Watching Trooping of the Colour - AIBU to feel proud or is it an anachronistic, expensive waste of money?

Been watching Trooping of the Colour. I just love the bands, the precision of the marching, the horses - all of it TBH. We do it better than anyone else IMO. Also good for tourism as many tourists come to the UK for the pageantry, palaces etc.

AIBU to feel proud?

Or is it an anachronistic, expensive waste of money?

Feel proud if you want to - that's your right. I think too much money is spent on royal pomp and ceremony personally.

MasterBeth · 14/06/2025 12:54

I don't get it.

What are you proud of? What have you done to feel any kind of personal pride because the country you were born in can put on a military pageant?

Most countries put on military pageants.

mutinyonthetwix · 14/06/2025 12:55

I'm on the fence but, worst case, it's essentially harmless and costs basically nothing in the grand scheme of government spending.

MiloMinderbinder925 · 14/06/2025 12:55

We've got millions using food banks, people with disabilities terrified of poverty, a third of children in poverty, working poor, pot holes, crumbling services, utilities through the roof, COL crisis, housing crisis, debt crisis, care crisis and we need this to cheer us up.

The Eurofighters & Red Arrows are in the air - currently approaching Colchester.

The same way you might feel proud of an accomplishment a parent of theirs had achieved. You had no part in it, but pride to be their child or part of their family nonetheless.

People say they don't get. I'm not sure I believe them but I worry they might be telling the truth.

Yes, because there is nothing more cheery that watching some toffs riding through tourist London in the face of such gross inequality.

Thank you for suggesting I am lying.

When I say I don't get it, I mean I don't get it.

It's not as impressive as North Korea leader's birthday celebrations but it's still pretty good.

This. Bread and circuses. And men in very shiny boots and bearskins doing formation marching.

Davros · 14/06/2025 13:06

Its an anachronistic show for the plebs.

If I want to see bands, precision and horses I'd rather go to a concert, the ballet, a horse show or whatever, where there's performers with actual talent rather than a random privileged family

That is precisely why the money spent on this, could be spent elsewhere, for something more important, imo. It does nothing to make me feel cheerful.

Spot on. Troop as many colours as you like if that royal lot are paying for it. Do not waste tax payers money on this nonsense when the country is in the state it’s in please. If one penny of tax payers money is going on this shit show for the plebs when there are food banks in this country I despair I really do.

Charming. Do you really want to kill the royal family?

Do you work at a food bank

Dangermoo · 14/06/2025 13:19

"Plebs" - one of the catch all words, to look down on others, while advocating for equality.

Well, in fairness, the royals chiefly figure in Trooping the Colour as slightly gormless onlookers in hats, while the somewhat niche skills like precision marching, playing music on horseback while controlling a giant drum horse with foot-reins etc is done by commoners.

MyDelma · 14/06/2025 13:21

This is like a Jeremy Vine phone-in.

"Do you want to kill the royal family? Do you work at a food bank? Have you ever had your car windscreen struck by lightning? Call us on 0800 ..."

TheTecknician · 14/06/2025 13:23

I like the horses.

soupyspoon · 14/06/2025 13:23

I missed it, I also missed the pope thing, I like a big do, lots of ceremony and ritual and large crowds, people moving around, outfits. Its like a big time extravaganza show, very much enjoy it.
