Just totted up how much money I’ve spent on clothes since September- a bit shocked.

I used to keep note of my clothes spending from the start of the school year and fell out of the habit, Just did a tally and have spent just over 2k. I’m a bit shocked but probably shouldn’t be. I shop in a mixture of Jigsaw, Whistles, Marks etc. How does that compare to your spending? Children have now left home so have more disposable income so no debt.

£25 on some new jeans

TheKeatingFive · 07/06/2025 12:30

I've easily spent twice that since September. But I can afford it and am adjusting to different expectations at work, so I don't see the issue.

If you want to get more of a handle on it, why not set yourself a budget per month?

NamechangeJunebaby · 07/06/2025 12:32

Enjoy it if you have it! I’ve bought three dresses from Boden for work - all in sale so less than 90 in total, a pair of work boots in sale for 27 and a pack of undies and a woolly combo from primark also in sale for 20. I’m considering some summer shoes.

I used to fritter money like it was water but nowadays I don’t buy anything unless it’s reduced by at least 40%. Ive nabbed some proper bargains. Currently am eyeing up two more Boden dresses for autumn but don’t have the 80 they cost in the sale.

I buy from mainly Boden for work as I still have dresses from there that I bought ten years ago and am still wearing them so I trust the quality. Nothing worse than a new dress that goes bobbly after a few washes!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 07/06/2025 12:33

About £150. Actually thinking about it I bought some new wellies too so more like 220. I haven't changed size and I haven't really needed anything. Did get some lovely short pj's though.

LottieMary · 07/06/2025 12:35

Maybe 500? Went back to work after mat leave and bought some dresses. jeans off Vinted. Pair of trainers and sandals. Couple of new bras. That includes some birthday gift cards as well.

BIossomtoes · 07/06/2025 12:37

I could easily spend that amount in nine months. It’s about £220 a month which doesn’t seem ridiculous to me if you’ve got the money.

countingthedays945 · 07/06/2025 12:40

Since Sept I’ve bought one jumper - Whistles, pair of sandals- Next, t shirt- M&S, t shirt - another site, pack of knickers M&S, skirt - Oliver bonas for a cruise.

probably around £350

betsy99 · 07/06/2025 12:42

In the past year I have bought a couple of tops/knitwear and new skirt to update my work clothes. I have a customer facing role so I do feel the need to look smart and replace anything that starts to look tatty but none of its designer and was bought in the sales. That said, I bought an expensive branded graphic t-shirt for the summer but I get a lot of joy from wearing those types of tees. Probably about 250 quid.

Proudestmumofone1 · 07/06/2025 12:44

@Notellinganyone oh god I’m not brave enough to do this. At least £5k. Probably far more. God how awful 🙈

actually this means I probably should be as brave as you and fave the music!!!! Eeek

tammienorrie · 07/06/2025 12:44

Less than £100 for sure. But I do not shop as a hobby and most of my stuff is second hand.

£2k seems outrageous to me, especially if it was just general shopping and not "I need a wedding guest outfit" or "I need salopettes and a ski jacket" shopping. We all buy far too many clothes.

Notellinganyone · 07/06/2025 12:46

It’s because I fell for some very beautiful green suede wedge sandals on Toast this morning. They were £295 but I love a wedge sandal and my black pair are now really old. It just made me wonder how much I’d spent. I ordered them!

240 sezane bobby jacket
2 cashmere blend waistcoats 68x2
White company trousers 62
Sezane cardigan 100

EveryDayisFriday · 07/06/2025 12:48

Quite a lot, I've gone from size 18-20 to 12-14 so have bought a whole new wardrobe of cheap fast fashion. I've bought some good quality coats and jackets and sold on my bigger ones.

Createausername1970 · 07/06/2025 12:48

If you can afford it then it doesn't really matter.

I had a clear-out after Xmas and donated a lot of hardly-worn clothes to a charity bag. I have been an inconsistent shopper in the past, I buy something without considering what I will wear it with, plus I lost weight then put it back on and lost it again, so I had various things that were either too big or loo small or which seemed a bargain at the time but in reality I wouldn't wear them. So off they went.

Since then I have bought about half a dozen tops that I like and am wearing regularly, some new jeans to compliment the tops and two pairs of trainers (one smart/casual, one cheaper to walk the dog in).

So about £175 approx since December.

Notellinganyone · 07/06/2025 12:49

@tammienorrie - I don’t actually have many clothes. One chest of drawers and half a small wardrobe and I don’t think I’m a mindless shopper either. I tend to wear things for years and a lot of my summer dresses are around 8 years old. The poster who pointed out it’s about 200 per month made me realise it’s not crazy. I don’t really have hobbies apart from reading (buy lots of books) so not concerned by the amount of money.

I'm not going to tot mine up as I needed new winter boots (replacing a 3 year old pair), two pairs of running shoes ( trail and road), two much needed sports bras cost £80 alone ( important to me to have good support), a winter coat (replacing 5 year old one). I've also bought quite a bit of summer clothes as going on a different snd hotter type of holiday to our usual camping.
All this could easily be £2k or more but i'm unlikely to need anything else for the foreseeable, perhaps a pair of work shoes/ trainers come the autumn.

I agree. I've spent nothing in the last year.
I'm going to a wedding later this month as a guest and I'm wearing clothes I already have.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 07/06/2025 12:53

Probably £1000. Bought a dress £150 and some items in Marks £150 so that’s £300 I can easily think of plus there must be others

AllTheEnergy · 07/06/2025 12:54

It’s only a couple of hundred per month on average. You have the money and needed the clothes so 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I don’t keep track over the year but in the last month I have have bought a few new pairs of summer shoes, 6 dresses, a few pairs of shorts and some new gym wear, which was around £1300. It soon adds up.

AdoraBell · 07/06/2025 12:56

I’ve only spent about £200.

blueshoes · 07/06/2025 12:57

I’ve given up on Vinted and EBay.

OP, why is this?

Astrabees · 07/06/2025 12:58

I’m retired and allocate the 13th monthly payment for the base of my clothes fund, which is just over £1k this year. I sell off things I no longer wear, so £600 from that this year and then spend maybe £100 a month on things I want. So, about £2.8k this full year. This is down a bit from when I was working.

I’ve put on a bit of weight and decided it’s pointless waiting and not looking decent in interim. I’m a teacher so have to be reasonably smart for work. I don’t have lots of clothes and got to the stage where a lot of my outfits had been worn to death and looked tatty. This did include a leather jacket and two pairs of winter boots. I’ve given up on Vinted and EBay.

Why not? It's your money and you can afford it. Some of those pieces will last for years.
Better to buy quality than cheap tat that ends up in landfill.

Weepixie · 07/06/2025 13:00

Not much at all as I’ve lost a lot of weight which meant I could wear clothes I had that had become to small, or never fitted in the first place.

But come August I’ll be buying everything I need or want and I’m really looking forward to it.

Good for you OP. I’ve just spent a small fortune on Aspiga and very happy. I’ve had some proper disasters on Vinted- straight in the charity bin!
