I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

@Welliesandtweed If you turn up at work looking like an unmade bed, then it indicates you don't have pride in your job and your standards.

What evidence do you have of this correlation, outside of ‘I think that…’?

Why on earth is this of any concern to you? It has zero impact on your life and is none of your business?

The impact of obesity on the NHS. People in some cases quite frankly stink, and as a result, more people avoid public transport. So it does have an indirect impact on all our lives.

I find the only people who get annoyed about this are those who like to dress up but feel conspicuous because others prefer to be comfortable.

Or have very low self worth . So get their worth from external validation. There is also no way that every single female parent had a frock on and every single male parent had chinos on. I’m thinking back to my child’s parents evening , I’m very much not a scruff and I had wide jeans on and a jacket.

MonteStory · 23/06/2025 11:12

I love threads like this because they just confirm that no matter how much money you have, no matter what schools say about inclusion and bursaries, private schools are establishment designed to maintain the status quo.

They are not schools for ‘people like you’. The ‘right’ people know that the end of term event is one you dress up for.

Still waiting for op to come back and explain what garish colours are. Colours are colours, surely?Do you mean bright colours? Not everyone has the complexion for eau de nil, pastel pink or pale blue.

Whilst I agree that scruffy jogging bottoms wouldnt be my 'go to' choice for a restaurant, I wouldnt judge others for wearing them.

What angry responses -I think you touched a sore point OP -everyone so defensive of their scruffy look!

This. I agree OP.

Isn’t garish self explanatory in terms of clothes colours: excessively bright, clashing/jarring combinations; lurid and showy.

it certainly doesn’t mean only pastels or even muted colour palettes, it does mean leave the neon lemon and lime at home

<<<cue MNers rapidly googling to find a naice sophisticated neon lemon and lime dress>>>

I don't mind scruffy clothing but I do mind badly fitted clothing or lack of awareness. Like men is jogging bottoms with their dicks waggling about... or chunky girls in crop tops with fat rolls spilling over... or both men and woman in such short shorts that you can see everything!

Pickingmyselfup · 23/06/2025 11:37

For my kids sports day I put on some jeans, trainers and a top, other women were wearing dresses, shorts, jeans, the men were mostly in jeans or shorts.

Today I did the drop off in a pair of skinny light grey tracksuit bottoms, flip flops, a t shirt and a long cardigan. I can't see me getting changed for pick up but I'll switch the flip flops for trainers because my feet were cold this morning. It's a mile walk each way so I need something practical not dressy so I opt for flats rather than heels. If I'm going straight to the gym/for a run I'll be in some kind of exercise wear. Some days I look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards, hair shoved back with a headband, baggy trackies and a hoody but I'm walking to school, not taking part in a fashion show or going for lunch with a long lost friend.

For work I wear black thick leggings, black hi top trainers and a white top. I'm on my feet all day carrying food and drinks and dodging people so stilettos would be a bad move. I wore wedges for a while until they broke but they were just as comfortable and as practical as my flats. I don't often wear makeup because I can't be bothered but I'm clean and look presentable. I once had a manager suggest all the female waiting staff wore heels...it didn't go down too well.

If I go out I make more of an effort but it depends wear I'm going. Some places are more dressy than others and also the occasion matters too. Someone I see all the time and we are just going for an after hot tub drinks I'll wear my tracksuit bottoms and trainers with no makeup. Someone I see less often and it's more of a get together then I'll wear something a bit dressier and put makeup on because it's more of an "occasion"

Yes, this did not actually happen as described. OP has overegged the pudding here.

OP, are we talking Floral Midi Dresses?

😂☠️

But if they're out, does that make them fit only for the hoi polloi? What about the denim jacket? The trainers are already a sign of the downfall of civilization.

12doublerolls · 23/06/2025 11:50

I agree, most people these days look like they’ve just rolled out of bed. What’s with the big baggy clothes making them look 3 sizes bigger than they actually are 😬 dresses and trainers is another big bear of mine. It’s summer fgs put some sandles on and get some air to the feet 🙄

Wow. Someone has the courage to express an opinion and all you can do is attack and insult. You must be a millenial or gen Z ( triggered easily) or a slob.i didn't realise mum's could be so nasty to strangers.

I'm expressing my opinion of their opinion.😘

Why do you care so much?
You have NO idea why someone might be choosing to wear baggy clothes. Until recently I was wearing baggy clothes must of the time because I felt like shit and wanted to hide my body.

Also, who made you the shoe police?

Pollenandbloom · 23/06/2025 12:02

Sorry I haven't the read whole thread, may have been covered already but for me and for family/friends, the "death of the high street" has had an impact on our wardrobes - where I live we used to have 2 large clothing-focused department stores and 1 small one, plus around 12 (that I can remember) separate concessions (e.g. Topshop, H&M).

The department stores have all now closed and the buildings have stood empty for several years, and only four individual stores remain - plus a Primark, which arrived part-way through the other closures and sucked the life out of the other shops. Other shopping destinations are between 1.5 and 3 hours away by car (train services locally now too unreliable to consider). There's only really online shopping, supermarkets or Primark, and online shopping comes with the hassle of delivery (charges and timing), returns etc. It's definitely had an impact on how smartly dressed I feel, for example I recently realised I'd compromised on the fit of a coat I'd ordered online, in a way that I never would have if I'd still had access to lots of clothes shops locally.

I'm just surprised anyone is optimistic enough to assume they'll like the net effect of more feet on display. That seems like be careful what you wish for territory!

Iloveeverycat · 23/06/2025 12:22

What's wrong with coloured hair. I am 60 and it is purple and pink

Ceramiq · 23/06/2025 12:22

I would definitely have worn a dress or a pretty blouse/summer trousers to an event at my children's school, as would every other mother I was friends with. I don't personally find summer dresses inconvenient for sitting down on the grass for a picnic - it is what they are designed for after all.

Taking care of one's feet ought to be as high a priority as taking care of one's teeth - both play an essential role in whole body health across the lifespan and both take a daily bashing.

Fizbosshoes · 23/06/2025 12:29

I have some summer dresses, sonetimes I wear with flip-flops, sometimes with wedge heel sandles and most often with trainers because that's more practical. Almost every pair of sandals I own gives me blisters, so I only wear them if there's not going to be much walking involved

If I go to a wedding or something that requires dressing "nicely" I am perfectly able to put a suitable outfit together. (Usually dress and heels) If I'm going to sainsburys/to work etc then I'll dress more casually. I've never owned or worn a blazer since leaving school and I don't ever need to dress formally for work. So I don't. If I'm meeting friends for a meal or a drink, it will be somewhere in between.

I walk round barefoot at home most of the time, my feet get plenty of air.

However I am yet to find a pair of sandles that do not cause me pain, because my feet seem to be really sensitive and most types of shoes cause some kind of blister.

So I'll stick with my trainers while I'm walking around outside thanks. Don't worry about other people's feet. It's weird.
