Ratio of men to women in china

Thomasina79 · 21/06/2025 16:10

Apparently there are 30 million more men than women, due to a past history of favouring boys over girls, with abortions of female fetid, adoption of girls, even baby girls being abandoned by the road. So I can’t feel much sympathy about this. The phrases you reap what you sow comes to mind. I remember years ago seeing ‘The dying rooms’ about baby girls in orphanages being starved. Now the men are complaining that they have no one to marry!

“Apparently”

source?

IwasDueANameChange · 21/06/2025 16:14

This is well known and has been an issue in china for a while. There's no "apparently" about it. Its linked to the one child policy - people favoured having sons.

fount · 21/06/2025 16:14

Well, to be fair, the men now reaching marrying age weren't the ones who made these choices. Their parents' generation and government policies are to blame.

Game0fCrones · 21/06/2025 16:16

Its been coming down the track for years. I dont know what the Chinese thought would happen.

greencartbluecart · 21/06/2025 16:16

It’s linked to sexism and mysogeny really - the one child just exposed how strong that is

MemorableTrenchcoat · 21/06/2025 16:16

The men who have no one to marry were not the architects of the one child policy. Also, the article explains that are unable to find a wife are viewed as failures in Chinese society, moreso than the UK, for example.

That's a very simplistic analysis. In rural China it is traditional for the wife to move in with the husband and his parents. If there is only one child, the daughter moves out, leaving no one to care for her parents in their old age. So fear of having no one to care for them would certainly have fed in to the desire for a son.

China is not the only place. Millions of ‘missing’ women from the population.

Same issue in India, although there wasn't a one child policy. New born baby girls being dumped in rivers etc.

What gold?

Women just want a man to be able to look after himself, to not be a burden and you think that's expecting too much?

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 21/06/2025 16:58

@TomatoSandwichesno point feeding it

Well the "gold diggers" will have their pick of men, since there aren't enough women to go around. Hmm

LIGHTHEARTED

Maybe Chinese women will get a good deal then - they could have multiple husbands in a reverse of the ancient (and not so ancient) harems. Might be a win-win.

I’d choose the following and they’d all live at the end of my garden, and brought indoors if and when required…

one to talk to (interesting, well read, good listener)

one to earn the money (hard working, always at the office, wealthy)

one for an amazing sex life (you don’t need the details!)

one to clean up after everyone (notices ALL the messes and acts quickly)

one to have children with (genetically blessed)

one to be the children’s father if previous one is lacking)

And maybe one more so I could have them on a weekly rota; perhaps ‘one to organise everyone else’

twinklystar23 · 21/06/2025 17:12

Also, since the one child policy was removed there hasnt been a reversal of women having more children.
I did read something on this some time ago, it said that chinese women viewed the reversal with suspicion. However, and not being an expert on China, maybe due to the long period the OCP wss in place for a cultural change took place. Maybe women liked the freedom of possibly havong greater financial freedom, choices possibly to have more independence? Find it slightly amusing that their plans to limit womens choices of the number of chdren they have (male decision mainly?) Hasnt suddenly reverted when they now desire it to.

It’s always the one with not a pot to piss in who obsessed about gold diggers.

Yet they don’t have the same energy for the brethren the cock lodgers.

Where does it say the men are complaining?

twinklystar23 · 21/06/2025 17:22

Checked on wikepedia one part said more funding was given to girls education. So likely it would have bought them more financial independence. Which would have given them greater choices.

Im not sure how much financial freedom, choices and independence there is for people is communist China. Especially less well off people.

I dont think anyone from a western society can understand just how culturally different China is. It is so ingrained in the people.

Finteq · 21/06/2025 17:26

Does anyone know what it's like for the women??

They do they have a huge choice???

Are they finding it very easy to find partners?

Do they still have the stigma if they don't get married?

Are they finding they get harassed by single men??

Are they finding they feel more empowered because they have a greater choice??

It’s always the man that owns three pairs of socks and a copy of grand theft auto that is afraid of gold diggers 🤣

roses2 · 21/06/2025 17:28

I wonder if this means Chinese men are more helpful around the house than European men and have fewer domestic related arguments??

I believe the problem in China is women are preferring to stay single:

https://www.scmp.com/opinion/china-opinion/article/3273449/put-ring-it-chinese-women-dont-need-marriage-any-more

Most of the article is behind a paywall, but the headline speaks for itself! Chinese women see no need to put up with gender discrimination - pregnancy, childcare, working and doing most of the housework….They are better off staying single!

Being Chinese | Put a ring on it? Chinese women don’t need marriage any more

Women in China once believed marriage to be a necessary passage in life. Now they know they can choose to follow their desires.
