To be scared that my AirPods just swore at me

mismomary · 07/06/2025 22:50

In bed right now reading mn on iPad. AirPods were in purely out of habit but silent as I'm on Mumsnet. DH asleep. DCs in bed. Then... mid reading a mn post my AirPods told me to F Off. First of all quietly with a stutter, then louder, repeating F Off about three times before I took them off. Was a robotic female voice.

Freaked out! Has this happened to anyone else?

That’s so strange! I would be freaked out too

StaySpicy · 07/06/2025 22:51

Are they connected to your iPad? Maybe an advert playing in the background?

Needmorelego · 07/06/2025 22:53

Were they trying to say "power off" 😂

PoppingZits · 07/06/2025 22:56

Erm, did you have a glass of wine or something? 😂

mismomary · 07/06/2025 22:57

No they are wireless Apple AirPods, had them for years, often listen to podcasts to go to sleep.

Honestly couldn't believe what I was hearing. Feel like I'm in Black mirror. Darent put them back in.

Noooo! Not plastered I promise! And it was definitely F Off. Not a human voice though, computerised voice.

Is this the beginning of some kind of AI takeover 😀😮

StaySpicy · 07/06/2025 23:02

But they are connected to something? So was there an ad playing or FB video or something?

mismomary · 07/06/2025 23:04

Is there a way someone could connect to my AirPods and type in text for them to say? I do have four teen boys in the house...

OP posts:
mismomary · 07/06/2025 23:06

They were connected to my iPad, and ok I did have about thirty apps open. But just well known apps, Tripadvisor, Duolingo, shopping, games, that sort of nonsense. Closed them all down now.

Not familiar with airpods but as a wireless device they must be connecting to another signal. I found this... might be relevant?

Could you have nodded off for a second and dreamt it? A microsleep possibly?

mismomary · 07/06/2025 23:10

Thanks Sparky but I don't think I'm connected with another device. DH doesn't have Apple gear and others too far away from me. We live in the middle of nowhere.

lachance · 07/06/2025 23:11

I thought this once but it was saying something about a mode being off. I can’t remember which mode it was but it sounded like fuck off.

mismomary · 07/06/2025 23:11

Nope definitely not dreamt it. I was literally just reading Mumsnet posts about ten minutes ago and it happened. Actually scared to put them back in.

Mine scare me when they say "power off" but never heard of them saying random words. That's v creepy OP.

😂😂

Hang on.... request just came in from my DS phone to have more time on the website naturalreaders.com... obviously denied. Still no idea how this happened but suspect teen boys.

Power off! Heeee!

I don’t use AirPods so no idea. But my iPhone has a few times in the past decade or so done strange things sometimes. Internet searches warrant nothing. Then a couple of years later I will read about it happening to someone else. So you never know. 🤷‍♀️

I can’t remember the exact. But as an example something like me saying to DP I am tired. And then I get a phone notification from my phone saying ‘go to bed then’. Like what the fuck!!!

Yeah, you can connect to Apple AirPods from non-Apple devices. E.g. I can connect them to my Dell laptop. I think your DS is messing with your head! 😂

mismomary · 07/06/2025 23:36

Yep, I no longer think AI take over or Black Mirror. I think the boys were probably somehow sending each other delightful messages and one came my way. Charming. Sigh. But no longer freaked out. AirPods back in. Thank you mn for talking me down.

Power off! Heeee!

Yeah....poor things are probably tired and wanted to go to sleepy 😴😂

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 07/06/2025 23:46

AirPods don’t say power off. Only the cheap knock offs do that.

Onlyharmony · 08/06/2025 00:18

Do you have instagram?

It could have been a reel.

Mine has played audio of reels before when I've had the app closed. I had to force close it to stop. It's probably something like that.
