Shower door cleaning

Hello, does anyone know how to clean shower doors so that they look clear? I have tried different cleaning sprays but to no avail, they still look streaky and have deposits on them after cleaning. I have recently tried 0000 steel wool, but it only came up marginally clearer, I tried it in conjunction with Viakal vinegar spray too. I'm beginning to think it's just that I don't have enough scrubbing power in my wrists.

we replaced ours with a shower curtain.
a lot less faff as it just can go in the washer

Don't use fabric softener on your cloths/towels that you use to clean it, they'll always leave it streaky

HeddaGarbled · 12/06/2025 19:37

Method shower spray. It’s the only one that works. Keep it in the shower and use it after every single shower. Just spray and leave: no rinsing, scrubbing, wiping.

About once a month my H does it with the Karcher but I’m not convinced it’s any better.

For anyone concerned about the steel wool it is possible to use 0000 on glass without scratching although I wouldn't personally.

It's not clear if you have streaks from cleaning product residue or calcium deposits from hard water. I use CIF lime scale remover because whilst it's slightly less powerful than viakal it does rinse more easily and doesn't leave residue. A window vac is the best option for drying the glass without streaks.

Here's a few alternative ideas.

The best thing I have found is a magic sponge. Gets them squeaky clean. And only using water too.

I'm going to try this. We're in a very hard water area and cleaning the shower is the bane of my life.

ThejoyofNC · 12/06/2025 19:48

Mine are always crystal clear and I've never changed the way I do them. I'm also a gypsy so cleaning is basically in my blood 😆

First wash them with a bucket of hot soapy water. Dunk your cloth in, wring it out and clean. I use bleach and fairy liquid but I know everyone on here is very anti-bleach.

Then with a separate dry cloth, spray with glass cleaner and wipe over.

If you don't wash them first then you're just pushing the dirt around. I also don't think steel wool on glass is a very good idea, it's very abrasive and likely to scratch it.

A cleaner once told me that she used toilet duck for cleaning shower screens

RealEagle · 12/06/2025 19:50

karcher window vac

Shower head filter? Replace the filters rather than clean

HouseOfGoldandBones · 12/06/2025 19:54

Spray bottle with white vinegar, teaspoon each of washing up liquid & bicarb.
Spray & leave for 5 minutes.

Do you rinse it off afterwards or take a dry cloth to polish it?

BethBynnag86 · 12/06/2025 20:19

I use a Fairy glass sponge with a load of Fairy Liquid and really foam up the glass using a circular motion, rinse the lot off then squeegee it all down.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/06/2025 20:25

I use a dishmatic filled with washing up liquid, white vinegar and warm water, then squeegee it off. We squeegee it down every time we’ve finished in the shower, too.

Ooh I've been dying to share this 😂
Two microfiber cloths, run one under the hot tap until it's dripping wet and hot, squeeze a really generous squeeze of washing up liquid onto it, don't wring the water out, squidge it so it's soapy but dripping wet.
Then rub it over the glass, keep rubbing until it feels clean, the glass should be good and soapy.
Then dry it with the other dry cloth, don't rinse the suds off, go straight to drying.
I sometimes use one of those really useless "hand" towels to dry the glass.
Let me know if it works for you

Basically I do this 👆 Two cloths, I use a microfiber one to wash and a glass /window polishing cloth as my drying one. Works a treat!

skippy67 · 12/06/2025 20:32

Karcher.

OffToLockUp · 12/06/2025 20:35

HG Glass and Mirror cleaner.

And brilliant on chrome too, making super shiny taps, shower head etc.

And dry/polish with microfibre cloth.

Snugglemonkey · 12/06/2025 20:45

Wow, I just rinse all the glass every shower and once a week spray with glass cleaner, wipe off with a microfiber cloth. It is always clear.

yourefreetodowhatyouwanttodo · 12/06/2025 20:46

Viakal

BitterTits · 12/06/2025 20:48

I used to use Blitz paper towels to rub any streaks away, but life is too short.

Bamboozles · 12/06/2025 20:50

HG limescale remover and then shower shine after EVERY shower

deeahgwitch · 12/06/2025 20:52

That tip re a magic sponge sounds good.
DH scratched his car - red paint on a black car- and he got a magic sponge at it. Perfect now.

EggandStress · 12/06/2025 20:56

Do these tips work if your doors are plastic, not glass?
