Just totted up how much money I’ve spent on clothes since September- a bit shocked.

I used to keep note of my clothes spending from the start of the school year and fell out of the habit, Just did a tally and have spent just over 2k. I’m a bit shocked but probably shouldn’t be. I shop in a mixture of Jigsaw, Whistles, Marks etc. How does that compare to your spending? Children have now left home so have more disposable income so no debt.

It would probably take me 10 years to spend that much!
Did you need those clothes? If so, fair enough. Better to buy good quality clothes that last. But if you already have lots and are just buying those because you like them, well done for keeping the economy going but maybe it's a bit of a burden on the environment?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 07/06/2025 11:53

Since September? Probably not more than £200 🤷🏻‍♀️

Forthemarket · 07/06/2025 11:57

Since September … for myself £116. A pair of trainers and some yoga pants and some material. I am about to spend a few hundred in new walking boots. I did nab my son’s old jeans and haven’t needed and new work clothes. My family as a whole have probably spent similar individual amounts - we tend to replace when things wear out and get new things as presents sometimes or if we see something we fancy but are keener on not shopping than shopping.

IKnowAristotle · 07/06/2025 12:01

About the same but for a family of four, not just me.

Secularbeaver · 07/06/2025 12:02

So you have 2k to spend on clothes?
Do you wear what you bought?
Do you enjoy it?
If yes to all of them I don't really see the issue 🤷🏼‍♀️

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/06/2025 12:03

I think about £500 but have started a new job and put on weight.

KimsInconvenience · 07/06/2025 12:03

Since September? I think I've bought....
4 t shirts online, about 30 quid each
1 top from a beach boutique in Thailand, about 12 quid
2 red tops for a Chinese new year event I went to (meant to take one back!) -total 50ish
A puffer jacket from M&S that was reduced to 25 quid
So about 220 quid total. I don't feel like I've short changed myself or not got anything I needed. So yes, am quite shocked at 2 grand!

I make a decent wage but am saving for hour renovations, so needless purchases get swerved. If you can afford it though, make use of the clothes, and donate or resell when you're done, then its your choice! Maybe try vinted or something for a while instead if you want to spend less or have less of a environmental impact?

screwyou · 07/06/2025 12:04

Very little, maybe £100. I wear uniform for work and then lounge wear at home. I have a staple wardrobe that i mix and match. If you have the money though and enjoy spending it on clothes then good for you I'd say.

bluebunnyjacket · 07/06/2025 12:07

About £1000 now I think of it. Disgusting really but I started a new office based job and worked from home previously so some was justified. That probably includes some bits for the kids.

Waitingfordoggo · 07/06/2025 12:07

I have bought a pair of sliders, a sports bra and two gym vests. About £70? This is pretty typical clothes spending for me. I spend probably £100-£200 on clothes in an average year.

Notellinganyone · 07/06/2025 12:09

I’ve put on a bit of weight and decided it’s pointless waiting and not looking decent in interim. I’m a teacher so have to be reasonably smart for work. I don’t have lots of clothes and got to the stage where a lot of my outfits had been worn to death and looked tatty. This did include a leather jacket and two pairs of winter boots. I’ve given up on Vinted and EBay.

Rainytoday · 07/06/2025 12:09

I’ve bought a pair of boots, a pair of sandals, two pairs of trousers, a shirt, skirt, two t-shirts, a summer top and a jacket. Roughly £500.

I have already decided that I am not buying anything else for the summer and will manage with what I already have.

I do love shoes and coats but I will see what I need in the autumn.

sunshinechaser · 07/06/2025 12:11

10 months? I’ve probably spent £5k as I spend around £500 a month on clothes. Yes I could probably spend this money more wisely but I can afford it and clothes bring me lots of joy.

Notellinganyone · 07/06/2025 12:12

I’m adjusting to having more money as mortgage is paid off but DH and I both still work full time. Still paying DS’s uni rent costs but he’s the third and final and only has one year left to go. I can absolutely afford it but it did surprise me when I added it all up. I suspect I’ll spend far less next year.

I’ve spent about £1500+ since Sept but I have had to have a wardrobe refresh as I lost 5 stone so I’m having to buy a whole new wardrobe essentially. I enjoy buying clothes now though so I count it as part of hobby spending in a way!

BakewellGin1 · 07/06/2025 12:14

Off the top of my head I've bought running trainers, a pair of jeans, a new set of gym clothes and a hoodie. Approx 400 max

BananaSpanner · 07/06/2025 12:15

I’ve lost some weight so needed to buy some new bits. 2-3 pairs of jeans from new look and Sainsbury’s
some basic tee shirts and knitwear from m and s
A couple of shirts and summer dresses with a Boden discount code
a couple of work skirts and shoes from Next.

Probably £500 max.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 07/06/2025 12:15

I've probably spent about £150.

Poopeepoopee · 07/06/2025 12:16

Aww you could have spent it on a lot worse things than clothes. Drugs, gambling, alcohol, junk food.

Enjoy wearing them!

Doggymummar · 07/06/2025 12:20

I've spent thousands, but I'm a reseller on VINTED and eBay, so unfair comparison. I just did my tax return and was quite surprised by the amount. Luckily I work to a 3x margin minimum so I'm winning !!

dudsville · 07/06/2025 12:22

I don't know because thankfully my brain doesn't hold on to numbers, but this is something I have to keep on top of and I do an annual check (I review all of my spending annually, but clothes is the area I have to keep on top of).

Clothes for me aren't about need. It's a pleasure, and I particularly like a certain era of a specific brand and solely wear that, so I have lately started buying more from vinted at least. I don't shop around outside of this niche interest though. I've curtailed my shopping to specific brands for specific items across the whole of my wardrobe. That said, I did make a random purchase this year as a result of having to walk a long way to home after work one day - it was a very warm day and I was wearing sandals that weren't good for the walk. I now own some trainers that I can wear to work. I have one wardrobe and one chest of drawers, and the limitations of that space actually helps me.

MrsArcher23 · 07/06/2025 12:23

I never add things like that up- who needs that negativity in their life 😅 In truth, I haven’t bought too much this year thanks to an expensive older teenage son but I look forward to getting him off the books (eventually!)

PeapodMcgee · 07/06/2025 12:24

Nothing, I got clothes.

Holluschickie · 07/06/2025 12:26

About £200.

IfNot · 07/06/2025 12:26

Exciting to finally be able to splash out! hope you enjoy wearing what you bought and it makes you feel good. I hate all my clothes suddenly and have spent 0 for about 3 years ( except bras) so I envy you!
