Avocado, for example, delicious when ripe and served cold or at room temperature, but disgusting if heated.
What are your pet hates, temperature-wise?

I can’t stand hot coffee but love iced coffee.

looselegs · 13/06/2025 13:32

Pizza
Quiche
Hot,not cold

Yes for avocado, of course, but tinned tuna is really nice hot with eg a tuna melt panini, or tuna pasta. Tuna with hot melty cheese is great. But agree not with hot avocado.

I ordered a roasted vegetable panini in a cafe, was expecting peppers etc. It was mainly carrot which felt quite wrong.
Despite the fact that carrot is fine served hot, or roasted...but imo didn't belong in a panini

IMO cold pasta, e.g in a salad, is a gross travesty. Pasta should be hot, with a sauce. Though I could just about forgive anyone eating (say) a chunk of leftover lasagne at room temperature, but then it’s sandwiched between sauces anyway.

Cold pasta has less carbs so I’m all for it cold.

Jane958 · 13/06/2025 13:59

What about potatoes? I love hot potatoes in any form, but they have to be freshly cooked.
I find potatoes that have gone cold and been reheated pretty rank. I quite like potato salad, but only if made with the "correct" kind of potatoes and either homemade mayonnaise or a stock-based dressing (typical in southern Germany).

Don't fancy warm cucumber

I recently reheated some curry with tabbouleh - much to the horror of my colleagues - and the cucumber was surprisingly fine.

Gazpacho, vichyssoise, lovely refreshing cold soups, properly chilled, not just left out to go cold.

Yes, Gazpacho is so much nicer than hot tomato soup.

Agree with avocado, and would add that tinned tuna should not be served hot. Avocado and tuna panini are an abomination.

I hate hot tuna too.

DrCoconut · 13/06/2025 14:46

I prefer canned drinks at room temperature to freezing cold.

mumda · 13/06/2025 14:52

Baked avocado .. I used to do a dish with that .. what on earth was it. It's probably from the Cranks book.

Yes i do.too, I don't like ice in drinks either.

Also salad with lasagne - which seems to be popular on here!

I will only eat salad with lasagne — I don’t get the chips or garlic bread accompaniment I see people on here regard as normal. For me you need a contrast with something cold and crunchy with a sharp vinaigrette.

But I wouldn’t use a hot plate if there’s salad. My mother has a terrible habit of putting plates to warm in an oven so hot that when food is then put on the plates, it starts sizzling and hissing, and anyone accidentally touching the plate is likely to get a nasty burn.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 13/06/2025 15:00

Agree with avocado, cucumber, baked beans and lamb.
Disagree with pizza (better hot but ok cold), pasta (I like pasta salad), tuna (I like a tuna pasta bake, even though it's a bit studenty!). Also totally fine with salad accompanying hot food. I'd eat salad with lasagne because I like it, not because I think it would make the meal healthier!

pizza must be hot - cold pizza is disgusting!
congealed cheese where the fat is all separated and sitting in a slimy layer on top - when it’s hot it’s all gooey and delicious and flavoursome, when it’s cold it’s nasty 🤮

See, I think pizza is best lukewarm when the cheese has hardened a bit. I always wait ten mins after getting my pizza to start eating it so it’s reached perfection. I agree it is rank cold though.

BangersAndGnash · 13/06/2025 15:04

Pasta ‘salad’ at BBQs is the worst thing about summer.

It’s always horrible . Claggy, nothing with any flavour. Worst of all mayonnaise on pasta…

The only remotely acceptable pasta salad is an M&S one drenched in olive oil and good pesto, with spinach and pine nuts.

A mile away from my BIL’s cold pasta with a tiny amount of chopped pepper and salad cream. Ugh.

Chips and sausage rolls should be hot.

Sausage rolls can be room temperature but never fridge cold.

Agree about avocado, but I love a tuna melt. I did have to perform a mental leap to get into it though, but now it's one of my favourites.

I agree! I cannot understand why some people like cold pizza.

Cold left-over pizza is the breakfast of champions. It has to have anchovies on it though.

Oh I agree that pasta salad is often rubbish, but it doesn't have to be. I'm fine with mayonnaise in it if it's a good pasta salad with plenty of flavour and good ingredients. Also it shouldn't be served fridge-cold imo.

Grapes must be fridge cold.

Chocolate must be room temperature.

Other way round for me!

I love cold left-over roast potatoes! I don't reheat them though. I also love potato salad and am not fussy about what kind of potato (I couldn't 'be arsed with pretending to know the differences), and I prefer it with yoghurt to mayo.

Your BIL should be in jail for that.

I love pasta salads of all kinds but the best is pasta, salami, tomato, cheddar, red & yellow pepper chunks, olives, and an oil based Italian dressing (basically olive oil, garlic, and seasonings).

Or I recently rediscovered macaroni salad. Noodles, lots of red and yellow peppers, onion, and a mustard mayo dressing. Mmmmmm

I had a colleague who used to put grated parmesan on food and then heat in the communal microwave in the open plan office. The stench was indescribable.

just wow

I like cold any kind of potato. Cold new potatoes dipped in salt... mmmm
