If Andrew Tate was asked to leave a restaurant because staff felt uncomfortable serving him, would people vote YABU?

cardibach · 06/06/2025 18:46

lnks · 06/06/2025 17:30

Just to add, freedom of speech is one of the most crucial parts of a democracy. If you really believe in these principles, you have to accept that you will hear views that you find offensive.

Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from all consequences.

What's your point?

UndermyShoeJoe · 06/06/2025 18:46

So they refused him service.

Maybe people stating because his considered a violent criminal… which is not a protected thing.

How does that work if say someone with a protected characteristic was also a violent criminal. Can they still refuse service or would it then be illegal because of characteristics despite both being criminals.

Say a wheelchair user who is a criminal, a religious criminal, a Romany person who’s a criminal. A pregnant women with a conviction. Do they get to stay because protected or also kicked out.

I do think it’s best to remain professional and remove if the person starts trouble. Fine line.

12doublerolls · 06/06/2025 18:47

Shame on that restaurant. You don’t throw people out for sitting eating a meal just because you don’t like them. I’ve never believed that Tommy is a racist, he’s just a man bringing to light what the mainstream media won’t, and they just keep throwing him in jail to silence him. If being concerned about the state of the country you grew up in and shining light on the grooming gangs that the media won’t show makes you a racist then we’re in big trouble.

cardibach · 06/06/2025 18:47

Ponoka7 · 06/06/2025 17:32

But do we live on a country were that happens? I despise SYL but, it could have easily have been JK Rowling based on how trans people are treated globally.
If what he has said is within the law, then he shouldn't be denied service.

Crucially, it wasn’t. Hence the jail sentence.

Is it legal to refuse service because you don't like someone's political views?

There used to be a far right group that had their HQ near where I lived in the 1980s.

At least two of the local pubs wouldn't serve any of them, and they never challenged the landlord's right to refuse service.

Lilactimes · 06/06/2025 18:50

cardibach · 06/06/2025 18:46

Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from all consequences.

Or the fact that a private business doesn’t want you in their premises.

Shakeoffyourchains · 06/06/2025 18:52

Tbf I'd also refuse to serve of people I knew had been convicted of fraud, harassment, violence, stalking, contempt of court, possession with intent to supply and who described a convicted paedophile as a "top bloke" who had been "stitched up" just cause they were white and part of a their racist, hate filled group

cardibach · 06/06/2025 18:53

Womblingmerrily · 06/06/2025 17:48

If we're talking non professional can the Mcdonalds staff decide they don't like the look of me today and refuse to serve me?

I know technically pubs can refuse service to anyone, as can any private business (so yes, public servants have different criteria) but how would you feel if someone refused you entry/to serve you because you 'didn't fit their clientelle' or similar?

Used to be really common - some pubs and clubs didn’t allow denim or trainers. We coped.

Tomeees £150 billion Brexit put paid to that - they'll take whoever they can and look after them.

There's millions out of work.

You do realise that he was in jail for contempt of court which could have actually allowed men who abused girls to go free?
Whether you believe he is a racist or not he has been in jail for potentially collapsing a trial not "shining a light" on anything.

Unless he's abused the staff or something then yeah.

Staff should do their fucking jobs. If the owner wants to bar someone then that's up to him or her.

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 06/06/2025 18:59

Completely wrong a very slippery slope to refuse to serve someone because of their political views. Doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree with him

Political views are not a protected belief.
Belief, insofar as it is covered by theAct, doesn't mean "what I think".

I think olives are shit. I believe they are. 100%.

That's not a protected belief.

It's true. They are gross. I just couldnt take someone to court for denying to serve me based on my belief in the disgusting taste of olives.

Believing (thinking) something is not in itself a protected characteristic.

The Equality Act says that a belief must be worthy of respect in a democratic society and not affect other people’s fundamental rights.

I'm delighted he was kicked out of one of the best steak restaurants in London. They have several branches so hope it's a blanket ban.

No decent restaurant or establishment should knowingly serve him. If word got out their reputation among the majority who are normal non-racists would be damaged.

I would rather stab myself in the eye with a spork and eat instant ramen forever than sit near that scumbag while I eat my very expensive dinner.

Maybe he should eat in a greasy spoon cafeteria in wherever they have a majority Reform government?

Do you know the beliefs of everyone you sit near in a restaurant?

Dangermoo · 06/06/2025 19:01

I think the management handled the situation well. Particularly impressed with one of the dining party, who isn't white, asking if it was because of his skin colour. Good for him.
