To say this weather is causing me to become depressed

I know it sounds like I’m some sort of misery reveller, after all long hot days are supposed to be what we all love, but I’m really, genuinely struggling.

I haven’t slept well for weeks due to the heat and neither have the children. Late nights and early wake ups. Stuffy bedrooms even with fans circulating,

During the day it’s so hot. When in work I feel like I’m slowly melting in stuffy classrooms with kids whining endlessly about water bottles and crackling ice. On my days off (I’m part time) it’s often overwhelming, especially in the middle of the day. Constantly worrying about the children burning - one insisted on standing outside yesterday just for the hell of it with no hat or sun cream and had to be dragged in forcefully. Everyone’s just irritable with one another, the car is like an oven when you get in it, flies, fucking FLIES.

And there’s this low level pressure to be out enjoying it. One of our soft play centres has actually put out an appeal just begging people to attend because the hot weather means it’s been empty for weeks.

I want autumn now. I want coolness and leaves turning and rain.

It is unbearably hot and with 33 forecast for Monday/Tuesday.

Are you maximising the coolness of your House @allofusare. Are you keeping curtains and windows closed during the day and opening them in the late evening to let in the cool air? It does help.

I'm planning to start gardening at about 8.15 to get in a couple of hours before it heats up.

I would prefer it this way than dark and icy and like sitting in the garden until 11pm but have grown up children and can pace. I can avoid some of it by wfh but not tomorrow and am dreading it. It must be difficult for you with the children in your class.

When ours were little, I used to multi-task - water them and the garden at the same time. They loved it - once or twice I gave them soap and it did as bathtime.

chatgptsbestmate · 29/06/2025 07:29

You're not wrong to hate the heat. I hate it too. Anything above 25 C IN THE SUN (so 20 C ish in the shade) is unbearable for me

Also my house (all houses?) suck up the heat and are HOT for days after the heatwave has passed

And I lived in Australia for a while. 25 C here is like 40C in Adelaide (imo)

Last year was shit but at least part of the problem is that I suspect by the time the schools break up it will be distinctly autumnal!

Another reason to move to Scotland, they’ve broken up!

Pyramyth · 29/06/2025 07:31

I'm enjoying it but agree it's not easy to teach in the heat. I think we're at tbe stage of having had enough warm summers that something needs to be done about overly warm classrooms. It definitely affects children's progress as no one is working at their best.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/06/2025 07:32

At night, put your fans on the windowsills in front of open windows. I’ve not had a sleepless night so far this year. I’ve even gone back under the covers because it’s got a little chilly.

That really works?

TheNuthatch · 29/06/2025 07:38

I used to adore the heat, until I hit 40. I don't mind it when Im off work, but like you its a struggle on weekdays. It hasn't been hot for a few weeks where I live, but it is ramping up again now.
I would highly recommend a portable air conditioner if you can find the money. We have one in the bedroom and it's brilliant. They had some in Lidl for around £150 recently. That would at least help you sleep. Everything is harder when you're permanently tired.

Dangermoo · 29/06/2025 07:40

I find the older you get, you tend to become less tolerant to the sun. There's also the threat of skin cancer, that's always on my mind.

Agree with this. I'm not a teacher but I dont understand why we dont put air con in schools. My dc went to a new build secondary school which was all glass fronted and they didn't fit air con.

greengreyblue · 29/06/2025 07:42

It’s not nice to feel that way. Do you have a garden? How old are your kids? Are you able to set up some water play for them? You sound overly anxious- they will be ok outside for 10 minutes without sun cream. Forcefully dragging them in sounds like you are being overly dramatic. Try to go at a slower pace , lots of cold drinks and ice lollies from the supermarket. Get the hose out . Put your feet in a bucket and chill.

I’m in primary school and it’s super hot. Air con costs money and our budget is stretched so there is your answer. Barely enough money to repair the leaky roof!

greengreyblue · 29/06/2025 07:48

I open the doors wide first thing in the morning to get the cooler air inside. It’s currently cloudy and cool here in central England and I’m enjoying my coffee outside.

RareMaker · 29/06/2025 07:50

I've suffered with summer SAD since I was a child
I just about manage it now with aircon and a paddling pool.

Well you have 98% of the year. You can deal with a handful of weeks being not your ideal weather.

Looks like someone else is struggling with the warmth!
Go suck on an ice cube!

FloofyBird · 29/06/2025 08:10

It's 29 degrees upstairs in our house it's miserable to sleep in.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/06/2025 08:12

Dangermoo · 29/06/2025 07:37

Yep! My bedroom is currently a cool and breezy 16 degrees.

Move to south wales, the weathers shite here!

We’ve just come on holiday here and it’s raining this morning :). This is absolutely the solution (it’s very beautiful!).

Lovely - will have to try that. For some reason, I thought the open window would negate the fan's effectiveness. Thanks for the tip!

Temporaryname158 · 29/06/2025 08:17

Honestly you are making a drama of this. Clinking ice in the drinks, a child shock horror who stood for a few minutes in the sun.

your perspective seems very out on this matter.

buy an air con unit if you can afford it. Cream the kids up and go to your local park that has a bit of water play if they are small or go to the soft play that want customers, a lot of them have aircon.

you just have to adapt for a few days a year. There are tonnes of air conditioned places if you don’t like the heat but don’t make a drama about it

Goneroundthetwist · 29/06/2025 08:17

YABU because you clearly have no idea what depression is.

It increases it. Sucks all the cooler night time air into the house. Good luck trying it - I hope you have a lovely cool sleep tonight!

verycloakanddaggers · 29/06/2025 08:19

And there’s this low level pressure to be out enjoying it. This is not true. Just slow down a bit and do things in cooler places - go to watch a film in a cool cinema. Clearly no one else is going to soft play, for obvious reasons.

I don’t know why but this has made me cry with laughter

So I’m not lacking a sense of humour but why? It’s just abusive; it’s not witty or anything. Anyway …

We are predicted 33 degrees tomorrow, it’s a lot. I’d probably be fine with the lovely weather if I could have long day time naps and then relax in the garden in the beautiful summer evenings but my life just doesn’t look like that if you see what I mean. So I am struggling.
