To think that those with piercings are low class?

loudmouth · 23/05/2008 22:46

I have been on a discussion elsewhere on MN about this and i am talking about anything outside of perhaps the ears and nose.

people riddled with piercings, especially women are what i would call low class and as i explained on the other thread that doesn't relate to income
you can be loaded and be TOTALLY chavvy

Am I being Unreasonable? i don't think so, but please advise

OP posts:
niceglasses · 27/05/2008 22:22

chavvy and low class?

Humm, sounds like maybe someone very shallow who judges on appearances and loves to stick labels on pple thereby making themselves feel slightly superior?

Oh, wait a minute, thats the OP.

Tell you what love, I'd rather have a stud through me I don't know what than your narrow minded clap trap.

scottishmummy · 27/05/2008 22:24

it is vapid, unintellectual, lazy to judge by appearances.such assumptions impede thinking and judgments

anyway class is so last century Dahling

posieparker · 28/05/2008 07:47

Scottish, do you not form opinions a little bit on appearance....even nice judgements. IE a woman of understated beauty, do you not think she's probably nice? A woman with dreds (sp?), that she may be peace loveing? A man with a skin head and a union flag on his Tee shirt, that he may be part of the BNP?
Afterall some of us dress in a certain way to send a message about who we are.

posieparker · 28/05/2008 07:48

A woman that can't spell, that she may be a poor typist or really stupid???

wotulookinat · 28/05/2008 09:46

Maybe the skin head with the Union Jack tshirt is actually going bald (so shaves his head) and is a patriotic fellow. Doesn't make him a member of the BNP.

Ripeberry · 28/05/2008 09:59

My DDs childminder had loads of piercings, in her tongue, both eyebrows, 5 piercings on each ear, belly button and one on her chin.
Did not stop her being a FAB childminder who took and passed every childcare course going.
The real chavs are the ones who wear massive gold rings and chains, white tracksuits and baseball caps (blokes).
And the chav women, always wear skimpy tops so they can show their tattoos on their backs or belly button and they always dress like hookers even in the middle of the day...
shudder .

Oliveoil · 28/05/2008 10:01

First of all I think the OP is definitely being unreasonable.

The second point is about moderation. As someone with tattoos (four - one on each wrist (both discreet), lower back and between shoulder blades) and piercings (tragus and labret stud), I look down on people that get the wrong tattoos in the wrong places for the wrong reasons, and end up looking like they've been rubber stamped (e.g. Britney, Amy Winehouse (although I can't say I'm privy to their reasons)). I also think that certain piercings do nothing for any kind of aesthetic effect(eyebrows). What people keep under their clothes concerns me not one bit.

I guess what I'm trying to say is everyone's got their own level of snobbery, but to say that I'm "low class" because of my choice of body adornment is foolish to say the least.

FYI, I'm an environmental consultant, and my GP has a nose stud.

mumof2teenboys · 28/05/2008 16:42

Im educated to degree level (2.1), I'd like to think that i'm a reasonable, contributing member of society.
I have 2 sons who i have raised on my own.
I work full-time with people with dementia, own my house, pay my way and definately am not low class!! (working class)
I have piercings and tattoos, lots of them. I am not less valuable as a member of society because of them.

YABU

posieparker · 28/05/2008 18:57

Wot, do you really think that or would you make a split second assumption? I would make the assumption I'm afraid, I wouldn't make a concrete opinion but I would be surprised if he was then joined by his wife wearing a hijab!

wotulookinat · 28/05/2008 19:03

Yes, that might surprise me, but I wouldn't make an assumption about his political standing based on his appearance.

posieparker · 28/05/2008 19:07

I may not either I was just illustrating that some people dress to express who they are and give visual clues as to their beliefs/culture/persona, I think peircing and tattos are part of that.

MsSparkle · 28/05/2008 19:24

A girl who works for my dp and who is a friend of mine now had a party last Friday night. This girl and her friends decribe themselves as alternative and i swear they were the nicest people i have met in a long time.

If you looked at them in the street you might think "wierdos" and "freaks" but they are not! They were polite and friendly to me, made me feel very welcome and all shaked my hand when i left and said how nice it was to meet me.

You really cannot judge anyone until you know them and spend time with them. A valued lesson in life; Never judge a book by it's cover!

posieparker · 28/05/2008 19:28

MsSparkle, no good saying don;t judge a book by it's cover as I have yet met anyone with sight that doesn't, never.

peacelily · 28/05/2008 19:45

Wow do people like the OP still, exist!? Where because I'll have to remind myself never to go there.

The posters on here who use the adjectives mingin, lower class, trashy, chavvy and rough well, they're describing themselves!

How can ANY 21st century woman be so ill informed, narrow minded and nasty. I equate judging individuals negativelt on their appearance akin to prejudice of the worst kind. Fair enough to not like them , for them not to be your thing but to be so out and out judgmental about it I'm quite surprised.

I have piercings and 3 tattoos. Am a senior practitioner on a CAMHS team, have 2 degrees studying for a third and am training to be a cognitive behaviour therapist. I don't belive in all the class nonsense on here so I'm not going to equate myself with any particular tribe. Load of crap.

peacelily · 28/05/2008 19:47

I think the goth girl who was battered to death recently in Bacup was attacked because of her "wierd" alternative appearance, including piercings.

Your view is not only small minded it's dangerous.

youngbutnotdumb · 28/05/2008 20:07

I agree with most others on here. To me I think 'people of lower class' are people who bahave in a certain manner such as the people who killed that poor goth girl, I'm sure they didn't have lots of peircings but are far lower than the majority of others! I myself don't have piercings other than my ears but simply because it's not my thing and maybe that's the way you should look at it too. If you don't like them don't get them.

Oliveoil · 28/05/2008 20:28

I do think tattoos and piercings look minging

does not mean that the PERSON is minging

if I don't like someone's shoes/dress/skirt, it doesn't mean I don't like them as a person

fgs get a grip

chocchild · 28/05/2008 20:30

I haven't read the whole thread, only the first dozen or so posts but I think this was posted for a reaction.

Doobydoo · 28/05/2008 20:30

Low ClassSome of you sound like the Bucket woman from Keeping up Appearances

PersonalClown · 28/05/2008 20:34

Chocchild- This thread was posted as response to one my Dp started.
He was asking peoples opinions on how many piercing they thought was enough.

OP stated that we were lower class because I have 7 piercings and he has 14. Mostly visable.

SparklyGothKat · 28/05/2008 20:35

hehe! i am very low class then...

scottishmummy · 28/05/2008 20:36

LOL oh Mrs KickDaBucketis frightful and she does not like anything

scottishmummy · 28/05/2008 20:36
