to find that ChatGPT is saving me tons of time at work?

I have so much more work-life balance now thanks to ChatGPT that is making mincemeat of the mundane parts of the job. It will proof read, put together emails, produce critiques, minutes and actions points, analyse finances all in the matter of seconds and much more.

Work was done by 2pm so I had a lovely afternoon in the sun because all my tasks got completed so quickly.

And no, AI can't take over my job completely as it involves critical face to face interaction and other specialist skills which AI cannot do.

What you asking?

Jane958 · 16/06/2025 19:08

Seriously?
Did you check everything meticulously?
AI lies and is inaccurate.

TheSmallAssassin · 16/06/2025 19:22

Are you using the free version? What's your work policy on using AI? We're only allowed to use MS Copilot as it's ring fenced to our organisation, so information can't leak out.

Edited

Yes there is the odd mistake but I check it over first

Using the paid version. Work is fine with it being used.

Same here. Gross disciplinary for using non ring fenced versions as otherwise we teach AI out business confidential documents

Yea I bet they are!

People sleep walking into making themselves redundant. If AI can save you so much time, do they really need you/need you full time?

Sofasoft · 16/06/2025 19:27

I agree it can be a great time saving asset, even if i do have to check/change things to produce a final version it can create a great first draft very quickly.

I do worry about the jobs aspect though because even if it can "only" help, rather than do your whole job, if it's saving loads of time, it will reduce the number of people needed to do the job. E.g 3 jobs could be amalgamated to 2. I'm sure that will happen over time, but I guess enjoy it while it lasts.

Gnarab24 · 16/06/2025 19:27

I’m growing increasing suspicious of all the ‘ain’t AI just the cats pyjamas’ posts on MN.

isitmeamithedrama · 16/06/2025 19:28

I’d be extremely careful. It’s highly inaccurate a lot of the time resulting in someone I know getting a promotion revoked, a warning and their reputation is in bits.
plus if its doing the work then you are in fact redundant and your employee could theoretically save themselves a salary by getting rid of you!

Already explained in my OP why that will not happen!

Not much use in my job as I need to report on what I see.

The more generic reporting I've tried to use it for, but reading it back, much of it makes no sense. Kind of lots of words that didn't say anything iyswim!

It will happen. They might still need some "expert" human input, but if AI (or any machine really) can do some of the donkey work, they'll need fewer people.

brawhen · 16/06/2025 19:34

I am mostly failing to get it to save me any time. Could not get chat GPT or copilot to put a pdf in to OneNote or word for me with any sensible formatting, despite 'investing' an hour in prompt honing. Could not get it to produce a sensible draft project timeline laid out in Excel. This should be straightforward. Cannot get sensible meeting minutes when we are using any kind of industry acronyms, internal references, or people on the call with non-us/uk accents.

I have had success with first drafts of company policies & similar.

I have seen some really shit AI CVs and also 'requirements documents' come in from clients, where the client obviously has no clue about what/why is in the doc when we start to discuss it with them.

I am underwhelmed.

I use industry acronyms too and have many people across the world with different accents taking part in meetings. It picked up all the detail and minuted everything beautifully. Even I couldn't tell what people were saying at times 😂

People have started sending me emails that were clearly written by AI. I delete them unread. I wish they would just send me the information that they typed into the AI and save me the hassle of reading the long version.

Yes agree with this. I used it to write a covering letter example just to give myself ideas really. The original was somehow both generic and overly flowery simultaneously.

Tbh it was only a matter of time. Our physical work has been mechanised (self checkouts etc) and now our mental work. Unfortunately because of competition and capitalism it won't make our lives any easier, we'll just be expected to produce more in the same time.

MargotTenenbaumscoat · 16/06/2025 19:39

What do you do?

Not having a go but genuinely curious. Do you get paid hourly or per task? You said that your employer was on board but do they not want you to use that time for something else? I’ve never had an employer that says, ‘you’ve done everything, go chill’.

Yes, we have it too and I don’t believe it won’t replace humans at some point.

Then how do you know that it isn't making shit up, and saying people said it, as it has a reputation for doing?

I heard that it now hallucinates 48% of the time when summarising stuff.

I love AI. I tried Gemini Pro for the first time today and it blew my mind compared to chatgpt.

user1471453601 · 16/06/2025 19:48

It seems to me that it's ok for some factual things, but things that require a judgement to be made, it's less useful and may even be harmful.

It scares me that some people seem to be using it as a "friend" or even as a "councillor".

AI is designed using algorithms. It wants you to come back and use it again. The saying that if something is free, then you are the product it's trying to sell, has never been more true.
