Just totted up how much money I’ve spent on clothes since September- a bit shocked.

I used to keep note of my clothes spending from the start of the school year and fell out of the habit, Just did a tally and have spent just over 2k. I’m a bit shocked but probably shouldn’t be. I shop in a mixture of Jigsaw, Whistles, Marks etc. How does that compare to your spending? Children have now left home so have more disposable income so no debt.

Clothes are much more expensive than they used to be and poorer quality.
If you don't want to live in cheap synthetic stuff from primark and the supermarket then you can barely buy a cotton t-shirt for 35-40 pounds. Decent quality shoes are also very expensive now.

I can well imagine if you've bought any work wear the numbers can stack up quickly. I bought 2 dresses, a jacket and some shoes recently and it was about 400!! And yes I'm aware I could have bought a £20 dress in primark but not everyone wants to wear clothes made by poorly paid workers in the 3rd world.

Profpudding · 07/06/2025 13:01

In a normal year I could at least spend £2000 each season season being summer and winter
I don’t worry too much about spring and autumn

@tammienorrie - I don’t actually have many clothes. One chest of drawers and half a small wardrobe and I don’t think I’m a mindless shopper either. I tend to wear things for years and a lot of my summer dresses are around 8 years old. The poster who pointed out it’s about 200 per month made me realise it’s not crazy. I don’t really have hobbies apart from reading (buy lots of books) so not concerned by the amount of money.

Edited

No, it's far from crazy, and you're obviously a mindful shopper. I spend a lot on clothes, but I go for quality and they last me years.

This ⬆️. Mindful shopping.

Middlechild3 · 07/06/2025 13:03

For those brands I don't think it's a lot, I spent £80 on a Whistles top last week. A lot for me but the quality is great and it's classic so I'll get a good spend to wear ratio. If you are spending that much EVERY few months I'd think it was impulse buying with little thought or planning. Only you know............

Tartantotty · 07/06/2025 13:03

Two grand. You must be minted!

TippledPink · 07/06/2025 13:04

I did a big clothes shop for my birthday in March and spent about £500, that's probably it since September.

Mumof2wifeof1crazytimes · 07/06/2025 13:04

I don’t keep a record but I probably spend around £200 per month. Tend to shop at mint velvet, m&s and JL so don’t get loads but but I prefer the quality.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 07/06/2025 13:11

I've probably spend quite a bit on clothes. Maybe £150/£200 a month and that's with buying and selling on vinted. I'm a teacher too so I buy a mixture of smart and casual. A pair of trainers these days can be close to £100. Buy a few pairs of shoes a year plus a new coat, bag, accessories, summer holiday clothes, underwear, jeans, jumpers etc it all adds up. Some people will be horrified, other people will happily spend hundreds on more high end wear. I do have a bit of an addiction though. I know it's terrible for the environment . That's why I'm trying to sell and buy on vinted much more and for my kids clothes too.

Gettingbysomehow · 07/06/2025 13:12

Me too. I lost 5 stone and went a bit mad. I regret nothing.

lifeonmars100 · 07/06/2025 13:14

Got a lovely classic coat in the post Christmas sale for £40
A couple of pairs of jeans from M and S about £55
A pair of cotton trousers again from M and S when it got hot in May and were an utter bargain at £25 as they fit well and wash well
A pair of cream low heeled sandals that will go with everything £66
A summer dress from Unfolded that is taking ages to arrive £55
Can't be bothered to add it all up but that is my spending on clothes for the past 10 months. I used to love buying clothes but I am fat and old so it does not bring me the joy it used to!

Scottishskifun · 07/06/2025 13:14

I've spent £350 - that included ski gear though

Butchyrestingface · 07/06/2025 13:15

I don't see a problem then. If buying clothes makes you happy, and you don't feel the expenditure is making you miss out on other things you would rather (or need) to be doing, what's the issue?

Doesn't really matter what anyone else does or wants - they're in a different situation. It's your money and you can't take it with you when you go. Smile

LemograssLollipop · 07/06/2025 13:15

This thread makes me think I should keep a tally. I buy as I need/want but wouldn't say it's excessive. But without knowing the facts of what I've actually bought I don't know if that's true.

LetMeAtom · 07/06/2025 13:20

Surely it depends on what you need, I can go months and months without spending on clothes then suddenly need to spend a bomb

Marmiteontoastgirlie · 07/06/2025 13:22

Make a budget and decide your discretionary spending level and then spend that money on what you want, guilt free! 2000 since September is around 200 a month which is equivalent to two nice tops or one pair nice jeans a month - I wouldn’t feel guilty about this as long as you have the money.

KitsyWitsy · 07/06/2025 13:24

I spent about 2k on clothes just last month! Got some holidays coming up and lost weight though.

Missey85 · 07/06/2025 13:27

Jesus how do you manage that you can't need all that junk? I last went shopping two years ago I've got more important things to spend on

Discombobble · 07/06/2025 13:27

I’m afraid I buy my clothes in charity shops or off eBay - I have recently splashed out on some new M&S knickers though

Felloffthehedonictreadmill · 07/06/2025 13:28

£124 on Vinted.
£400 online shops including shoes.

Colchique · 07/06/2025 13:31

Estimate about 350, 90% via eBay (mainly new or barely worn).

ViciousCurrentBun · 07/06/2025 13:34

Trainers £40 in a sale
A second hand dress and hat to alter for Fancydress £20
Dress, jumper and top in a closing down sale at House of Fraser £100.

Flamingo68 · 07/06/2025 13:34

Probably about £500 but the bulk of that was Taylor Swift cardigans 🫢
