So the bin men broke our bin. Just gobbled the lid. Hardly that deep.

Rung the council to request a new lid. Nope, don’t do them. Ok.
New bin.. yes but we can only give you a 140L skinny bin (previously a normal size 240L).
We said sorry that won’t work for us. Don’t worry we will buy a bin.
We are not allowed to buy a bin.

Much confusion. Multiple calls. All jobsworths. Stalk the street. Many an unbranded bin so I think we will be fine. Buy a bin. But ours is shiny.

I have thought about rubbing mud on it but then that’s not nice for the bin men so shiny it is.

Will they take it? Big mystery.

And if not then I have no idea what we are supposed to do. But I will worry about tomorrow.

Well we do, but that's 2 half full big bin liners going to landfill. When I buy a smaller bin, it will be 2 small bin liners so less plastic @AmelieSummer25

You'd need hundreds & thousands of extra bin liners to make up for the materials & production of a new bin!

BitOutOfPractice · 19/06/2025 11:04

I’ve popped back to mn purely to see if it’s a shiny bin win. And yes! Shiny bin is the winner. Congratulations @Anonbindrama

Funny how everyone else manages with a skinny bin! Do you not recycle or something?

Do they?

In our county 140l is described as suitable for those living alone or a couple with low waste creation.

180l is standard and 240l is for properties with 4 or more people/2 dc in nappies/other medical needs.

we fill ours as well as having an additional recycling bag for tins and plastic.

I don't think it's outrageous if the council has a good recycling scheme where the bulk of rubbish is recycled, and food waste is separate from general waste. There's very little in the way of packaging etc that isn't recyclable where I live.

The only stuff that goes in the general waste here is soft plastic, expanded polystyrene packaging (which breaks up small), plastic lids and sanpro/nappies. Even tin foil and foil containers are recycled.

I live in one of the top performing councils for recycling and every family in the area still struggles with a bi weekly collection of landfill. One bag a week? For a single person, sure. For families of 5 or 6? Impossible and yes, outrageous.

SlenderRations · 19/06/2025 11:12

Am feeling very shifty. Council issues mixed revoking bags. Two collections a week of everything. Unlimited quantities, empties wheelies, takes any bags, stacks of boxes etc. I truly can’t imagine how it works for the majority of commentators on here. We clearly are quite disgusting in our rubbish generation…..

femfemlicious · 19/06/2025 11:12

Anonbindrama · 18/06/2025 22:01

Everyone on the street and surrounding streets has the normal 240L bin.

A skinny bin only takes two black bags apparently. It’s collected every 2 weeks.

We do recycle as much as we can; over the capacity of a 240L bin - we always have a lag building up. We have two children in nappies. I am not sure how we are supposed to go from a jammed 240L bin to a 140.

Yes those skinny bins are ridiculous for a family . They have them in my area and people dump rubbish everywhere 🙄

Anonbindrama · 19/06/2025 11:16

HatsOffToThePigeons · 19/06/2025 08:31

That's exactly it. We moved from an area with a very comprehensive recycling programme where we never filled our bin to one where they recycle almost nothing and we're really struggling with our bin (we do have nappies to deal with) while the poor massive green bin sits less than half full every fortnight because it only takes card and glass (and we don't drink).

This is fascinating. It’s like the part of life which no one knows about. Our rubbish! I too am not understanding that either.

We are a normal family, eat normal amounts, are very tight on our throw away wastage on food due to meal planning.

We recycle a full 240l + every 2 weeks.

And thats with me stealing all cardboard boxes shapes for vinted.

So I don’t get it either? Perhaps we are not compressing much. But I consider that quite dangerous with general waste. The rubbish is the same whether we compress or not.

😅 I am so bloody relieved

When you were young would you ever have imagined you would be so invested in bins. Being a grown up sucks😂

RoseHedgehogs · 19/06/2025 11:26

Congrats on the bin collection!

A boring tip but we started separating our soft plastics for recycling (food packets, bread bags, etc etc etc) and taking them to the supermarket to be recycled. Our normal waste is tiny now, the bin is practically empty when collected!

OK... what do you mean by 'not compressing much...quite dangerous with general waste'? I am now concerned that I am creating hazardous general waste by compressing too much?! Why is it dangerous, what have I missed?!

eurochick · 19/06/2025 11:33

We are on I think our third food waste bin this year. The bastard squirrels keep chewing through the lids and then spreading food waste everywhere.

We have tried armour plating it with metal mesh but they manage to rip it off. They are very determined little squirrelly bastards.

And with each passing collection he’ll be less and less shiny and more and more business as usual.
well done OP.
I need to work on the lurch of excitement when I got a notification that the OP had updated this thread, totally over invested 😆

No I mean if something is dangerous or broken it goes in general for us. Say a broken glass, a bent knife, random nail - no idea really until these things arise but it’s often enough to be atleast every 2 weeks. So whilst we happily jump in the recycling bin and jump up and down. We don’t do any compressing of general except using the lid as a rammer and trying to haphazardly squash it.

Yay, win for shiny bin!🥳

Grinning here at the different bins described - shiny bins, skinny bins, fat bins, camouflaged bins, bins with pretty flowers, glow in the dark stickers. Bins that are lovingly treated like members of the family. They seem to have their own little characters and I think they all need names now 😁

chaosmaker · 19/06/2025 11:54

soft plastics are taken at most big supermarkets. So even less stuff in your bin.

Here is weekly food waste and as much recycling as you want to put out. 3 weekly bin bag and bookings for garden waste. Also nappy bag collections but can't remember how often - probably weekly

Envious of the councils that take textiles and small electricals.

Here, nappies are collected separately, along with other types of "absorbent waste."
Black rubbish bags are collected every three weeks. All recyclable materials collected weekly. It works fine for us.

Some councils work much better than others. Many UK councils are seriously lacking, allowing a lot of recyclable items to go in general rubbish.

If they don't have the machinery (& can't afford to bury it. It's not exactly cheap!!) what do you think they should do??

ours don't take a lot of stuff that says 'recyclable' because they don't have the plant to deal with it.

The fact that another council has, doesn't change the fact that ours doesn't.its a shame, but that's life. You can't afford everything!

Bunnycat101 · 19/06/2025 11:57

We have an extra recycling bin which works most of the time to mean our 2 weekly rubbish collection is fine (not a skinny bin but normal one). We’re struggling at the moment due to a combination of parties and building work. Can’t wait for the next recycling round as we can’t fit anymore in. Only other time we struggle re recycling bin capacity is at Christmas. I’d love an extra recycling collection in December.

chaosmaker · 19/06/2025 11:57

It's a service that everyone needs though, unlike other things we all pay for that are council services.

Anonbindrama · 19/06/2025 11:58

As things generally descend to be worse over time I am now wondering whether even though shiny bin has won this battle; whether this is a premature win in a war.

And whether I should try to claim a proper official decent sized bin whilst the kids are both in nappies. Then I have it for prosperity and my paid bin I can take to the allotment to harvest water. 🤔
