To not want to eat Chinese - help me to see if I’m being unreasonable

My partners favourite take away is Chinese. I’m not keen, I’m vegetarian (raised this way) and just find its bland and boring. I have eaten Chinese but I don’t really like it.

Therefore we often have Indian, Mexican, pizza etc if we have a takeaway all of which he also really likes. I often offer to get him a Chinese or suggest he gets one if I’m working late etc but he always says no.

it come to a head tonight as he wanted a Chinese take away and I didn’t fancy it but suggested I would get something else. He said it’s not the same eating a takeaway alone. I kinda get that, but I would have got myself an Indian. (We would be eating at the table together just different food)

He basically said I should suck it up and eat the Chinese food every so often for him? My rationale is that I shouldn’t have to eat what I don’t want or like?

who is being unreasonable?

Look for better takeaway! Menu from local Chinese... not huge.. but good!

This looks so good! Where is it?

TaupeMember · 24/06/2025 22:23

If one more person says she's a vegetarian!

Is this really worthy posting about?

Then don't read about it, let alone comment on it! How weird of you!
Bore off!!

Nackyposter · 24/06/2025 22:25

My ex tried to make me eat stuff to suit him, it put me right off my appetite. Eat what you want @Watermoves .

Worthy enough for you to comment?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/06/2025 22:27

I know what you mean, I’ve lost my enthusiasm for Chinese since I’ve become vegetarian. All the exciting bits seem to involve meat.

Now, the one near us isn’t that amazing or modern so I don’t know if it’s that, but it does decent meat options.

Tiswa · 24/06/2025 22:27

@Watermoves how are you with coriander that can make things taste like dishwater

abd have you tried multiple takeaways. The differences between Chinese and the ones you like shouldn’t be that great

Ponderingwindow · 24/06/2025 22:27

You don’t need to eat the same food. As long as you don’t begrudge him ordering a Chinese when it strikes his fancy, it shouldn’t matter

if he feels like he compromises too often. Just start getting separate orders more often.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 24/06/2025 22:28

Lmnop22 · 24/06/2025 22:14

I think it’s harsh for him to never get his favourite because its not your favourite.

Plus getting two takeaways means often you’re paying supplements for not ordering enough and two delivery fees and two different arrival times etc so you will likely spend extra and eat at different times.

So I think that sometimes you should eat Chinese food and other times you can order from elsewhere. The fairest way!

FFS, he can have Chinese food whenever he wants, no-one's stopping him. You seriously expect someone to eat something they don't like? Would you?

user946372 · 24/06/2025 22:28

Vegetarian solidarity: Chinese food in the UK is boring, bland, gloopy, and awful! I'm sure it's very different in actual China.

Rooroobear · 24/06/2025 22:30

You’re an adult you can eat what you want and so can he. Why should there be a compromise at all? I’d rather not eat something I don’t want and vice versa

Codlingmoths · 24/06/2025 22:30

Op, you do recognise this attitude cannot possibly apply to all Chinese restaurants, that there is amazing vegetarian food? So I’d suggest instead of takeaway you go out to a different Chinese restaurant (I’m suggesting you go out as I’m assuming there aren’t any others that deliver because this thread would be a joke if you were just ignoring all the other available chinese restaurants) and eat there to compromise.

Handbagcuriosity · 24/06/2025 22:31

He’s being weird about it, don’t understand why he can’t just have his Chinese and you get something else? DH and I are the opposite. I quite like Chinese, he doesn’t, so he’ll get pizza and I get Chinese and we eat what we want

But she doesn't want to eat it!

Waitresstime · 24/06/2025 22:32

😂 What on earth is wrong with the man, tell him to suck it up and eat his Chinese food while you eat your Indian food… what a pathetic man 🤣🤣🤣

usedtobeaylis · 24/06/2025 22:34

Of course you're not being unreasonable, you don't need to eat food you don't particularly Iike.

Order chicken and chips from the Chinese for you?

Literally the first line of the OP...

CaptainFuture · 24/06/2025 22:01

That’s not Chinese, Asian fusion at best but agree with others more Japanese. Also a restaurant menu, not a takeaway, with very limited veggie options… so unsure of the relevance to the vegetarian OP who doesn’t like Chinese takeaway. 🤣🤣

She's a vegetarian! It's in the second sentence!

babyproblems · 24/06/2025 22:37

I think YABU for not liking Chinese takeaway😂
I live far far away from a Chinese takeaway now. I would pay 3 figures for someone to bring me a Chinese from the takeaway where I used to live!!! 🫠

will add there were lots of veggie options. All amazing!!!

proximalhumerous · 24/06/2025 22:37

TaupeMember · 24/06/2025 22:23

If one more person says she's a vegetarian!

If one more person can't manage to read and assimilate the OP...

It's hardly Tolstoy.

Zhx3 · 24/06/2025 22:37

If you haven't already tried it, salt and pepper anything is usually nice. Spicy though! I like the S&P chips and chicken wings from mine, but the tofu is also very nice, with steamed rice.

Endofyear · 24/06/2025 22:38

He's being an arse. Of course you're not going to get excited about eating food you don't like! What sort of a person insists that they want you to eat something you don't like? Bloody weird 😕

godmum56 · 24/06/2025 22:38

Setting aside what the food actually is, I think its weird for him to want you to eat the same thing regardless of what you want and to want you to get excited about food you don't like. Have you asked him why he feels like this?

WaltzingWaters · 24/06/2025 22:39

I’m with you OP. I don’t understand the excitement over Chinese and much prefer Indian or Thai, find it much more flavourful. And with the price of takeaway it’s best to have something you both enjoy, even if that means getting different cuisines.
