Hot weather.

Anyone else just want this hot weather to fuck right off? I've had enough of it already and apparently we're in for at least another 2 weeks of it. 🤬 I'm made out to be a killjoy when I say I'm not enjoying it. Does everyone else really love it,or are they just saying it for fear of being thought odd (like me!).

I like warm weather as well. But it's not warm at the moment, it's intense heat that can kill the elderly and vulnerable.

People always mention the elderly like they're incapable of looking after themselves and are too stupid to understand hot weather. It's patronising.

My elderly parents were out having a picnic yesterday, they choose shady spots. They take their picnic table and some chairs, slap on the suncream and a hat and enjoy a lovely homemade picnic. Many other elderly people regularly holiday in hot countries.

I'm more concerned about my cats than I am about my elderly parents who are intelligent enough to understand how to cope in hot weather, whereas my cats walk around in a thick fur coat all year round.

Vates · 20/06/2025 06:35

I cannot stand it, have been a summer hater since I was 16. Up until that age I just put up with it and didn't moan. But these days it makes me feel sick. I also worry about a relative that has angina and other chronic health conditions, she is a very positive person but it does really harm her when it's too hot.

I got heat exhaustion a couple of summers ago and was physically (violently!) sick and it was horrendous. I try my best to follow advice for staying cool but am mostly miserable. Spring, Autumn and Winter I absolutely adore!

no need to be a bitch about it I’m replying to the OP who specifically made the post about herself and her views not about the vulnerable in society.

Do t be a bitch yourself then

Often the elderly carnt look after themselves, my relatives with dementia and Alzheimer's certainly carnt.

i agree my mum is 80 and had her roof down on her car yesterday, not everyone who is old has lost all commons sense.

Jesus having dementia or Alzheimer's is not a case of losing common sense. Some posters really disgust me.

Lovesacake · 20/06/2025 07:11

The hot weather is just shit.

GentleSheep · 20/06/2025 07:16

Was dismayed this morning to see the outside temperature is only 2 degrees lower than indoors! So much for cooling the house down for a while.

Great, what about the elderly who are more vulnerable who carnt afford Aircon? Oh but you have your Pimm's everything's fine 🙄 some people just don't live in reality.

"Great, what about the elderly who are more vulnerable who can't afford heating in winter? Oh but you have your cosy blanket everything's fine 🙄 some people just don't live in reality." is what I would like to respond to posters who eulogise about winter.

Yes, it is going to be hot today and tomorrow then it is going to cool down to more comfortable temperatures then maybe you can calm down.

only to you ha ha

To be fair, I also read it as excitement at the weather breaking.

Then help them?

My dad is 72 and has been told to avoid the heat, so he is. It’s not exactly 50 degrees and a genuine threat to life, is it? It’s 35 max. For two days.

Mokel · 20/06/2025 07:38

@xSideshowAuntSallyXx There are some elderly who don’t have a clue about what to do in hot weather.

Wearing coats then collapse with heat exhaustion. My friend works for a shop and has seen about 8 elderly people who were wearing coats in this weather (over the past few years) fainted or complained about feeling unwell. Would they have collapsed if didn’t wear a coat? Probably not.

DM’s friend came to her mum’s to drop off her prescriptions. She felt very hot in her mum’s bungalow. Touched a radiator and it was on.
“Mum do you realise that you have your heating on?”
”I didn’t know it was on. I am feeling hot with my cardi on”

Mokel · 20/06/2025 07:43

Had hospital appointments before in this heat. They were booked months before. I sigh when see the weather on the day before the appointment

Sit in the waiting area and the heaters are ON! Sometimes there are windows to open but very small which make no difference in opening them. Or a couple of departments don’t have any windows in the waiting area. Couldn’t see a switch.

Why are these heaters on? How much money is NHS wasting from having heating on in the hot weather?

JacquesHarlow · 20/06/2025 07:48

As I said on page 2 of this thread, what is the correlation between weight and heat?

So many people in this country complain when the heat comes, because they have built themselves for winter

Summer is not just a state of mind, its mind + body. The latter seems to escape people until it is too late and the heat is here..

If someone has dementia or Alzheimer's they should have someone else looking out for them. Presumably they are just as vulnerable in the middle of winter?

Get over yourself.

It's fascinating how, on MN, a simple discussion about weather turns into a battleground (like most other subjects on here!).

I'm in the 'I hate the heat' camp. What seems to being missed (apologies if I've just not seen it elsewhere) is that, while cold weather can be very uncomfortable and annoying, those of us who are susceptible to heat don't just feel hot, sticky, flushed, tired and headachy - we actually feel properly ill.

I am a perfectly fit, normal-sized woman in my sixties. I exercise. I neither smoke nor drink. I'm vegetarian. And yet anything above about 24C makes me feel truly unwell. I can't breathe properly. My eyes hurt - every little movement, despite using prescribed ointment. I can't sleep more than a couple of hours. My legs feel like lead; just getting up from my desk to cross the room exhausts me. I feel nauseous. If I make myself eat I get appalling indigestion - it's as though my system shuts down in the heat.

So please don't think we're just moaning. It's honestly entirely horrible for some of us.

I just find it irritating that so many of these posters seem to believe that the UK is hotter than other places, more humid than anywhere else, and that every other country where the temperature gets above 25 degrees is apparently "set up for the heat".

In real life I have never actually met a person who cannot tolerate heat - yet MN is full of them.

Absolutely love it (apart from all the watering). We have enough dark, wet cold. Love summer.

That's poor community support though. We do have summer every year, after all.

We got told off for wearing T-shirts under our shirts in the winter.

Mobile classrooms are the worst! Greenhouses in hot weather and in winter, ice boxes. They are those things where schools said they were going to have them for 5 years and they are there for 40!

My old primary school finally got rid of their mobile classrooms ten years ago (been there since 1968) . Then my high school about 7 years ago. The school used to be on two sites so 4 subjects were done in mobile classrooms - I was part of the last intake of schools being on both sites. This was 1993. Friend’s DD was the last intake of the mobile classrooms in 2015

And the NHS uniform is man made fabric, no variation allowed. We have to wear trousers and socks or dresses and tights and full shoes with both, no pumps or sandals.
Most areas of hospitals aren't air-conditioned and lots of clinical areas have windows that don't open or only a crack (so people can't climb out)
Nevertheless I'll suck it up for days like today and tomorrow when fortunately I'm off from lunchtime today.

gingercat02 · 20/06/2025 08:14

I have all the windows and doors open, blinds and curtains closed at the back where the sun is. It's beautifully cool currently. DH is unde strict instructions to start closing up as the sun moves.

I know people who don't tolerate very hot weather very well, but they don't bleat on about it like mumsnetters do. They take sensible precautions like staying in the shade, wearing loose clothing, drinking plenty etc.

oldmoaner · 20/06/2025 08:26

I hate it, I live in a new build and once it gets hot can't cool it down, even through the night it's been 27.00 degrees. 20 suits me fine but above that I suffer and can't sleep. Windows open but not even a breeze.

GrammarTeacher · 20/06/2025 08:37

All the people saying it’s fabulous need to try teaching for a day in a poorly ventilated room with 32 teenagers. It’s awful. We’re not even a school that makes them wear their blazers but there’s still some who insist. I’d rather be in Florida in August than in my school right now in terms of heat.
