So the bin men broke our bin. Just gobbled the lid. Hardly that deep.

Rung the council to request a new lid. Nope, don’t do them. Ok.
New bin.. yes but we can only give you a 140L skinny bin (previously a normal size 240L).
We said sorry that won’t work for us. Don’t worry we will buy a bin.
We are not allowed to buy a bin.

Much confusion. Multiple calls. All jobsworths. Stalk the street. Many an unbranded bin so I think we will be fine. Buy a bin. But ours is shiny.

I have thought about rubbing mud on it but then that’s not nice for the bin men so shiny it is.

Will they take it? Big mystery.

And if not then I have no idea what we are supposed to do. But I will worry about tomorrow.

I just had to google ‘shiny bin’ because I started reading this thread this morning and I had to know the outcome.

First hit on google thankfully.

All Hail Shiny Bin.

Really! Wow.

The tales and trials of shiny bin and the UKs insane waste lottery will live on 💪

Our big bin was also traded against our will. We do ok now. We started recycling soft plastics and it made a big difference. Have to take them to supermarkets though.

Our council does a separate nappy / hygiene collection though. I assumed they all would!

I couldn’t cope!

I barely do! I don't drive but thankfully my auntie does & can take me to the local tip as much as I need. 🤣

HevenlyMeS · 19/06/2025 17:51

Thank you immensely for your enlightenments
£20 is slightly expensive for a bin lid
It's helpful to know for those whom can afford
God Bless You&Yours for your compassionate Thoughtfulness

18 pages! I can't believe how invested we all are in the fate of one bin 😁. Anyway, glad it was collected. I think we've all experienced that 'computer says no' madness at some point.

SunnyCoco · 19/06/2025 17:59

Argh we have one 140l skinny bin and it's only collected once every 3 weeks

Well jel about all these fat bins still going strong, let alone collections more than once in a blue moon!

Bluebrain · 19/06/2025 18:10

When I was a lad 1950s in Northampton we had 2 yes two collections per week.

Efrogwraig · 19/06/2025 19:33

If no joy, speak to your local cllr & get them to sort it for you

TimeForATerf · 19/06/2025 20:04

Meh, complain to your MP that the refuse contractor broke your bin and won’t replace or repair.Threaten to raise it with your local rag if the MP won’t look into it, make a bloody nuisance of yourself. I hate councils.

MissConductUS · 19/06/2025 20:06

I’m an American. I mentioned on another thread that I get three bin collections a week, household rubbish on Tuesday, paper recycling on Wednesday, and glass and plastic recycling on Thursday. People went mad with envy, and I now understand why. 😀

We buy our own bins. They can’t exceed a maximum size, but you can have as many as you need. And we have a “bulk pickup day” once a month when they’ll take old furniture and other large items.

ADarknessOfDragons · 19/06/2025 20:19

MauriceTheMussel · 18/06/2025 22:34

Your council sound awful! Ours come every week for black bag waste and recycling. The nice man waves at me, pulls out all our bags from a big ass bin and puts them in his own bin to take to the lorry. If they miss a collection/your house, you log it with the council and someone shows up 48 hours later

And we don’t have any of this “the lid must close or else we don’t take it wall nonsense

Maurice, we need to know what council you are now!

We are ALL getting soft plastic recycling from 2027 apparently!

Yeay!

And what is the cost of this?

Funny how everyone else manages with a skinny bin! Do you not recycle or something?

Our collection is once a fortnight and we would never manage with a skinny bin for a family of 4. Sometimes after Xmas etc we barely make it and the bin is extra full. And yes, we do recycle.

MissConductUS · 19/06/2025 20:29

RedToothBrush · 19/06/2025 20:23

And what is the cost of this?

It’s included in my property taxes, just like policing, fire protection, schools, parks, etc.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 19/06/2025 20:59

We have four bins. A blue one for paper and card, a brown one for bottles and cans, a green one for food waste and garden stuff which I have to pay for and a black one for everything else.
Life has never been the same since our street binfluencer moved...it's so much effort now.

Remembering which bins on which week....

Isthisreasonable · 19/06/2025 21:45

Our binmen managed to put a huge crack in the lid of our green bin. Assume the bin wasn't in the right place and got hit by the lifting mechanism.

They wouldn't replace it and I wasn't forking out for a new one. Everytime it rains the bin starts filling with water so the bin lorry is treated to a drink on a regular basis. Still gets collected though.

Wow. That's fab

It's supposed to be included in ours.

We pay extra for a green bin.

Wait until you hear how much property taxes over there can be!

In RI at least, it’s like tens of thousands of dollars a year

ADarknessOfDragons · 19/06/2025 20:19

Maurice, we need to know what council you are now!

Tis a London one!

AND we get given a load of massive garden waste bags (like what those blue Ikea ones are made from) and you just fill them when you feel like it, leave it on the street, and when the guys in the correct van happen to drive past, they pick it up and return your bags there and then!

MissConductUS · 19/06/2025 22:40

How is the green bin different from the others?

UndermyShoeJoe · 19/06/2025 22:44

We pay extra for our garden bin which the council turn into compost and then try to sell back to us. It’s rubbish compost too.

I don’t live in Rhode Island. It’s a bit odd that you picked the smallest state in the country as an example.

Even within states, property taxes vary widely by location. They’re also based on the value of the property, and commercial property is taxed at higher rates than residential property. So your example might be true for a mansion in a posh area, but not an ordinary house.

I love that there are so many experts on life in the US on Mumsnet.

MauriceTheMussel · 19/06/2025 22:51

I picked it as I used to live in Providence is all

I also said “can be”, “at least”, and never held myself out as an expert. Don’t get the snippy tone used tbh. It’s a thread about bins…

I see. Providence is a lovely city. I hope you enjoyed your time there.
