To be raging at shortbread instead of pastries?

I am at a conference type event. As a teacher I rarely get to come on this type of thing. I've looked forward to the pastries on arrival throughout the two hour drive. I'm here and there are no pastries. It's biscuits of a shortbread type, which I don't like anyway and are not appropriate as a substitute for pastries. I haven't eaten so it's going to be a long morning until lunch, which I now have concerns about anyway.

Why is everything so relentlessly fucking shit now?

Was there a particular reason you assumed there would be pastries? Or any food at all for that matter? I can’t say it’s something I’ve ever expected….

SoScarletItWas · 12/06/2025 09:42

Well that breaks all the conference breakfast item rules!

Fingers crossed for pastries at the coffee break…

MiddleAgedDread · 12/06/2025 09:42

I’d demand a refund

I’d demand a refund

I’d storm the stage

That’s not how work conferences work. Work pays not you.

pinotnow · 12/06/2025 09:44

Luckily I haven't paid and am actually being paid, otherwise storming the stage would definitely be on the cards.

I'm sure pastries on arrival were mentioned in the bumph and we definitely had them last year.

That's deeply wrong OP! I'm also a teacher and there absolutely should be tiny pastries at the start of a conference. Biscuits at the tea break.

Pinkyplat · 12/06/2025 09:45

Shortbread is not a breakfast item. (Also, shortbread is shit.)

I'm so terribly sorry for you at this difficult time. ❤️

MumbleBumbleAppleCrumble · 12/06/2025 09:46

Were pastries promised or did you just assume that a full patisserie breakfast would be waiting on arrival?

Conference food is usually somewhere between indifferent and shite. On occasion it’s surprisingly good. The pastries though? Never. Small, tasteless and hard.

It’s like breakfasts at a chain hotel. We use them regularly to sleep in when travelling but always skip the breakfast and find a nice independent place in the town we’re in.

DifferentChild · 12/06/2025 09:47

With you on that @pinotnow shortbread is a shit substitute for a good cinnamon whirl or chocolate croissant. Hope your day gets better😃

PermanentTemporary · 12/06/2025 09:48

God. Now that wfh is more of an option, people who expect us to leave the house need to up their game. Definitely with you.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 12/06/2025 09:48

Are there any legal experts here? Can you sue for deformation of contract or something? I would be seriously pissed off.
Lobby to have the next meeting in Denmark. You'll get pastries for breakfast, I promise.
Shortbread??? Wtf.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/06/2025 09:49

I’m going on a study day in a couple of weeks. I’ll be very disappointed if there are not pastries. I’m gutted that I’ve already had to turn down the free hotel room and dinner the night before as I’m working!

MumbleBumbleAppleCrumble · 12/06/2025 09:49

Also, all those people saying that shortbread is shit. It’s like those people who say sex is a bit dull: you’re either crazy or you’re not doing it right. Good shortbread is the stuff of dreams. Soft, sweet, crumbly. My grandmother used to make the absolute best.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/06/2025 09:49

I completely feel your pain OP!

Toddlerteaplease · 12/06/2025 09:50

@MumbleBumbleAppleCrumble yes but it doesn’t come close to a pastry with flakey pastry and custard in it.

MousePolice · 12/06/2025 09:52

I travelled 2.5 hrs to a conference once and they served apples with the coffee. Apples and coffee on arrival, more apples and coffee at 11.30. At 2 they served a tiny sandwich lunch and it closed at 4.30. My stomach was rumbling throughout!

Neither are pastries. Considering how carb avoidant MN is and obssessed with 'protein and veg’, I’m surprised about the enthusiasm for ‘pastries’ aka sweet air on here.

Seems like a good way to eat a lot of calories that make you starving hungry an hour later rather than provide any actual sustenance to me.

Wouldn't you have breakfast before you arrived anyway?

StellaAndCrow · 12/06/2025 09:52

There should be bacon sandwiches! I have ONCE been to an event that had bacon sandwiches (and other non-meat options) available on arrival - all event since have been a disappointment!

BarnacleBeasley · 12/06/2025 09:53

I can't believe all the people saying that YABU. Clearly there ought to be mini pastries. Biscuits in coffee breaks only. I hope you are going to update and tell us what is for lunch.

I think of it as the Disappointing Missionary of the biscuit world.

I love shortbread …….

Oh, a good pastry, in the morning? Absolute dream. Love a decent pastry. Almond croissant, Pain Swiss, something custardy and fruity. Yump.
Conference and hotel pastries though? Generally out of a freezer pack, small, slightly stale, tasteless and hard. They are the anti-pastry.

I would quite like that. I always bring my own apples to a conference. But there have to be pastries and biscuits as well.
