To have called DH out for hogging the middle lane

Buildaaargh · 15/06/2025 20:31

DH habitually sits in the middle lane when motorway driving and I find it deeply annoying. He says he doesn’t like being on the inside lane as it limits his options but I find it really inconsiderate. This weekend we did a long drive and I pointed out a couple of times when he was doing it.

He said he doesn’t criticise my driving (not entirely accurate) and I shouldn’t criticise his. I get that it’s annoying to have someone pick up on how you’re doing something, but I find it deeply selfish.

YABU - none of your business how he chooses to drive
YANBU - totally fair enough to say something

It's more than annoying, it's very dangerous. He sounds like a very selfish person with no self awareness.

Springadorable · 15/06/2025 20:34

If you've said it once, and he's ignored it, then probably best if you do the motorway drives.

Sunshineandblueskysalltheway · 15/06/2025 20:34

Dangerous and ill informed. How can he not know you're not supposed to do that?

This ^^

Except the OP says she 'pointed it out a couple of times'.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 15/06/2025 20:36

I think you can even get points for doing this? It's an overtaking lane and if he's not confident enough to drive properly on a motorway, he should get specific lessons before driving on one again

SabbatWheel · 15/06/2025 20:37

Depends. With all-lane running these days it is very common to have traffic running at similar speeds across all four lanes when busy. In this case, not a problem.

Largely clear mway with lane 1 quiet? Move over!

VivaVivaa · 15/06/2025 20:38

Urgh. Can you please ask him how driving legally ‘limits his options’?

I think you were right to tell him. What he does now though is I suppose up to him.

It’s fine to drive in any lane for a period of time as long as you’re overtaking the lane to the left of you. Once it’s clear to the left you need to move over.

FortyElephants · 15/06/2025 20:39

Middle lane hoggers are shit drivers. I bet he wouldn't do it with another man in the car 🙄

LubeyTuesday · 15/06/2025 20:39

It gives everyone driving behind him fewer and more dangerous options.

Yep - I do end up doing most of the motorways (which I don’t mind doing) and after a moderately spirited discussion about his lane hogging we swapped back to me driving.

Totally with you OP
It is selfish, inconsiderate behaviour to hog the middle lane.

Really, really gets my goat.
They don't want the inconvenience of overtaking, so hog the middle forcing the rest of us to overtake more often.
Bloody dangerous.

HolidayHattie · 15/06/2025 20:41

It's illegal. He could get 3 points and a fine, if caught.

EXACTLY! Can’t stand it

If I made road traffic law and it was enforced your DH would be banned from driving for a long period. And I would have a lot of support.

Good on you for objecting, others have explained why it is an awful habit.

TheHateIsNotGood · 15/06/2025 20:45

I always wondered who those middle lane hoggers were and OP has given me one. Way back I pulled up an American boyfriend on the very same thing as he steadfastly stayed at 65-70 in the middle lane because he was keeping to the speed limit and so should everyone else.

Although his visiting parents were in the car I told him you're not the police so pull in to the slow lane or I drive now.

We had a lovely trip to Scotland but Dear Reader, we did not marry.

Couldyounot · 15/06/2025 20:47

He says he doesn’t like being on the inside lane as it limits his options

What I suspect he actually means is that he doesn’t like being on the inside lane as he's rubbish at motorways and doesn't know how to use his mirrors.

Does he also hang around in the outside lane on A-roads because he might need to turn right at a roundabout in about 4 miles' time, by any chance? We get a lot of that where I live.

Delatron · 15/06/2025 20:47

Yeah YANBU it’s so annoying. I pointed out my DH was doing it and he didn’t like it. Then I pointed out he didn’t indicate (basic driving) and he got really arsey and said if I didn’t like it I could drive etc etc. Ridiculous.

Neveranynamesleft · 15/06/2025 20:49

Please come back soon and tell us when he gets pulled over for being a dangerous driver.

CantStopMoving · 15/06/2025 20:51

he might think it is ok but it is traffic offence which he can receive points. Does he think doing 40 in a 20 is ok? If people aren’t confident changing lanes on a motorway they shouldn’t be driving there.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 15/06/2025 20:52

He sounds like a very selfish man. I don't think I could be with someone who dismisses my opinion and behaves in such a reckless manner. Do he contribute towards childcare?

The most Mumsnet post ever.

Oodlesof · 15/06/2025 21:15

How fast was he going?
Was he going faster than the inside lane?

Messycoo · 15/06/2025 21:15

Oh this really works my ticket middle lane hoggers !! Even though is breaking the Highway Code !! Some people and my OH included are just sh&T drivers . I have to really button it and just let them drive.
I do feel once you have passed your driving test everyone should take a compulsory test to show you are fit for driving on the motorway!

I know that in theory the police could pull you over for lane hogging but has anyone ever seen or heard of this happening?
