Just a small experiment. Not a marketing gimmick, but I will explain shortly, once a few people have answered. Or not answered!
If you are British born, can you answer these five questions without Googling or using any other materials for the answers?
(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping?
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne?
(3) How many local authorities are there in London?
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I?
(5) What significant event took place in 1284?
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games?

Is Francis Drake?
battle of Boyne - 1400 something?
handel
24 London boroughs?
I thought the last one might be the South Africa guy who murdered his girlfriend. But as it’s the uk citizen test guessing it’s a Brit. So Tanni grey Thompson

StrawberrySquash · 22/06/2025 14:44

I'm okay with having to do a test and having to revise because I do think it's as much about showing an interest in and commitment to the country. But some of the questions can be very odd. I remember some historians arguing about the correct answer to an Anglo Saxon one. But at the end of the day you presumably just revise like you do for any test.

The other issue is that it privileges bright, academic types. But I'm not sure how you get around that.

spoonbillstretford · 22/06/2025 14:47

No idea and I am generally pretty good at pub quizzes and general knowledge.

I’m educated to Masters level and could only guess at a couple (though I did notice you said 5 questions when there are 6!)

If that’s any kind of citizenship test it’s basically sadistic gaslighting, surely?

MonsterasEverywhere · 22/06/2025 14:50

You're certainly being unreasonable to ask because there is a very simple book that you can study before taking the multiple choice test.

However, in answer to your questions
(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping? Knox-Johnson
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne? Late 17th century... maybe 1690?
(3) How many local authorities are there in London? 32 boroughs and the City of London (so 33)
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I? Handel
(5) What significant event took place in 1284? Wales came under English law.
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games? David Weir.

guernseydonkey · 22/06/2025 14:51

Oh god, I'm embarassingly bad at UK history! I can't get a single one of these- I know I see the Battle of the Boyne on my calendar each year but I can't remember when! The others I haven't even a clue. I know some of the famous explorers and sailors, some of the London boroughs, and some British composers, but not nearly enough about each of them to make a confident guess.

Total respect for anyone learning these to achieve citizenship, it's not an easy process!

PistachioTiramisu · 22/06/2025 14:51
  1. Sir Francis Chichester?
LibertyLily · 22/06/2025 14:52

British born and bred here.

I thought 1 was Magellan. No idea about 2 or 3, although would have guessed twenty-something for London boroughs. Know 4 is Handel. Thought 5 was Magna Carta and 6 was Ellie Simmonds or possibly Jonny Peacock.

So one correct 🙄

The13thFairy · 22/06/2025 14:52

No idea about any of them.

I am a naturalised British Citizen, so not British born. But you cannot compare the two. If you are born in the country, you have natural affinity and exposure to culture, even if you don’t know the answer to these question, just by growing up in the country. I had to learn about years of battles in my countries in history class, which I don’t remember at all but if a person moves there and want to take citizenship, and needed to prepare for a small test, I don’t think it would be fair for them to complain and compare to people like me.

The purpose of these questions is to instil knowledge and pride in the country you are adopting.

This test may require some preparation but not that hard. Now talk to people living for years and still not given citizenships in countries like Switzerland, Singapore, etc. even when they moved in as children. You won’t think twice that you are treated differently to the natural born citizens when it came to immigration related rules. But immigrants there are leading good lives. You made a choice by moving to a country and you need to respect the rules and ways of the country including life in the UK test. Complaining to citizens about it shows an entitled attitude.

You don’t get citizenship automatically by taking the test. It is for ILR. Citizenship is an extra £1000+ and then another fee for a British passport.

It’s not entitled to point out that most British born can’t pass the test.

FiendsandFairies · 22/06/2025 14:55

I can’t answer any without Googling. I was born in Canada but moved here when I was one year old.

tammienorrie · 22/06/2025 14:57

I could have a guess at the Battle of the Boyne as I know what it was about and which king was involved which narrows it down. Also the 1284 one.

I live in Glasgow therefore London boroughs are totally irrelevant.

JustGiveMeWineNow · 22/06/2025 15:00

So the battle of the Aboyne did not take place on the 12th July. I am shook🤣🤣🤣

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 22/06/2025 15:02

I'd better pack my bags I suppose. I was born here, but grew up in another country. I assume Q1 - 5 are ones that might be covered in school, but I'm fairly confident that they were of no significance to the syllabus where I went to school, so they are not even things that I might have been taught and have since forgotten. And sport bores the shit out of me, so I wouldn't have a clue about 6.

Oh, one thing I do know - you're all spelling Händel wrong 😉

Hoardasauruskaren · 22/06/2025 15:02

Battle of the Boyne 12th July 1690. I only know this as I live in the sectarian west of Scotland! No clue of sny of the others.

newhouseplans · 22/06/2025 15:07

Erm...

  1. Err... Around the world in 80 days springs to mind but can't remember if that was just fiction or what the guy was called
  1. No idea.
  1. I can remember...

Hackney
Islington
Camden
Westminster
City of London (does it count?)
Enfield
Barnet
Haringey
Hounslow
Lambeth
Lewisham
Catford
Greenwich
Wandsworth
Epping
Walthamstow
Waltham Forest
Leyton
Ealing
Kensington & Chelsea
Kingston
Richmond
Tower Hamlets
Merton
Sutton
Barking
Wapping

I'm not 100% sure they're all boroughs, and feel like I'm missing a lot. So, I'm going to assume I'm missing about a third, that comes to 39.

  1. No idea
  2. Same
  1. The swimmer? What's her name? Ellie someone?

What a load of nonsense hoops people have to jump through! Ridiculous.

What 😱 I have always known this as I live in an area where Orangemen march to celebrate it? Here it’s the closest Saturday to the 12th but in NI its usually the 12th July!

KruelladeVille23 · 22/06/2025 12:06

Many British people would not be able to answer these particular questions off the top of their heads. But there are many other questions in the test on government and voting, women’s rights, disabled rights etc the answers to which would be obvious to most (all) British citizens.

I think the whole point of this easy, multiple choice, test is that it requires a bit of preparation. This shows a degree of commitment to the idea of becoming a British citizen which should be seen as a serious step bringing with responsibilities in addition to rights.

This! If I wanted to settle in another country I’d follow the rules of that country and do what I needed to do to comply.
Im sure the test isn’t compulsory and people are welcome to return to their country of birth?

Hoardasauruskaren · 22/06/2025 15:10

Around the the world in 80 days was Jules Verne. French I think? No idea if its fiction. I’m frantically resisting the urge to Google!

madaboutpurple · 22/06/2025 15:11

I didn't know any answers. It just shows that test is difficult. I would need google.

Or we're spelling it the way Handel chose to spell when he settled in Britain (and where he later became a naturalised citizen).

It's not "the rules of the country". It's some arbitrary questions that don't actually reflect real life in Brittain, dreamt up by a politician wanting to evoke nostalgic feelings of Britain being great, with the primary aim of getting people like you to vote for them.

Comefromaway · 22/06/2025 15:19
