To think that those with piercings are low class?

I have been on a discussion elsewhere on MN about this and i am talking about anything outside of perhaps the ears and nose.

people riddled with piercings, especially women are what i would call low class and as i explained on the other thread that doesn't relate to income
you can be loaded and be TOTALLY chavvy

Am I being Unreasonable? i don't think so, but please advise

I could put a pic of some of DPs piercings on here but it would be too rude for your viewing!!!

(you can guess where I mean.)

Oliveoil · 28/05/2008 20:50

I would rather come across goths of an evening than a shower of sheep all wearing tracksuits with their hands down their trousers

but I still maintain, WHY would you want a face full of metal?

SparklyGothKat · 28/05/2008 20:52

noooooooooooo PC, my eyes!!!!! I have that thought on my mind now!!!!!! Thats sooo unfair to do that, I know both of you!!!

PersonalClown · 28/05/2008 20:53

Tattoos and piercings are a matter of personal taste, and whilst not everyone can be expected to like their appearance, it is both ridiculous, ignorant and extremely rude to describe anyone who has them as "low class", "chavvy" or anything else derogatory ....... didn't someone say "girls who put out" earlier ?? How bloody childish.

There are heaps of ways in which other people choose to decorate themselves .... such as the way they wear their hair, the way they apply their make-up, or the particular clothes they feel comfortbale and/or attractive in, which I wouldn't be seen dead in myself but that matters not one iota to me so long as they are friendly, considerate and polite ....... the real proof that someone possesses "class".

I have tattoos (plural) and until relatively recently I had ten different piercings (pregnancy, and an operation (where I had to remove my tongue stud) put paid to them, as the holes closed up). I very much doubt that I'd ever be described as "chavvy" ...... more like "boring" probably ...... simply because those things weren't usually on display and because I dress pretty averagely. Would the person I am suddenly change once I'd admitted my "shameful secret" ?? ...... if so, then how shallow would the person judging me be ?

lydiathetattooedlady · 28/05/2008 22:28

yes YABU- how can anyone possibly cast judgement on 'class' with regards to pesonal appearance? and what exactly does make somebody lower class?
i have a full tattoo sleeve on one arm and a half sleeve on another with many other tattoos on my body and piercings. i am well educated to a high level, my parents both have very repectful jobs, but people like you think you can judge because i don't look pretty to your narrow minded eyes.
Before my dd i had a very successful job as a visual merchandiser and currently co-run a successful business-am i chavvy and lower class?

scottishmummy · 28/05/2008 22:36

we all use adornments to differentiate and make statement eg make-up,piercings,clothes,etc. You don't necessarily have to like it, but it is erroneous to judge solely on that. chances are you are passing up a thoroughly decent person

my platinum diamond nose stud is VERY CLASSY

Mij · 29/05/2008 11:55

I have a belly button ring and I'm terribly, terribly middle class, very polite, extremely well-educated and modest, as you can see.

And I have the utmost respect for my body. I just wanted a bit of colour in the middle.

And have been described as 'classy' by any number of pissed nob-heads in dubious watering holes. In fact, I was even described as classy by the chief exec of a major quango. Who was pissed, admittedly, and that was fifteen years ago, but I still say it counts.

sweetbean · 29/05/2008 12:03

I will be glad when half term is over and all these stupid threads stop popping up just beacuse people are board !!!!!

Notyummy · 29/05/2008 12:03

It is an interesting debate. The sensible middle ground is to say 'well, loads of tattoos/piercings aren't my thing...but each to their own' (I have ears and tummy button done, so pretty mild really!)

The complicating factor is the way that people with piercings/tattoos are judged by others, and how it can effect job propects. That is why I will fight tooth and nail to prevent my dd having anything visible done in the future. Up to 2 years ago (when I was last involved in the process, and I believe it is still the case) when you applied for the police/fire brigade or any of the armed forces you would be sent a outline of the human body on a form and asked to mark where you had any tattoos or piercings. Cerain areas were acceptable, and certain weren't. If you wished to get in to be a commissioned officer (pilot in the RAF for example....a dream for lots of boys, and some girls)you would probably struggle with anything beyond a small tattoo on your tummy/thigh.

I realise that these jobs are not for everyone....but actually all they are doing is an overt example of what most employers do without stating it....removing people with potential 'offensive' looks from their recruiting pool.

It might not be fair, but it happens, and I wouldn't want to take a risk that a career I really fancied was denied to me by some cosmetic choices I had made.

SummatAndNowt · 29/05/2008 12:37

yabu. It's who people are inside that matters and your attitude perpetuates shallow and simple thinking that wants to put people into easily definable boxes instead of actually taking time to think.

MsSparkle · 29/05/2008 12:54

posieparker, i don't judge people by what they look like (book by it's cover) because having known people from various backgrounds, i know how important it is to get to know that "weird" looking person before you make judgements.

It's a shame the op didn't follow suit.
