I don’t want to do an escape room.

Partner wants me to go to an escape room with him. I don’t want to go as I am claustrophobic. This does not mean I am awkward, I went to Paris with my daughter and I enjoyed that and no I do not speak French but I did German at school and can still remember some of that. Anxiety can sometimes appear as awkward behaviour. I do suffer with some anxiety but that is possibly connected to claustrophobia.

I think OP is trying to say she’s generally an anxious person, so going to Paris caused her anxiety (especially as she doesn’t speak French, only a bit of German). But the trip to Paris actually turned out alright in the end, so maybe the escape room will be ok too?

Yes, OP, it will be fine. It’s just a room with puzzles in it. You can get out if you want to.

RentalWoesNotFun · 20/06/2025 23:37

If it was me and the place was reasonably close I’d email and see if I could go visit the place. Alone without DH. And see how I felt. I wouldn’t tell him until after I’d been if I thought it was ok.

These things are supposed to be better in groups tbh. I’d prefer that myself. Just not tooo many people in a tiny room.

What's the connection with escape rooms and Paris?

I didn't know the French speak German.

I didn't know the French speak German.

Most countries can speak more than one language. In Britain we only tend to speak English unless bilingual due to family

I’m badly claustrophobic and escape rooms are fine for me. They aren’t particularly small (they are no smaller than a room in your own home) so you can freely wander about, you aren’t locked in and totally unable to escape - you are being remotely watched / heard the whole time and you simply ask to be let out. You’re in control. Nothing like a lift, crowded shop, MRI machine, caving etc!

No I have not been drinking and if I had it wouldn’t be wine. Not everyone drinks wine.

I drink wine. I also speak a little French and German. I hated Paris though, but I don't mind escape rooms. I hope that helps.

My daughter was learning Latin at one point. Although in school she did Spanish. I don’t think she’s carrying on with it though.

I voted YANBU because nobody should do anything they don't want to do. However your Paris link makes absolutely no sense!

Interesting. I'll have to put my French expertise to the test when I visit Germany.

I think this thread may end up in Mumnet classics purely on the strength of its non-sequiturs.

What the heck has learning German at school got to do with an escape room?

Yes this, and Paris.

If you don’t want to go, don’t, although the ones I’ve been to, you don’t actually get locked in.

Probably best to test it that way round!

Biscuitsneeded · 20/06/2025 23:45

But no OP, they don't lock you in. I reckon it might be one of those things you have to try to see if you enjoy it.

sorry OP but this update is bananas 😂😂😂

YinYangalang · 20/06/2025 23:46

Don’t watch the horror film about escape rooms!

I agree escape rooms are just boring. Work tried to force one on us as team building. We all declined.

That was in relation to my post about bilingual Brits. She went to a catholic school.

I've always said that people who don't like escape rooms would also not like Paris..... It's such an obvious link

This made me laugh so much 🤣

I'll ask a poor unsuspecting German WWII war veteran, voulez vous coucher avec moi.

CtrlAltDlt · 20/06/2025 23:50

Don't do it then. I did one with my old work and it was v shit and dull. But then I hated everyone I worked with, at that job, so being locked up with them was always going to be rubbish.

StampOnTheGround · 20/06/2025 23:52

This has had me actually laughing out loud 😂😂

But in all seriousness OP, escape rooms are good fun and you can always get out! Some rooms are much bigger than others, I once did one in a massive court room which would probably suit you! 😊 equally if you don’t want to do one, just say no!

I cannot see any link, please explain.

Zov · 20/06/2025 23:53

I don't get the Paris and Germany link! But as someone who suffers from claustrophobia, I would NOT go into an escape room!
