To say this weather is causing me to become depressed

allofusare · 29/06/2025 06:50

I know it sounds like I’m some sort of misery reveller, after all long hot days are supposed to be what we all love, but I’m really, genuinely struggling.

I haven’t slept well for weeks due to the heat and neither have the children. Late nights and early wake ups. Stuffy bedrooms even with fans circulating,

During the day it’s so hot. When in work I feel like I’m slowly melting in stuffy classrooms with kids whining endlessly about water bottles and crackling ice. On my days off (I’m part time) it’s often overwhelming, especially in the middle of the day. Constantly worrying about the children burning - one insisted on standing outside yesterday just for the hell of it with no hat or sun cream and had to be dragged in forcefully. Everyone’s just irritable with one another, the car is like an oven when you get in it, flies, fucking FLIES.

And there’s this low level pressure to be out enjoying it. One of our soft play centres has actually put out an appeal just begging people to attend because the hot weather means it’s been empty for weeks.

I want autumn now. I want coolness and leaves turning and rain.

Abnormal heat in the UK makes me hugely anxious physically and emotionally because it’s such a glimpse into the future regarding climate change. And especially if you have kids as many of us do on here that’s a very difficult global future for them to inherit as adults.

@allofusare

its not abnormal heat though…it’s just summer

allofusare · 29/06/2025 08:54

I didn’t say it was abnormal. Thats a different poster. It’s definitely warmer than average though, even for summer.

I don’t know why but this has made me cry with laughter

What did it say?

caramac04 · 29/06/2025 08:56

Whilst I am finding the heat a bit much I’m lucky to have a cool north facing kitchen so can escape the worst of it.
I do love the brighter, longer days though in comparison to the seemingly eternal gloom of the colder months. Crisp Autumn day - perfect! Weeks of grey sky and mud underfoot - hate it.
However, this extreme heat does curtail activity and, I’m ashamed to say, at times my ability to be civil.
Im going to try my new portable air con unit today- portable as in not fixed but too heavy to be lumping it up and down stairs.
Large tower fan in the bedroom works well for me.

The vast majority of scientists who study climate globally would disagree with you

allofusare · 29/06/2025 08:44

I teach in a school where we have a big proportion of students with an Asian background and they are all in agreement it’s hot!

What's that got to do with anything??
"Brown people get hot too" shocker!

WhatTheShit · 29/06/2025 08:58

Thank you for deleting, MNHQ. Peace and love restored

Aweecupofteaandabiscuit · 29/06/2025 08:58

Don’t move to Scotland to avoid anything.
I’m in the west and it’s just constant dampness, either from the drizzly rain or the sweat pissing off you underneath your lightweight rain jacket. Miserable. Worst of all worlds.
Also, the schools have broken up but you have to ask “why now?” when we in Scotland hold our actual Summer in April/May every year without fail. 🤷‍♀️

chillinwithmygnomies · 29/06/2025 06:55

Move to south wales, the weathers shite here!

That’s funny. I was just thinking, ‘move to South Wales OP, the weather’s great here!

We’ve had a great mix of warmer and cooler days. Life’s good here OP! It’s pretty much my optimal weather here in South Wales 😁

chatgptsbestmate · 29/06/2025 09:02

ETA I’m loving the pp who doesn’t believe in excess heat-related deaths, that’s those silly dead people told 😂

Absolutely! 🙄 What do scientists know anyway? 😬

IworkMiracles · 29/06/2025 09:06

So we know mum's net moderation starts at 8.30 😂 love the mass email response.

Anyway, op, I have an old black labrador. The stress of looking after her in the heat is awful. I am totally with you.

Why people pay to go abroad for hot weather (even before these heat waves) is beyond me.

West coast of Scotland have wee beasties. Can't fend them off with a fan or air con!

LAMPS1 · 29/06/2025 09:11

There’s a perfect climate waiting for you in West Wales OP, with clean air to breathe and noticeably far fewer flies.

Havetheweekendoffreports · 29/06/2025 09:12

Weather is probably exacerbating all the other stuff in your life that is depressing op?

Bushmillsbabe · 29/06/2025 09:12

FloofyBird · 29/06/2025 08:45

The neurodivergent people with crappy temperature regulation and the people on medication which also affects their temp regulation, for a start.

Plus older people, some heavily pregnant, young babies, people with other illnesses.

Just because one person manages heat ok doesn't mean everyone does. They don't put out a health warning for the fun of it

TheLostStargazer · 29/06/2025 09:15

I’m not a fan of too much heat either but we’re in an area that’s seeing the peak of the heat and with fans on and windows open, the bedrooms are cool overnight. We’ve slept fine.
Have a quick cool body shower before bed.
We have the fan linked above in our living room and a small one in our kitchen and it’s been bearable.

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 29/06/2025 09:16

I agree, OP, I'm in peri and sweating to the point that it's embarrassing.
You'll get piled on, no doubt, so I just wanted to send solidarity.
I do love summer but we dont get normal heat, it's always humid which makes it very uncomfortable.

Yes, that felt like peak Mumsnet, giving those silly dead people a jolly good talking to! It's probably just their anxiety making them think they're dead. Besides, everyone knows when the grim reaper comes calling you simply refuse to answer the door and give him a hard stare through the window.

Anyway op, I am another one in south Wales who has opened the curtains to a grey sky and drizzle yet again. I was feeling a bit miserable about it until I read your post. I always struggle in the heat too so god knows why I'm wishing a heat wave on myself! You'll probably just start acclimatising and the weather will break ..

TheFluffyTwo · 29/06/2025 09:20

I'm completely with you, OP! My absolute least favourite season. I'm just not built for it! Never was.

Spring? Lovely
Autumn? Lovely
Winter? Fine, though a bit too long.
Summer? Skip, skip, skip!

LoveItaly · 29/06/2025 09:22

MotherofPearl · 29/06/2025 08:44

Just to say I agree with you OP. There’s not much I enjoy about hot weather.

I also find myself really anxious about climate change and these very hot spells feel like harbingers of doom to me, and I just can’t enjoy them because of that. I associate them more and more with encroaching climate change.

We have always had spells of hot weather, especially in the South. Look up the summer of 1976 for one, and the summers of the early 1990’s, too.

I have a lot on which does feel harder to manage in the heat ! Nothing especially bad. I am tired though. I had multiple wake ups from dc2 Friday night to the point where I didn’t actually get to sleep between them so I only actually went to sleep at 3. Then she woke at 6. I’m definitely feeling it still!

What was it?! I didn't see the comment.

Cherrytree86 · 29/06/2025 09:28

Look there’s lots of advatanges- don’t have to pay for heating, lower electricity bills, it’s not dark when we get up for work and dark when we get home from work, all the plants and flowers are in bloom!

It is the summer. Warm weather is normal in summer.

Finteq · 29/06/2025 09:32

Very luckily we've not had weather that warm

Don't think you've mentioned 3d where you're staying.

But it may be worth researching moving if you're finding it so difficult.
