To think that drinking alcohol free beer at 10am is a bit odd?

Maybe I'm behind the times, but...

If you were on a first date and arranged to meet for a coffee in a cafe/restaurant at 10am, would you find it a bit strange for your date to order alcohol free beer?

I would a little bit. Even though there’s no alcohol, it’s very early to be smelling like beer 🤢

HRTQueen · 08/06/2025 21:15

Yes

I would likely think he is trying to deal with not having an alcoholic beer

MidnightPatrol · 08/06/2025 21:15

I mean… technically it’s just a soft drink, but I agree it seems strange.

Definitely a curious choice for a first date.

Flamingoknees · 08/06/2025 21:15

They might fancy a treat, and not like coffee etc. I would raise an eyebrow at a real beer.

wordywitch · 08/06/2025 21:16

Yes, I would find that odd and would be wondering if they have an alcohol problem or have only recently got sober. It could be perfectly innocent and they just really fancied one but I’d definitely have been surprised and questioned them about it.

Hmmm, that makes sense in terms of a comment that he made today via text that was something like "I haven't had alcohol for 2 weeks, not that I've had a problem"...

I think context is all here. I would have an an alcohol free beer at lunchtime, because I like drinks with more interesting flavours that aren't sugary.

But I hardly ever drink non alc beer. So I don't associate it with proper drinking, if you get me.

Gundogday · 08/06/2025 21:26

Yes, I would think that was odd as well, and wonder if they had a problem.

Someone who genuinely didn’t have a problem wouldn’t even mention it.

Very true.

I think if we met at lunchtime it wouldn't feel so odd. It's the fact that it was 10am.

feelingbleh · 08/06/2025 21:48

No but I often drink in the morning so I'd be sat their with an actual beer

Octavia64 · 08/06/2025 21:48

I don’t drink any more due to meds and haven’t for ten years.

i’d have one with a meal - so at lunchtime - and possibly also on a sunny afternoon.
not at 10am.

sunshineandshowers40 · 08/06/2025 21:58

I don't drink and would find this odd.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/06/2025 22:00

10am yes strange

plus his text comment

he is a drinker

honestly

run and avoid

Ikeameatballs · 08/06/2025 22:00

I drink alcohol and like non-alcoholic beer. I would think it an odd choice at that time.

GreensFuckOff · 08/06/2025 22:26

Thanks all. Think I’ll steer clear of this one.

helpfulperson · 09/06/2025 08:20

I think on its own it isn't necessarily a concern but with his other comments then yes, I think you are right to go no further with this man..

I really don't like coke etc and AFB is my soft drink of choice. For a long time I only drank it at times and occasions when a beer would be appropriate but more now I have it when someone else might have a diet coke. So I might have one at 10am,

GreensFuckOff · 09/06/2025 10:32

I hate the taste of beer, hence it seeming odd to me to choose it at 10am. Interesting that lots of people would choose it as a soft drink option though, I’d never really considered that.

OP posts:
GreensFuckOff · 09/06/2025 10:33

Anyway regardless of that, I don’t think this guy is the one for me.

If he had come straight from a nightshift at work then that would be more acceptable as a post work relax drink - I'm assuming this wasn't the case though!

I mean yeah I worked nights for years and sometimes has a drink in the morning after work as it was my evening ,but I wouldn't have a non alcoholic beer or wine
I would either have an actual beer or wine or a soft drink.

Ladamesansmerci · 09/06/2025 11:14

It's weird. I don't enjoy hot drinks and would definitely order a pepsi or something at 10am, but a non-alcoholic beer would never cross my mind. I though people only drank these if you don't want alcohol for whatever reason and it's somewhere with alcohol involved e.g a pregnant woman at a pub, someone on strong medication at Christmas. Surely no one is having them for the taste.

Why wouldnt someone drink it for the taste? I know we arent all the same but to me it tastes better than a coke.

MN has some very strange ideas from people. I don't really drink, never had any addiction, but I don't like alcohol much at all. Non-alcoholic ciders taste pretty nice and are quite tasty as an alternative to things like coke, lemonade etc. Some of us do enjoy the taste and I like to have them more in the warmer months with dinner. One has berries and cherry flavour and is very nice imo. It isn't drunk just by people on strong meds or pregnant women. I have to wonder at the thoughts in some people's minds and who goes about musing on why someone would drink non-alcoholic drinks. Very odd.
