To think DS should park further away?

Honestly I know this is minor but AIBU isn't just for the big stuff.

We live in a semi detached with a drive we can't use.

There's plenty of unrestricted parking on our street and the adjoining street. The only time it gets busy in our area is glorious sunny days and Park Run time.

There is enough space outside our house and next door's house for 3 cars to easily park between the two dropped kerbs. Next door has a large drive that they park one or two cars on.

There's a convention that they park one of their cars outside their house leaving 2 spaces for 2 of our cars.

So DH and I prefer to leave our cars there, visible from sitting room window.

DS has tended to park into one of these gaps if they're empty when he pulls up, but I think he should park a smidge further away and leave the old folk to have a shorter walk to the front door.

I've had a minor word with him but I think he's thoughtless on occasion and soon goes back to pulling into the nearest parking space.

Aibu to think he should defer to us?

Why can’t you use the drive or DS use the drive?

Helpmeplease2025 · 19/06/2025 13:03

Why aren’t you using your drive?

OvergrownHaha · 19/06/2025 13:04

Thisxall sounds mad. Why can’t you use your drive?

OvergrownHaha · 19/06/2025 13:05

And why does it matter whether your neighbours park on the street or their drive?

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 19/06/2025 13:05

Anyone could park there, so YABU.

AMillionTomorrows · 19/06/2025 13:07

Diagram or what’s even the point of anything in this life?

Shedmistress · 19/06/2025 13:07

Why can't you use your drive?

comeandhaveteawithme · 19/06/2025 13:07

We need more details. Why can't your drive be used? Is your DS paying his full share of bills or living with you cheaply or for free? is he able bodied? are you?

Also a diagram, please. Mumsnet loves a diagram

Jojimoji · 19/06/2025 13:08

"Bob Junior, I know I've asked you before, but maybe I didn't explain myself well, could you just make sure you park a bit further up the street when you come, as me and Bob Senior prefer to park right outside. Thanks son. Really appreciate it as we're getting on a bit now"

mondaytosunday · 19/06/2025 13:08

I hate when people get precious about parking directly outside their house on a public street. But as it’s your son, sure you can remind him to park further away. But it’s healthier for you to walk a bit further frankly.

Redpeach · 19/06/2025 13:09

Depends how old the oldies are, walking is good exercise

ErrolTheDragon · 19/06/2025 13:10

Assuming you and your DH actually are old and infirm, then YANBU. Otoh of you’re capable of walking a few yards more then it won’t harm you to do so.
I’d say priority should be for whoever is more likely to be carrying shopping etc.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 19/06/2025 13:12

Do you have mobility restrictions or are you just lazy?

DaisyChain505 · 19/06/2025 13:13

Why can’t you use your drive?

YABU, you don’t own the road. It is free for anyone to park anywhere.

I have two elderly couples who live on my road, they both have drives that fit three cars easily yet don’t use them and park on the road outside their house and leave notes on anyone’s car who dares park there even though its not permit and is free for anyone to use.

There are much bigger issues in the world rather than worrying where your car is parked.

Totallynootella · 19/06/2025 13:14

Does it matter why the drive can't be used? Confused

Slobberchops1 · 19/06/2025 13:15

Don’t be a dick , it’s a public road anyone can park there , it would help if you didn’t take up so many spaces and used your drive

Does it matter why the drive can't be used? Confused

Yes, if it's another example of you being awkward and entitled then it builds a picture.

Does it matter why the drive can't be used? Confused

Yes, if it’s cos you have a skip on it fair enough, if there’s a wall so no entry on to the drive then ok, if it’s just because you don’t like to use it or aren’t confident in pulling on it then that makes a difference

Does it matter why the drive can't be used? Confused

Yes. You'll get different opinions if
(a) the drive can't be used because the tarmac is so broken it's unusable, or
(b) the drive is kept clear for your other child, who you consider more worthy of easy parking.

Does it matter why the drive can't be used? Confused

No, but it was inevitable that some people would be more interested in that than in what you asked.
I’m assuming it contains the entrance to a wormhole to another dimension, rather than any of the many banal and boring reasons.

ByJoyousBiscuit · 19/06/2025 13:22

It's between you and him, not sure why he would want to specifically piss his ow parents off.

If my mum was asking me not to park somewhere, I'd roll my eyes but would park further.

MsTamborineMan · 19/06/2025 13:23

To be honest if you have mobility issues that mean you need to park close to your house, it would be better for you to make your drive usable

Everyone Is entitled to park on the road. Both you and next door have driveways. Next door has space for 2 vehicles on their drive so again if they have mobility issues they can use that. No ones entitled to park a 3rd car outside their house on a public road

Does it matter why the drive can't be used? Confused

It is probably the most important aspect of the whole thing.

TheNightingalesStarling · 19/06/2025 13:36

Is there a reason for this, or just "respect your elders"?

(Our parking priority is based on the value of each vehicle in our household!)

Does it matter why the drive can't be used? Confused

Of course it matters.

Your cars should be on the drive that is available not blocking the road.

Your son isn't the issue here
