To think DS should park further away?

Honestly I know this is minor but AIBU isn't just for the big stuff.

We live in a semi detached with a drive we can't use.

There's plenty of unrestricted parking on our street and the adjoining street. The only time it gets busy in our area is glorious sunny days and Park Run time.

There is enough space outside our house and next door's house for 3 cars to easily park between the two dropped kerbs. Next door has a large drive that they park one or two cars on.

There's a convention that they park one of their cars outside their house leaving 2 spaces for 2 of our cars.

So DH and I prefer to leave our cars there, visible from sitting room window.

DS has tended to park into one of these gaps if they're empty when he pulls up, but I think he should park a smidge further away and leave the old folk to have a shorter walk to the front door.

I've had a minor word with him but I think he's thoughtless on occasion and soon goes back to pulling into the nearest parking space.

Aibu to think he should defer to us?

The drive is a shared drive with next door. It's in the deeds it's access only to our garages at rear of properties.

Personally, I would park to make my dps lives easier out of respect, but when I was growing up we parked 4 cars on a single file drive so parking was a military operation and depended on who was last in, first out where people parked

Does it matter why the drive can't be used? Confused

Of course it does, if your entire problem with your son’s parking is because the ‘old folk’ are struggling to make it to the front door. Park on your drive and you’ll have fewer feeble, tottering steps to take.

Totallynootella · 19/06/2025 13:38

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 19/06/2025 13:37

Of course it matters.

Your cars should be on the drive that is available not blocking the road.

Your son isn't the issue here

I've said we can't use the drive, that means it's not available.

Why are we blocking the road? Not being snippy, genuine curious as to why.

Why don't the elderly or mobility challenged neighbours use their drives?

Totallynootella · 19/06/2025 13:41

I think yes it more about the carrying the shopping, popping the dogs in the car etc etc.

It just makes it marginally more convenient for me. He rarely carries anything more than gym kit or work rucksack to the car.

And DH's car is probably safer outside our front window as there's been theft attempts on it previously.

LlynTegid · 19/06/2025 13:41

Agree that why the drive cannot be used has relevance. If it is because you are incapable of manouvreing an SUV into it then you should not have one, if it is because of a rare plant nearby, understandable, for example.

You've not got a drive then have you, you've got an access road.

So you don’t have a drive then? That’s not the same as having a drive but it being unusable. People think that it’s selfish to take up on road parking when you have a drive. I think your son should not pinch your preferred space if you’ve specifically asked him not to.

I've said we can't use the drive, that means it's not available.

Your mistake here was mentioning a ‘drive’, what you have is from your subsequent description clearly irrelevant to parking.
I expect I’ll have cross posted with someone demanding that you should clear out the garage you mentioned and put a car in there.😂

MsTamborineMan · 19/06/2025 13:23

To be honest if you have mobility issues that mean you need to park close to your house, it would be better for you to make your drive usable

Everyone Is entitled to park on the road. Both you and next door have driveways. Next door has space for 2 vehicles on their drive so again if they have mobility issues they can use that. No ones entitled to park a 3rd car outside their house on a public road

Everyone is entitled to park on a public road?

Neighbour have 3 or 4 cars depending on whether adult child is staying or not.

They park 2 cars on their drive and one car in from of their front garden.

Why mention a drive when you clearly have an access route, not a drive.

Do the garages have parking spaces in front of them? If so, use them.

The neighbours are allowed to park on their drive, but you aren’t?

Bloddy heck yes, that's a much better way of viewing it!

It's just it looks like a duck, but isn't a duck, I guess 😂

@Totallynootella Um! yes. You've asked a question. A proper reply needs all the facts really. Might be able to suggest ways of using the drive, if we know why you can't use it?

"Everyone is entitled to park on a public road" 😂😂😂

Worth considering in light of your OP

TeenLifeMum · 19/06/2025 13:49

First come, first served when it comes to parking. Get the drive into a useable state and you’ll be sorted.

Seeline · 19/06/2025 13:49

Does your Ds live with you or is he visiting?
So your house has 3 cars and no off street parking?

Either way, if the space outside your house is available, I can't see why he shouldn't park there. If he doesn't, someone else is likely too, and they might stay for ages.

DelphiniumBlue · 19/06/2025 13:49

What about the garage that you need to keep the access way clear for? Who parks there?

Silvers11 · 19/06/2025 13:51

So read your further update @Totallynootella . Didn't see it when I made my last post. So can someone not park in front of your own Garage?

ThatCalmCat · 19/06/2025 13:51

If the issue is the times when you've been shopping or need to carry stuff in, ask your son to fetch the bags from wherever you've parked your car, if he refuses, then ask him to move his car so you can do it yourself? He'll soon understand, surely?
