To think that those with piercings are low class?

loudmouth · 23/05/2008 22:46

I have been on a discussion elsewhere on MN about this and i am talking about anything outside of perhaps the ears and nose.

people riddled with piercings, especially women are what i would call low class and as i explained on the other thread that doesn't relate to income
you can be loaded and be TOTALLY chavvy

Am I being Unreasonable? i don't think so, but please advise

I think, like tattoos, body piercings used to be unusual on women. Now they're quite commonplace so have lost the Bohemian image they once had.

mylovelymonster · 24/05/2008 19:57

I'm thinking of starting a rival thread on the aesthetic of tatts and piercings on the over 50s...............................not sure why, but I have the most bizarre image in my noodle.....

RustyBear · 24/05/2008 20:03

VS - the one in the middle of just under your bottom lip (no, I don't know what it's called either!) was the one DD had to take out - it made her gum bleed very badly - so I don't think you missed much by not getting it.

Oh btw OP, You do realise even talking about class isn't particularly, well, classy?

posieparker · 24/05/2008 21:09

I hate to see women with kids and their belly buttons peirced, they're usually a little large and it looks rough. We can all get awy with things when we're young and slim, but large girls with crop tops and peircings is just wrong!

Izzywhizzy · 24/05/2008 21:18

I used to work with a guy who had seven piercings in his penis area ( a couple of his testicles and one through his bum hole). He'd done five of them himself!! He also had loads of piercings through his tongue and had a speech impediment- he could be a bit tricky to understand at times. I wouldn;'t have said he was 'low class' tho'.

spanky81 · 24/05/2008 21:23

YABU-Is it the piecings or the fact they may be low class that bothers y

bubblagirl · 25/05/2008 12:57

i think it comes down to individuality and not class

we should be small fat thin be able to do what we want with our bodies without being judged if you dont like it dont do it but if someone has the confidence to do it dont bring them down

too many people judge these days and wonder why women have no self confidence its hardly suprising

if it makes you feel good then do it its people who class themselves as being more upper class that think its tacky but many celebs and great role models who have more many than we know what to do with it have body piercings

there just covered

mangosorbet · 26/05/2008 01:37

Oh stupid me, I've always valued people for their personality, attitude and actions. I will now, having been 'shown the light' value people on appearance alone.

Tortington · 26/05/2008 01:41

we all make judgements based on how people look - thats why fashion is so important - if society as a whole judges peole on their personalities alone and what kind of person they were, the high street clothing stores would go out of business as we all wore comfy velcro fasten shoes, jog pants and t, shirt.

posieparker · 26/05/2008 06:58

Of course we judge people on the way they look, that's how we seek our mate, friends and the like. We may not always be right but certain things do give us indicators about people and that's why they do it. A Goth, hippy, sloane all want to send a message about who they are by the way they look. I wear jeans but never with trainers, never wear a tracksuit unless I'm doing sport, I don't wear Burberry, Uggs, I do wear heels but not with skinny jeans (because I'm 33! and not a sleb) I don't wear acrylic nails etc.... these all say something about me.

mylovelymonster · 26/05/2008 17:36

acrylic nails fgs!!

tigertea · 26/05/2008 18:59

YAB extremely U unless you have evidence to indicate that your opinion is based on something other than ignorant prejudice. As I reported on the other thread, I studied BP and body modification practices in Western societies for my Anthropology Maters and on the whole, those I interviewed couldn't have been a more intelligent and well educated (and well mannered) bunch. I suggest that that rather than posting inflammatory posts on MN, you spend your time talking to those who are heavily into piercing and find out why - there are many fascinating stories to learn about - that is unless you have already done this, LM, in which case, I would be very interested in your experineces and evidence.

mylovelymonster · 26/05/2008 19:00

oooooOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooh! Handbags at dawn

tigertea · 26/05/2008 19:10

Have just browsed this thread in more details. Firstly, in my academic experience, most people who are heavily into BP and BM are also into tatooing, and the motivations are pretty similar and, like BP, wildly varied. A key one is celebration / marking of an event, which ties into the motivation for similar practices in the non-West. There are however many other motivations and in a small (and I mean small) minority of individuals, you could say that these practices are a form of (more culturally sanctioned) self harm in individuals with a psychological vulnerability. However, this is the exception rather than the rule and this does not mean they are "lower class" (one such person I interviewed was middle - upper class. Re: successful people with piercings, my GP has a pierced chin - we call him Dr. Disco and he is fab - the children love him!!

mylovelymonster · 26/05/2008 19:12

It's still blardy ugly though.

tigertea · 26/05/2008 19:14

Maybe to you and maybe to me (I am not pierced other than single ears)but the beauty of this world is that everyone is different! Anyone - off to bath the DCs

wotulookinat · 26/05/2008 19:16

I've got piercings and tats, and I have a good job. I would class myself as lower-class though because I'm skint, (but I think most teachers are) not because of the piercings or tats.

ladylush · 26/05/2008 19:23

What's the difference between say a nose piercing (which the op says is just about ok) and a belly button piercing? Nothing as far as I can see. I've got the former and only take it out when I've got a cold! My personal view is that the OP is being unreasonable. Piercings are not low class, but can make people seem intimdating/scary. That's our problem - not theirs.

wotulookinat · 26/05/2008 19:25

No difference, surely, except that a belly button piercing is easily covered up.

ladylush · 27/05/2008 21:35

That was my point - a nose piercing could be deemed more offensive than a belly button piercing. I was just questioning the logic of the OP. I knew a girl who had a clitoral piercing. She said it could be uncomfortable as she had the sensation of being permanently aroused! Still, at least it wasn't visible - apart from to her partner.

scottishmummy · 27/05/2008 21:54

i believe it to be low class to cast aspersions about piercings when you are patently wrong

DirtySexyMummy · 27/05/2008 22:00

There is nothing worse than shallow, self-righteous, stuck up bitches who think that someone is 'of a certain class' because of piercings or tattoos.

Horrific people.

ladylush · 27/05/2008 22:17

Well, there are plenty worse..........but yes I agree with your general sentiment
