I can’t sleep and feel really terrified. My idiot neighbour this evening told me there are huge snakes where we live (in uk). I didn’t believe him and he showed me pictures on his phone. We live near a lake and I’ve been here for 2 years but not seen one. I’m terrified and can’t sleep, I know I sound crazy but please help me. I kept checking under my bed and I keep checking in on my kids. I’m a single parent and have no one in my life to help me out of this fear, I’m so afraid to sleep.

I live in Spain , in an area that has snakes. They are incredibly shy. 14 years here and Ive seen 2 live ones, both times when building work disturbed where they were resting.
Kindly you need to get a grip.

@MeTooOverHere @NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin

The OP discloses she has a fear of snakes coming into her home and harming her children, which is verging on hysteria, and you think that now is a good time to bring up an invasive species and some urban myth about a snake sizing a child up to eat him? Why would you do that?

That. And pet non-native snakes are completely irrelevant to OP's situation.. why on earth would you both deliberately post something to increase her anxiety?

Sugargliderwombat · 07/06/2025 08:04

Hi op have you thought about maybe talking to someone who really really knows about snakes? You might find it reassuring. Is there a wildlife charity near you who could reassure you if you called them?

babystarsandmoon · 07/06/2025 08:10

My daughter saw some on the school field and her teacher confirmed they have seen them too as it can get quite wet and boggy.

You’ll be safe at home.

sugarapplelane · 07/06/2025 08:18

Sorry Op, but I really feel you need some help controlling your fears and anxieties. Someone to help you see that they are illogical.
You post sounds like you are hysterical over a perceived threat, but even one you’ve actually come across and it’s going to make you ill if you don’t do something about it.
You live in the UK where wildlife is very very tame compared to Somewhere like Australia or Africa.
Good luck with moving forward with your anxieties.

Horses7 · 07/06/2025 08:19

Adders are small snakes and will not come into your house. Your neighbour is obviously getting laughs/satisfaction out of scaring you, a single Mum. The UK has no big snakes.

PruthePrune · 07/06/2025 08:20

Move to Australia, you will feel much safer there.

i just want to move back to my old house. I hate this wildlife

There’s wildlife in cities - did you never come across any there?

Sharptonguedwoman · 07/06/2025 08:25

Newbie5542 · 06/06/2025 23:35

Is there some kind of deterrent I can put outside the house to stop them coming in? I hate living here! I’m sorry for people who love wildlife but I’m scared of most things here! I thought having ants coming into the house was bad. I’ve put ant bait stations out and haven’t seen them for a while now I have something else to bloody be scared of.

Almost no UK wildlife will hurt or harm you. What is it exactly you are scared of? We lived next to a place where there were adders, never saw one. Snakes are shy and very small.

Greyhound98 · 07/06/2025 08:26

Honestly to try and rationalise your irrational fear of snakes that you will likely never encounter; you are much more likely to die from dementia, heart disease or cancer than you will from any interaction with a snake.
There’s no snakes coming in your house.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 07/06/2025 08:27

Totally could be a snake around as there was one yesterday by our local school. No seen one before. It was all over social media - I guess we could live in the same place as it’s in the countryside. If so it wasn’t massive.
but you need to get some help. Thinking that a snake will get into your kids rooms and strange them is crazy. These snakes and tiny, will be scared of humans and are not constrictors

Given he said grass snakes and showed you an adder he doesn't sound very reliable. They aren't very big and will do their best to avoid you.
They bask on paths sometimes but can sense the vibration of walking feet and will generally disappear into bushes.
Grass snakes quite like a pond as they'll eat frogs. Adders are more likely to be on heaths.

I'd love to see a grass snake in my garden.

Good post
I live near a farmers field so see them every now and then, always on very hot days
They are really small and harmless

More predators in cities, lots of foxes and rats, birds of prey and, most dangerous of all, many more humans!

Could it be just the picture it looked big then? But he did say he couldn’t believe how large they are.

He did say they’re not poisonous

They can grow to around 80cm. You’ll never see one I’m sure. He’s probably been camping out to catch sight of one.

Notsuchafattynow · 07/06/2025 08:33

I lived 2 meters from water for 20 years and never ever saw a snake on the path, in my garden and certainly in my house.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 07/06/2025 08:34

You've more chance of winning the lottery! If you've not seen.one for 2 years likely you won't in next two either.

Comtesse · 07/06/2025 08:34

1- I wouldn’t believe anything I see on Facebook.
2 - I am 50 and never even seen a snake in the UK. The chances of one coming in your house seem very very low.

RareMaker · 07/06/2025 08:37

I don't like snakes. I live rural. Seen a few out and about but honestly you have to look quite hard. They will not want to come near your house.

I was swimming in a river once. Saw a grass snake swimming and nearly cried but it was swimming across without any interest in me and I accept I was privileged to even see it, still don't like them though!

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 07/06/2025 08:38

A snake will 100% not come into your house. They are shy and stay away from humans. Your house will stink of human (to a snake) and they will give it a wide berth. If you made it your mission to find a snake and spent all your time looking for them in places they are likely to be you still would be very very lucky to see one.

I think snakes are rather beautiful but even if shit myself if I saw one swimming next to me, like you I would feel privileged though.

MeganM3 · 07/06/2025 08:40

Never seen one in the UK. And I’m quite outdoorsy.
Probably the best place to be in the world if you don’t like snakes.

Or NZ, no native predators at all and snake free!

Panda89 · 07/06/2025 08:46

I’ve grown up fishing with my dad and now we go as a family, so we spend a lot of our free time at lakes, canals and rivers. I’ve only seen 1 snake in my 35 years, and that was actually swimming in a lake.
They are very rare and shy in this country and really won’t come anywhere near you.

Myblueclematis · 07/06/2025 08:51

I live fairly near a lot of MOD land and right on the coast. Every year there are FB pictures of the adders there, a lady got bitten badly last year but apart from a couple of dogs who also got bitten, they are not really a massive threat as most sensible people would keep themselves and their dogs away from the area when it's particularly hot.

No one to my knowledge has ever had a snake come into their house and terrorise the household locally, I'm pretty sure it would be all over FB if that ever happened.
