I went back to work after being mostly a SAHM for the last decade, and honestly, it’s not the job it’s any job that I hate. I was far happier and healthier living off a bean. More and more people I know are claiming benefits so they can reduce working or not work at all. If I genuinely really suffered from anxiety or depression I would too.

I know a few people on the sick so they don't have to work, the thought of work scares them.

Paganpentacle · 11/06/2025 15:17

Tough.
Fortunately you weren't required to climb chimneys, work down the pit during your childhood years, or go to war.
Nobody wants to work but unless you're planning on being a leech off society for the rest of your life you better buckle up.

sunnywithtsunamis · 11/06/2025 16:38

Can you do it? Or just wishful thinking?

I see this everyday in the village I live in. Women doing very little, not working, big house, cleaners, gardeners, planning holidays etc. often much older husband who brings in all the money.
Im A bit jealous when I can’t breathe, trying to fit in work, chikdren, clubs, eating, cooking etc, I’m sure it was never meant to be this way

Which village is that? Sounds like there's something in the water ....

TiredMummma · 11/06/2025 17:26

Can you drop your hours? Many of my colleagues work 3 or 4 days and are so much happier. Time to do stuff they actually want to. I am struggling. I have a good well paid job but I’m bored. I don’t want to go for a better job that’s interesting as I know it would put me under pressure my health can’t handle. I dream of the day some just gives me £1m and I could just spend a little on projects and live off the interest.

So what do you intend to live on?

Perpetuallyannoyed · 11/06/2025 17:43

ilovesooty · 10/06/2025 14:51

No. I mean unless people are born into wealth and inherit money, the general expectation is that you go to work and earn money to live. Bleating about not liking "any work" in your 30s seems to me to be the mark of a lazy person.

It doesn’t mean someone is lazy at all. I’ve never loved working, I do it because I have to. If I got the chance to not work, I would take it!! When I was furloughed during Covid, I had the best time. I trained for a half marathon, walked every day, took up a lot of hobbies that I didn’t have time to do usually! Not exactly lazy…..

greencartbluecart · 11/06/2025 17:51

It’s not lazy to say that you don’t like work

its a fact of life for most people - it isn’t something they like just something they know they have to do to pay the bills

letting people acknowledge this is probably very good for everyone

Elzibub · 11/06/2025 17:53

Same - been working since 17 and I’m 51 now. …….

ThatHonestPeer · 11/06/2025 18:13

I am 45 and quit my payroll job 2 months ago 🫣 it was very hectic and stressful. I thought f**k it life is too short. My other half is working and our mortgage is paid off and my eldest daughter is working too. I am now doing school runs for disabled children and get £400 a month and I have another house on for rent. I am now somewhat content and my life realistically hasn’t changed apart from my bank balance and I am less stressed and my health is so much better too, I am extremely happy as I get to have my lie ins in the morning & enjoy my Netflix but on very rare occasions in the daytimes I miss work and sad it may seem I miss doing payruns 😅but that’s on very rare occasions.

I feel like this the majority of the time that I have no life and it’s relentless! Ugh I’m 38!

CoralTiger · 11/06/2025 18:31

Totally understand how you feel. I'm 55 and counting down the months until I hit that retirement age. The best advice I can give is to find something you may enjoy and then going to work is that bit easier. For me it was doing exam invigilation, of all things. Try volunteering in the community in your spare time as that could lead to something else. Good luck!

fetchacloth · 11/06/2025 18:33

YANBU but imagine how you'll feel in your late 50s with potentially another 10 years to go.

1DinosaurAnd3Giraffes · 11/06/2025 18:33

Same.
30s. Well paid job. Im good at my job. So good in fact im essentially paid for what i know and not what I do now days really.
But I dont want to learn anything new in my company now because my brain is maxed out and I dont have the same keen interest I once had. Dont care about progression and moving up either because life's too short for that sort of responsibility for a measly pay rise.
I can't retire.. have a mortgage to pay.
So here ill sit, doing the bare minimum while they stupidly keep paying me until I'm forced in another direction.
Maybe i can sell feet pics? That's got to be fun right?

I’m with you. 43 and beyond frustrated. There are no decent jobs, certainly not with good development opportunities right now. Wages aren’t going up but bills and essentials are. And people are frustrating! When you spend all day with people you have zero in common with, it’s exhausting. I’m bored, unchallenged, frustrated and miserable with my job but there’s just nothing out there to move on to.

My Nan retired in 2003 at the age of 60. She had ten years enjoying life with my grandad, free from the mundane routine, before he passed away. By that I should have 17 years left. Instead I genuinely have no idea how many years I’ve got but I’m guessing between 25-30 at this rate. I’m so over it.

I think Ur post is so politically incorrect...but literally everyone gets it and feels the same.
I clicked not unreasonable expecting to be in the minority...hahah not so!
It's refreshing to hear we all go through the same stuff.
Strength to Ur arm.
Just work out how much u actually need and do a part time job .. best of both worlds?
Plus working a bit is actually good for mental health I think. Keeps routine.
Anyway all the best.

Greenartywitch · 11/06/2025 18:41

''@MerlinsBeard1

Office work is soul destroying, humans are not supposed to be glued to screens for 8hrs a day, sitting under strip lights like a bunch of battery hens, dealing with bullshit pointless meetings and arsehole management. Of course some people have careers they enjoy which is a different story, but most people I know hate Monday morning and would quit in a heartbeat if they could.''

Exactly!

I don't mind work in itself, but I have an issue with office politics, pointless meetings, bitchy/backstabbing colleagues and employers who expect me to do the work of an entire team by myself...

Add to that the dreaded commute and the fact that with the cost of living crisis having a job no longer guarantees a decent lifestyle and no wonder people end up being miserable at work.

I think the OP is putting into words what many of us think, deep down.

It has nothing to do with laziness or a lack of work ethics but rather acknowledging that they are many toxic workplaces and that long hours stuck at a desk is not ideal for our physical and mental health.

I’m lucky, I love my work. That’s really sad 😞 find something you love. Open university, career change!

steeringwheelishotandwarm · 11/06/2025 18:56

Sames here! Pig sick of working hard for nothing really to show. No holiday for the last 5 years, eating out scaled back, we’re driving older cars so any money left over has to to be outside for things breaking in the house or car repairs. Last month our boiler went, my car needed new tyres and we had a lump sum of money that was needed to fund my son’s P7 residential. Constantly skint, constantly working. I’m fed up

Trendyname · 11/06/2025 19:01

Are you ok Op? You sound hopeless and depressed. You also seemed to be disappointed in a new job, which happens some times. I had once left a job because of office politics but the next one was even worse when I was hoping things would be better.

Are you in that kind of situation? Can you retrain? I disagree with people - it’s not always because of work ethics or laziness. Some people lack resilience due to circumstances or other reasons to deal with crap a lot of corporate jobs come with.
