycloakanddaggers

im not a climate change denier, I’m just not gonna get my knickers in a twist over a few warm sunny
days…in summer.
I’m gonna enjoy them! 😎 I hate the cold and wet and dark

Greenartywitch · 29/06/2025 09:58

I used to live in London and hot summer there were hard to cope with with the boiling tube, no garden and people playing loud music at all hours when I tried to keep the windows open...I hated it.

One of the many reasons why I moved back to the seaside 3 years ago. It makes things more bearable because we always get a sea breeze and we can cool off by the sea and swim when it gets really hot.

My point is your location plays a bit part. With climate change the heat is going to be a recurring issue in our Springs and Summers so if you are struggling that much you might consider moving to another part of the UK to cope better.

I lived in the South of France as well when I was a child/teen and mid-30s temperatures in the summer were common place so I go some resistance to the heat as a result but I know I could no longer cope with the 40s temperatures they are getting there now...

I wasn't aware anyone was asking you to get anything in a twist.

Have a nice day.

WaltzingWaters · 29/06/2025 10:01

In my opinion YAB massively U. But I LOVE the heat. And my toddler has been sleeping fine still. But of course you’re not really being unreasonable to feel that way!

GoneGirl12345 · 29/06/2025 10:03

allofusare · 29/06/2025 09:26

I have a lot on which does feel harder to manage in the heat ! Nothing especially bad. I am tired though. I had multiple wake ups from dc2 Friday night to the point where I didn’t actually get to sleep between them so I only actually went to sleep at 3. Then she woke at 6. I’m definitely feeling it still!

Get some fans or an AC unit as others have suggested. Keep curtains closed during the day so house stays cool.

Get decent sunscreen that lasts 12 hours so you don't need to worry about reapplying for the kids.

They will come indoors and get a drink when they need it. Get a paddling pool out.

Does your partner not help with night time (sorry if you said you're a single mum and I missed that)?

It is hotter than usual but there are lots of ways of mitigating it.

PluckyChancer · 29/06/2025 10:19

YABU because it’s not remotely hot where I live and it feels like Autumn. (south of Ireland)

We’ve had rain for the last two weeks and today is grey and drizzly with a high of about 17°c. I’m desperate to cut the grass as it’s so long but until it dries up for long enough, I’m stymied.

😭

Is this the first summer you've experienced or something?!

It's well know that June, July and August are our hottest months of the year. Most people can cope without making such a big deal over it.

Besides, the amount of hot weather we have lasts for far shorter than the months of where it's chucking it down with rain, dark, miserable, and there's a constant risk of slipping on ice whenever you set foot outside.

No wonder it got deleted. Absolutely unnecessary language to be used. Definitely not witty. Thanks for explaining. I am always late to the party.

LlynTegid · 29/06/2025 10:30

Night time temperatures are the issue for me. Don't mind hot days, can manage with them.

It's a shame we can't all have something in the middle. A nice dry 23-24 degrees all over. It's raining quite heavily here now and I've got the flipping tumble drier going 🙄

Hallywally · 29/06/2025 11:04

It’s been really mixed recently in my north west town- a lot of rain, some heat, bit of sun.

permanentdamage · 29/06/2025 11:08

I'm up north and coastal, its cooler here but the humidity last week was unreal, like 80-90% according to met office. It felt really oppressive!

4pmwinetimebebeh · 29/06/2025 11:10

It’s literally been a few weeks of summer weather get a grip!
